The Third Division

It will now have been over 10 years since Whitewater's last stagg bowl.

Here's to hoping they get a bowl game now. If they even miss that, then Jace Rindahl has some serious soul searching to do.

Some thoughts on Platteville's 17-10 win over WW. A 10-7 WW lead going into the 4th quarter WW was putting together a  nice drive and their offensive line seemed to be controlling the line of scrimmage. WW had a 1st and goal and Platteville's defense held.I still wonder why WW didn't kick a FG. 2 plays later Platteville scores on a 90 plus yard TD pass. That seemed to take the wind out of WW's sails. When WW had to pass to get back in the game Platteville's defensive line put pressure on Chryst forcing him to rush his throws. Platteville started WIAC play with LaX, RF, Oshkosh and WW I was hoping they could win 2 of those games. I'm very happy to be at 3&1.

Whitewater's run of success makes me appreciate even more what Mount Union has been able to accomplish with their extended consistency over the years...

That said, I can't see Whitewater being "down" for long with the tradition they've built. The question is, how long until W.I.W.A?

Not sure if you're confusing UWW w some other team. UWW last played in the Stagg Bowl in 2019, where the offense was terrible and the team was crushed by NCC. Prior to 2019, UWW last played in the Stagg in 2014.

Yep, sorry -- I was looking at semifinal appearances.

Regardless, it's been 5 years since their last Stagg Bowl.

Another wild day in the WIAC. I just am struggling to see how the WIAC gets three teams into the playoffs. UWL saved their season with a win over UWRF yesterday and now has some life. UWP puts themself in the driver seat to win the league. Is Whitewater vs UWRF a playoff game this weekend? Winner still has a chance and loser out?

Only the thing hawks have for them is the outside chance of making the Isthmus bowl. 3 losses with probably more on the way seems likely.

I will be difficult to get three teams in. Platteville, Oshkosh and Stout are tied for first at 3-1. Platteville has Stevens Point, Eau Claire and Stout left unless something bad happens to them they should be in the Top 2 in the WIAC. Oshkosh has Eau Claire, Stout and River Falls left. Stout has LaCrosse, Oshkosh and River Falls left. To me it looks like 2 of those 3 will make it.  If LaCrosse wins out you could argue that they deserve a spot because one of their 3 loses came against a very good D2 team.

USee

Any D2 results don't count in the NPI calculation so LaCrosse is 3-2 for NPI calculation purposes. In the scenario where LaCrosse wins out they would be considered a 2 loss team and if their NPI is 64+ they would likely be in.

I saw someone posted on X that there is also an unlikely but possible scenario where only Platteville gets in. Would require the following results:

Whitewater to beat River Falls & Lacrosse
Lacrosse or Platteville to beat Stout
Oshkosh to lose to River Falls & Stout

That would leave all of those teams with at least three D3 losses and make it unlikely they are chosen in Pool C. Logan Hansen has a 3 loss team at less than a 20% chance of making it.

Imo, as good as the WIAC is from a parity perspective, I don't see any of the teams as championship level. If UWP and UWO win out, I believe UWO wins the conference and UWP would be in great position for pool C.

It would be a stunning development if the first year of the 40 team playoff the WIAC had no Pool C rep in the field.

I think it's very unlikely, but the scenario PAlum posted doesn't require any kind of crazy upsets. It's not like it asks for UWSP to pull one out of a hat. That said, I have no read on who the 2 WIAC teams will be at this point. The top half of the league is very even.

USee

The two likely teams at this point, based on current NPI rankings are UWP and UWO. Those two probably also have the easiest path in terms of schedule (which isn't very easy).
