For most field goals, career ... not longest in 2008.
One could argue that kicking the longest field goal means you had a good kick while holding the all-time record means you're a consistantly good kicker.   But I won't because I don't want to take anything away from Birkhofer.  ;)

According to Captain Obvious, one might also argue that kicking longer field goals could be the result of an offensive having difficulty getting a good, close look at the endzone  ;) .  But, I won't because I don't want to take anything away from Birkhofer...he still had to make the kicks.

Ask Wesley about his 49 yard field goal at the end of the first half on a miserable frozen, ice covered field.

And ask me who was first-team All-Region the year that kick was actually made? :)

AAHolder: You are definitely biased, because you aren't seeing that Birkhofer has proven in 2008 that he has better distance than Schebler. If Birkhofer were kicking 18- and 19-yarders his percentage would be pretty good, too.

As a fan of a team with a pretty stinking good place kicker let me just say that the kicker as a weapon is invaluable when you can't sniff the endzone.  And when you have one that can kick a game winner with seconds left into the wind they prove it. (Thanks Alan Munoz)  I'd rather have a kicker that has range than one that can kick one in from the 10.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

AAHolder

Pat, I enjoy the banter :)

But, I do not believe that making (as well as missing) longer field goals proves better distance. It can however prove that he has had more opportunities; which he did capitalize on at times (3/6 50-99 yards). Missing long field goals also doesn't prove a better leg nor better distance. These field goals could've been left, right or short as well.

Jeff has had some 'gimmes' this year, that's obvious. He's also made kicks which have kept WW in the game and helped WW win the game. We could argue this all day, but when you ask any coach what they want in a kicker, 9 times out of 10 they'll say CONSISTENCY, not just the ability for the big all.

Jeff has range, I won't argue that topic. But, if Leipold wants a 19 yarder, that's what he gets: 3 points.

I'm done with this one!

I hate this kind of argument. My take is if there is another kicker that is considered in Shebler's category, and he had as good or better year, then what the hell. He deserves it.  I think it's amazing there are two kickers that good in d3, and WW and Linfield are lucky to have them. Congrats to both. Who's the best? It goes to Birkhofer this year, with Shebs a close second.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

You guys don't have too many games decided by field goals, do you Mr. 63-7  ;) ?

2 this year decided by 3 or fewer points.  The first HSU - UMHB game was a 2 ptr.  The 1st rd playoff game was a last second field goal to win it by 3.  however, on the year Munoz is 7-8 from 40-49 yds.  Nice to know its there if needed.

BTW left out the SOU game because it was an L and I'm trying to blot it from my mind.

They are both outstanding kickers and I would be fine if the roles were reversed (like last year when Birkhofer was 2nd team).  I'm amazed at how many DI games I've watched this year and how many crappy place kickers I've seen and I think it's great we have two in our region that I feel would have been very successful at the DI level.

BTW, I'd be more than happy to post up those 50+ kicks of Birkhofer's.

I guess the Mount guys are tired of playing UWW, too, as this post taken from the ASC board:

Cru Fans,
Most of us here at Mount Union think you'll handle UWW this weekend.

voice, great articles on Warhawkfootball.com!! I'm all for renaming Wisconsin the Warhawk state, rather than the Badger state

Hope you don't mind...I'm going to use that one when I'm with my badger friends...love it!

Hey all...

I haven't read through the hundreds of pages on this board since the beginning of the playoffs.  Were there any conclusions drawn as to why the #4 ranked defending national champs got a #5 seed in the west?  UWW has proven to be everything of a #1 or #2 seed.  Obviously it doesn't matter now that they are in the semis and made it through their region... but I'm just curious.
