Oshkosh does offer a free shuttle service to and from campus for football games. Buses run every 20 minutes beginning an hour and a half before kickoff.
The students turn out for big games. The Whitewater game was well-attended. Even the La Crosse game, despite it not meaning anything for Oshkosh, had a nice hometown crowd by Oshkosh standards.
But you're right. Students are apathetic toward athletics at Oshkosh. Even the good men's basketball teams, which play less than a 10-minute walk from any dorm, draw high-end crowds of around 1,000 in a 5,500-seat venue. A campus of over 11,000 students can do better than that.
Football has a lot working against it. Not the least of which is the team has never contended for anything.

The Whitewater crowd was a good one but that was a night game and there were a lot of UWW people. No alcohol in the parking lot doesn't help.....why can't they lift that like Whitewater for the games?.....

I'm not sure that lifting the drinking ban at Oshkosh or any other place for that matter would draw students.  I think if you have students that are 18-22 years of age, only 40% are of legal age anyway.  I'm also quite aware that there are students that partake of adult beverages that are underage but I don't really think lifting the ban will really bring people in, especially students.

And where is this parking lot people are talking about in Oshkosh anyway?  I have always had to park in the street or over by the bank whenever I have attended?  And the bleachers where about half full.
I may not have much to say, but I'll say it anyway.

What makes the Oshkosh college attendence even more of a joke is seeing about 5,300 (my estimate -- a TV station reported 6,000) fans for a regular-season high school basketball game at Kolf Sports Center last week.
Hard to compare HS to college, but to see how Kolf can be with it full is quite a sight. Same thing goes for the HS sectional games at Kolf. What is usually a one-fifth full, quiet gym is transformed into a carnival for high school events.
Too bad most Oshkosh college students don't show up for free games when all they have to do is walk across the street to Kolf to see basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, track and volleyball or ride a free bus to the football stadium.
But I'm sure it's the same story at many other schools.

I think part of the thing that happens at a state school is that you have a larger student body.  I think students are more likely to go if they have a more personal connection.  If they know a player or a friend knows a player or they have a player in class.

With a smaller student body you get a large number of those types of connections so you get a larger percentage of the student body.  In a larger student body you have a lot more unconnected students.

Just a theory.

Certain high schools will always outdraw the best of DIII. For instance in 2005 Massillon (OH) Washington High School's average home football attendance for its 7 games was in excess of 9000 while that of Mt. Union (right down the road from Massillon) was 3785 for its 9 games.

If I would have said "best," you'd have a point. Tell me how 17 championships in 16 years does not qualify as "one of the best" and I'll take it back.
Nice little subtle, meaningless dig about my background, too. Classy.
Then again, I'm not the guy who calls himself the "Mount Union" of the message board. I'll cede to your greatness.

Wise move.

I wonder if this K Mack dude has any predictions on the Oshkosh coaching position.

He could also take some humble pie pills.

Well,
I'd have much preferred to let the above be the last word on it, but I see that some of you don't read the message board in the same tone I do. A wise man once said "take everything you read on a message board with a grain of salt."

With that in mind, when people make blanket statements, particularly about someone's standing in D3, I like to press them for details as to what makes them qualified to say so and what reasons they have to believe that. It's a legitimate pursuit that helps me -- and I'd like to think other board-readers -- distinguish the homerism from the things we should all be taking notice of. If your boy really is one of the best, that would be something that we at D3Sports should be keeping in mind (and some of the other guys may have already known).

OshDude, I don't know you from Adam, and it's pretty clear you and your boy titan2000 don't know me beyond the last couple of posts either. I have no reason to dig at your newspaper past, that came directly from this quote of yours:

Quote from: OshDude on January 23, 2007, 07:42:18 PMPersonally, I think you have something against me and what I write, going back to my days writing for a newspaper.

That's your hangup, holmes, not mine. I may work somewhere big now, but I very much remember where I came from. I've worked at a small twice-weekly, and I wrote for this site on the side before it had a fancy new message board for guys like yourself to post on. If you have readers, then what you write/wrote is important to them.

I like details like 17 in 16 years. That's all. You're not going to goad me into some knockdown, drag-out message board battle. My bad if my other post came off condescending, but that's kind of how people roll on the message boards. Let's keep it lighthearted and save the PMS for another time, 'kay? Thaaaaanks.

He is one of the best there is in D3.

Please tell me your newspaper work means you've done extensive research, as you sound awfully sure about this.

K-Fed,
I have no idea if you were responding to me or what you meant with half of your post. You are too funny.
But apology accepted.

K-Mack

Fair enough.

Although if you ever call me K-Fed again, I will have to have you shot.

Mr. Mack,
You drive a hard bargain, but it's a deal. I would prefer not to be shot. That's a total deal-breaker for me.
I think a lot of things get lost in translation on message boards. No ill will intended on my end. Just wanted to see it through, and it ended in its logical conclusion.
And Titan2k is not my boy, though I'm glad he had my back...at least until you flashed a piece on the lanes. The dude abides.

I'll jump in on that prediction thing.  A guy already on your staff has the job for the year.
regarding K-Mack taking humble pills:No need at all.  This guy is the best at what he does.  Trust me on this one.  Now Titan2000, get back on that basketball board where you belong and get after that deer hunting buddy of yours.  The board is boring without you.

With all of the hating that goes on these boards, I think everyone needs to get a dose of this Dave Chappelle clip.

Just thought everyone would be interested to see that Oshkosh, much like Stout, named their defensive coordinator as interim head coach.
