$4000 a year.....$20,000 for five years that would have been OK ......Could have upgraded the tent for more quality tailgating sooner......In the long run it was $$$$ well spent.....

Since Jeeves seems to contradict the UW system's actual Web site, perhaps that should be a sign.

Good luck to the Warhawks backup q.b.s and Danny Jones in their quest to be the number #1 field general at UW- this upcoming fall. I am sure all of these q.b.'s will give it their all to lead a good team.  Be happy that you guys have all these good q.b's in your line-ups as oppose to teams like a La Verne or CMS team (SCIAC teams) who only have 1 good q.b. playing for that spot.

Timerton, goalinestand, ROR and all the ships at sea. I will now try and recount the contest between Mount Union and St Johns in 1993 for a trip to the Stagg Bowl. And the myths that go along with it.

ONE MORE TIME! Set the scene....Dec 1993 Alliance, Ohio. I am having my moring coffee.

I recall reading in our local paper (The Alliance Review) about this team from Minnesota and a legendary coach John Gagliardi. The history, tradition and success of this program was not to be believed. Especially when I read about "The Book of No's". NO practice in bad weather, NO pads or hitting in practice, NO playbook? How could this be? I was truly concerned since Mount had never made it to the Stagg Bowl before.  Some Wisconsin teams seemed to always get in the way. LOL! I sure am glad we are over that! another LOL

ST Johns is coming to OHIO IN DECEMBER! So the weather leading up to the game was pretty typical rain, sleet, snow, more rain, sleet, snow, you can get the picture. Although that is pretty typical for MN in Dec too.

Cut to the chase....here is the game write-up courtesy of RIC and The unoffical MUC website. You did bring it up ROR.

"The Mount Union Purple Raiders simply over-whelmed second ranked St. John's en route to a one-sided 56-8 victory over the undefeated Johnnies at Mount Union Stadium.  How bad was it?  The Raiders roared to a 43-0 halftime lead and amassed 16 first downs to none for St. Johns.   Jim Ballard threw for a Division III record eight-touchdown passes and 325 yards on 20 completions in 28 attempts.  Mount Union scored on five of its first six offense possessions.  Ballard passed for six touchdowns in the first half alone as he out-dueled the Johnnies highly touted quarterback Willie Seiler, who finished the afternoon 16 of 28 with two interceptions.

Ballard teamed up with tight end Rob Atwood for four touchdowns on passes of 4, 43, 12 and 24 yards.  The latter three scoring receptions all came in the second quarter.  Atwood had eight receptions for 141 yards.  Ed Bubonics was on the receiving end of seven Ballard aerials including touchdown receptions of 35 and 15 yards as he totaled 101 yards.  Mount Union's other two scores were a two-yard pass from Ballard to Ed Gresko which opened the scoring and a 65-yard third-quarter pass from Ballard to senior receiver Mike Sirianni.

St. John's legendary coach John Gagliardi called the Raiders, "The best team I've ever seen."  He also referred to Ballard as the best quarterback he had seen.  The Mount Union defense was also up to the task as they held the high scoring Johnnies, who entered the game averaging 57.8 points per game, to a single touchdown and a mere 106 yards of total offense.   The defensive troops were credited with a safety when a retreating Seiler slipped down in the end zone in the second quarter.  Head coach Larry Kehres credited his team's great defensive effort on the fact that the Johnnies lofty offensive statistics caught their attention in their preparation for this game.  He noted that the Raiders defense was focused.  And so was record setting Jim Ballard.

Mount Union 56       St. John's 8

St. John's        0   0   8  0  8
Mount Union 21 22 13  0 56

Scoring

MTU - Gresko, 2 pass from Ballard, 11:29 1st (Ulichney kick)
MTU - Bubonics, 35 pass from Ballard, 8:05 1st (Ulichney kick)
MTU - Atwood, 4 pass from Ballard, 5:39 1st (Ulichney kick)
MTU - Safety, Seiler tackled in end zone, 14:50 2nd
MTU - Atwood, 42 pass from Ballard, 13:07 2nd (Ulichney kick)
MTU - Atwood, 12 pass from Ballard, 10:29 2nd (Ulichney kick)
MTU - Atwood, 24 pass from Ballard, :27 2nd (run failed)
MTU - Bubonics, 15 pass from Ballard, 11:29 3rd (kick blocked)
MTU - Sirianna, 65 pass from Ballard, 5:04 3rd (Ulichney kick)
SJU - Loretz, 19 pass from Seiler, :47 3rd (Malmberg run)
End of article.

Notice John never mentioned the weather or the field.

Now Mount and the local high school had each played 5 home games on the field and Mount had two additonal playoff games there too.

The urban legends/myths are these......."Mount watered the field during the week prior to the game." Nothing could be further from the truth.

1. The NCAA monitors all the playoff schools and their venues and if the field had been ruled unacceptable there were plenty of fields (turf even) 20 minutes away in Canton, Ohio. They have a history of moving games when it is determined the field is not game ready. The field was what it was due to use and the natural weather.

2. Mount ran a pro-style passing attack with Jim Ballard at QB and that would surly be affected by muddy field conditions? Right?

3.The only water that was "applied" to that field came from "THE MAN" upstairs. I am not refering to "Carl" the greenskeeper in Caddy Shack.

It was one of those days. 56-8 is not because of a rainy day and a muddy field. IMHO. Now my opinion may be a little slanted but L K does not need to resort to this. He has certainly proved that over the years.

Myth #2....Mount had longer spikes so they had better traction. If you ever see pictures of this game you will realize that ankle deep is not helped by spikes.

And just to dispell myth #2  I have on good authority that Mount did not even wear spikes that day. They went down to Stambaugh-Thompsons hardware on State Street in Alliance and bought 9" nails.....see the connection now?
They pounded the 9" nails through the soles of their shoes and took the field. ;D

I later recall commenting after the game....Welcome to Ohio football.

Little did I know at the time the winds of fate would send me to MN where I could share this heart warming tale with the many Johnnie friends I have made over the years. (Hundreds, and I am proud to be your friend). Gets a little weepie here. And now I can share this tale with some of my Wisconsin friends too. BDB, badgerwarhawk and now goalinestand....

I am sincere about the friends part....really......can we now just "GET OVER IT"

Please?

We kicked your a$$ just like you did  to us in 2003.......OOOOOOh I just realized that was 10 years apart. Is there something there?
OH just 7 NCAA D3 titles I guess.

One for the other thumb I always say.

On another recent topic mentioned...Raiders have a QB coming from California too...He is a freshman though.

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

Sorry, ROR.  Not only did we wake the sleeping dog, but he woke up barking so loud, he woke up the entire neighborhood!!!  Seriously, that was an awesome post, Raiderguy.  I can't believe you were so elequent and the memory was so clear at that time of the morning.  I had never heard all the details before. Nice job debunking the urban myth but really, what fun is that?  Actually, weather problems, field conditions, shoe issues, lopsided final score (50+ to  single digits,) two high scoring teams duking it out to see who goes to the Stagg Bowl, sounds so familiar but I just can't place it right now, LOL!!!   ;D

What is it Fins says -- the best D1 program in D3? ;D

Oh, as for the field, how does "ankle deep" figure in with "game ready"?

You're going to have to bring a bunch of purple jello shots on Labor Day, raiderguy - which I believe involves some Ohio football.

Any word on a new OC for WW?

No news yet.

I am with 413 on this one the new graphics for the Warhawk website are awesome....As for 99 ....if Danny Jones winds up at Whitewater he will have to earn his spot just like any other player who transferred there. This is college football the best people play and the fact that you have been on the team for 3 years means only you get two free tickets a game for your parents. Widuch, Borzich, and the rest were only offered a chance to play and they made the most of it and if they didn't perform they wouldn't have played.......
Sakman - How do you think the team chemistry will be affected by an outsider coming in for one year.  To me football is a team sport.  I don't think any other sport bonds players together better than football.

As has already been discussed on here, the Hawks have had several quality transfers over the last several years and it sure didn't hurt the chemistry of the 05/06 team.   ;)  Seriously, I think that most athletes understand the competitive nature of college sports.  The best play and the ones that can't live with that don't stick. But certainly transfering in as a QB who will lead the team as the field general for only one year as a senior is going to be a bit trickier.  I think it depends on Jone's attitude IF he comes, (which is still a big IF according to BW.) The attitude that, "I just want a chance to earn my spot and play with the best and hopefully help this team get back to the Stagg," will go along way.  And winning always cures a lot of ills.  ;D

Sakman 1111

First,as BW stated Danny Jones isn't there yet.....if he does come and beats out the other QB candidates he will be accepted like Widuch,Borzich, and others who transferred were accepted. If they lose a few games this year then everyone can complain about lack of team chemistry......but in the long run the best players should play and the players and coaches are the ones who recognize that......

Such a bold comment.  Dont mistake love for respect.  Beaver is the best football player I have ever played with.  I guarantee that Beaver will get NFL looks and just by you saying that he wont leaves me to believe that mentally you are not stable.
If your trying to hurt my feelings by saying I couldnt play in the NFL your going at it the wrong way.  As everyone knows me by name on this board, Max Sakellaris, if you dont.  They also know that I was a pretty good D3 football player which is fine by me. As for you Im guessing maybe your playing days ended with a injury that you are still crying about when you go to bed but of course that is if you even played football.  Maybe your so fat that you cant even see your feet but that is just another guess.  One day you will probably grow up and not hide behind your screen name and tell us who you really are.  Until then Im guessing you played coed intramural volleyball all through college.

Way to go Maxie, I knew you would fire back:)  You are such a rebel coming on here and telling everyone who you are.  That's great, you deserve a medal or maybe a brownie.  I betcha you would like a brownie better wouldn't you Maxie?  Hey, you can say whatever you want about me, that's great stuff:)  I honestly was just wandering if you and the Beave had a little something going on.  I can understand that you think highly of him and I think that's wonderful.  You know, if that was the only beaver I ever seen, I would probably talk about it all the time to:)

Maybe you two could continue your discussions in a private email or something.  It's getting rather old.
