The rumor mill is buzzing. RF has a job listing for assistant football coach (suposedly). You can all guess who is suposed to be the shoe in candidate. Heard it won't officially be filled till March 1. (warning, this could all be BS, but I don't think it is)
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Rumor update. The following job IS posted at RF.

Assistant Football Coach/Lecturer
Athletics/Coaching (Posted 02/02/07)

Also, the posting lists O coordinator, and recruiting duties. Sounds like it was taylor made.

Would Stan be interested in a DI OC position and/or would they be interested in him? Let's say, for instance, the Northern Illinois OC position should open up soon.....

Interesting story about in-state recruits and the success of the Warhawks....I would love to see Verona's C.J. Miller in a Warhawk uniform....I saw him play this year and he is quite the explosive little RB

UW-Whitewater's back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III title game the past two seasons along with the WIAC's tradition of excellence are making it easier for in-state players to stay home.

While NCAA Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships, Waunakee coach Pat Rice said the WIAC is becoming a better option for in-state players who might have accepted offers from Division II schools or out-of-state private schools in the past.

"The kids see their facilities and are impressed," Rice said of the WIAC schools. "The players are also thinking that they can be the next Ryan Kleppe or next Derek Stanley."

The NCAA had a highlight tape at the Stagg Bowl luncheon of Mount Union and Whitewater 2006 season that was simply awesome. I am told that is being shown to all recruits......that with a look at the facilities can make a great impact on recruits. Player of the year in Wisconsin, defensive player of the year for D3, offensive lineman of the year Hansen Gazette.....obviously UWW players are getting some publicity and who from Wisconsin ever hears of D2 players. This makes Whitewater and other WIAC schools an easy pick.....

Ouch! What a kick in the gut to have the Waunakee coach quoted in an article about Whitewater's recruiting!  Waunakee has (or had) been Stevens Point's pipeline for years.  Scott Krause, Tony Romano.  The times they are a-changin'.

How do you think MUC does it every year.   ;)  Everybody want to play for a National Championship!  I imagine recruiting has gotten a little easier at Whitewater the last few seasons.   ;D

There was an article in today's La Crosse Tribune about Stout's drug testing, too.  With a sidebar about testing policy at UWL.

Barber Greene - I think the more logical question is the latter one, would NIU be interested in what is basically a career DIII assistant coach to take over as a DI OC from a guy (John Bond) with 7 years as a DI OC & some 24 years total experience in the DIAA or DI ranks.  Looking at your man Stan's bio, he spent the last 17 years in one job, at one school (that begs to answer why???).  Plus, he's in his mid 50's I would guess.  Bond is only 44 years old.  If you built a stereotypical OC at the DI level, they are young, they have experience at the level they are coaching/recruiting, and they have worked in many different positions at many different schools - staying a few years each stop before moving on to greener pastures.  Of course, there are some exceptions to the norm, but for the most part that's reality.  I think it would be a very difficult sell for a DI program to take a risk (I call it that because I think it would be) on a candidate like Zweifel as a DI OC. I don't know him from a hole in the ground like many of you WW people seem to but it seems to be a reach putting his name out there with a position like this.  I wouldn't think the people in DeKalb could sell that to their players, fans, or alumni - just my $.02!

I have a family connection with Coach Novak, but don't know if I could actually get Coach Z an interview if he were interested.   ;)

NIU has lost two of their most tenured Offensive Coaches this year.  Long time OL and Assitant HC Sam Pittman left to Join Butch Davis' staff at UNC along with Coach Bond going to Georgia Tech.

I think it's pretty obvious why Stan stayed in WHITEWATER for as long as he has and it wasn't because he couldn't go anywhere else.

Bobo, 17 years of service isn't always a bad thing.  It can be a good thing too.  Look at Larry Kehres and Bob Berezowitz as prime examples.

In making assumptions based on your description of a typical Division I hire, the candidate will have spent his prior coaching experiences at couple of different schools, spending a few years at each school, before moving onto greener pastors.  But does the hiring committee look at that fact and get encouraged by a guy who put 17 years in at one instituiton and look at this as a reason to believe that the coach they are about to hire isn't going to use NIU as a stepping stone to "greener pastures"?  I would think that 17 years on the job looks good on a resume.  I guess it just comes down to the preference of the hiring commitee and how they feel about it.  You make good points, however, I personally think Stan Zwefiels 17 years on the job at one school is more of a positive than a negative in his case.

There certainly have been interesting developments recently.  I hope Stan finds what he's looking for in his next coaching venture.  Who ever gets him won 't be disappointed.
