They'd be a championship contender. And even if they're not claiming a playoff berth themselves, they'll do some damage. A third-place, 8-2 WIAC team could be, say, the fifth best team in the country — and not make the playoffs because some paper tigers out east went 9-1. Good teams are gonna land punches and beat each other up. That's the problem with an uber-powerful WIAC, at least in terms of football.

Agreed. This is what I meant about unintended consequences of bringing St. T in.
The WIAC needs another team or two, but not necessarily a Stagg Bowl contender.

As for ranking, I'd look past the 2018 results of St. T and UWO and give them both the benefit of the doubt that their programs are national championship caliber. As such, I'd go UWW 1A, St. T 1B and UWO 1C.

From a players perspective, I'd love to see them in. As athletes, we always want to win. But you also want to play the best. I remember playing both St. Norbert and Drake while I was at Oshkosh. Drake was just transitioning to non-scholarship D1. We beat St. Norbert every time, but lost two games to Drake. I enjoyed going to Drake and playing in a big stadium. I understand that when the Big 10 added Nebraska and Penn State, they did so for TV revenue and to improve the scope of the conference. But it didn't hurt that they added 2 of the most visible programs to the conference. The WIAC is the best conference in D3. Why not make it better? STU makes all our sports more competitive. For a long time, we've often been a 1-bid league in football. This doesn't change things.

I dunno. Improving the conference makes sense if you're a D1 basketball league, not WIAC football.

Speaking of St. Norbert (which is moving from Midwest Conference to NACC), I wonder if any inquiries were made to WIAC before they made the switch.

The thought of St Norbert inquiring about joining the WIAC gave me a good laugh.

I think St. Norbert likes being a bigger fish in a smaller pond. That said, given SNC's position that reduced travel was the primary driver in their decision to leave the MWC, it makes sense that they at least inquired. And WIAC Commish Gary Karner's comments below about St. Thomas would suggest he'd be very open to full membership from the likes of St. Norbert. It makes sense that at the very least, they checked out each other's tinder profile and perhaps met for a glass of chardonnay.

"Some people have been under the impression – erroneously so – that we would not consider someone who is not a UW system school," said Karner. That has never been our policy."

"I think that (enrollment) is overplayed at the Division III level," he said. "It's not like our coaches are walking around campus looking for kids to play baseball. Everybody is going out and recruiting kids to play in their athletic programs. It's not like we're combing the hallways and because we have 2,000 kids and you have 1,000 that gives us a bigger population to cull from."

"We're all Division III. We all follow the same rules. We're all philosophically in the same place when it comes to athletics. So what difference does it make, public or private?"

I know, right? The WIAC schools took their puck and left because they were afraid of competing with SNC, so why invite them for everything else?  ;D ;D ;D  ;) ;) ;)

If UW-W doesn't bother with it, it's not a sport.

How'd spring ball look, bleed? Y'all see a QB start to emerge or will that not get settled till August when the freshmen/transfers arrive?

I think it's fair to say it will be settled in Fall Camp. There is going to be a lot of talent in that room this year!

I don't think anybody in the WIAC with apparent exceptions of Point (Herro) and Stout (Borgderich) heads into the fall with an incumbent QB. Maybe UWO does, I dunno. Kasper was a tough act to follow for Radavich, who (in his defense) didn't have a Mentkowski to throw to. UWW has such a deep group of pass catchers that they'll make whoever wins that QB job better.
