Lance Leipold is among a group of names being mention for the Vanderbilt HC job now that the school has fired Derek Mason.

Rather see him at Iowa State after Matt Campbell bolts for the NFL. He could win there. Vandy's historically disadvantaged. Three winning seasons in SEC play since World War II. Don't know what's wrong there, but whatever it is will be epically difficult to fix.

Only private school in a conference of public schools. They don't place anywhere near the same value on athletics as the other SEC members. Academically they are a massive SEC outlier and, unlike the rest of the SEC, their alumni base is not primarily local, less inclined to pin all their hopes and dreams on football every year, and far more able to accept that having a winning football team doesn't make their degree any more valuable. So the blind devotion to sports success, at any cost, that permeates the rest of the SEC is far more muted at Vanderbilt. They have several extremely successful athletic teams, baseball comes to mind, but to do so in football on a regular basis is simply not worth the extra cost. They make tons of money just being in the SEC, good or not at football, and they don't need to bend admissions standards and spend a fortune on dozens of coaches and quality control specialists, ridiculous facilities, and a massive stadium that won't be filled. All pre-requisites to even being competitive in the SEC. Being decent isn't going to change their bottom line, reputation, or alumni devotion very much, so why bother? Win in the sports where you can compete, do as much damage control as possible in the sports you can't.

I'm not for or against a LL move to Vanderbilt and I don't have much knowledge in the area of private schools and football. Could Vanderbilt be appealing from the perspective of building a Stanford, Notre Dame or Northwestern type of success? Nashville is a pretty cool place.

The good news is any coach who has a few good seasons at Vanderbilt is going to be under heavy consideration for a bigger job. See the current Penn State coach. However, that's a blue moon situation. A good enough coach could certainly replicate Northwestern. Notre Dame has a history and desire for football among the alumni and University bigwigs that Vanderbilt won't match. Stanford... well, the PAC 12 isn't the SEC or Big 10.

I think Matt Campbell might be in line for a gig at Michigan (or Texas) before the NFL. And yes, if I was LL, I'd way rather end up at ISU than Vandy, for all the reasons jknezek already listed. But also because coaches have had moderate success at ISU, and there's a fanbase hungry to have consistent success like their in state rival. And Campbell has laid the foundation at ISU, it wouldn't be a rebuild. LL could certainly keep building on that (I also love the angle of a coach with UWW connections continuing on the work of a coach with Mount connections).

Mr. Ypsi

Agree.  And Michigan will (hopefully) need a new coach for next season.  Despite three straight terrible hires, they are still the winningest school in the NCAA, and The Big House has sold out every game for 40+ consecutive years - so quite a plum position.

I still can't figure what went wrong with Harbaugh.  After what he did with Stanford, I was thrilled when Michigan hired him - what a disaster it has turned out to be! :o

Leipold has U of Buffalo ranked for the first time in school history; #24 in the poll out today...discuss.

What do Buffalo and Clemson have in common? Besides both being ranked?

Are they the 24th best football team in America?  Would they beat 25th Wisconsin?  I really don't know but what I know is that they've worked really hard and deserve every bit of credit they get. Good luck Bulls.  I'd love to see them schedule Wisconsin though.

I have no clue what they have in common.

Really happy for LL. He sure gave Mount Union fits. That got my respect and now he and his team are getting much deserved respect around the country.
Go Buffalo and Go LL! Oh, what the hell, Go Warhawks too! 🏈  ;D

Congrats to LL, it's been fun to watch his success. It's also partly why I have a weird soft spot for Brian Kelly at ND. I love to loathe the Irish as much as next B1G fan, but his small college roots/success always leaves me wanting to see him make his mark.

If I was Iowa State and Matt Campbell got lured away, LL would be my first and last call.

It'd be a pretty great fit for LL as well. A program that already has a new foundation set. An area of the country he knows how to recruit. A program he could still put his stamp on.

Ney ney....I want Leipold in Champaign, to lead the Illini.  Gonna have some competition there, Cyclones.   ;D

Fantastic to see, super happy for LL.
