Another reference to the "Purple Knights" of Mount Union.  :)

Warhawks set to return strong

QuoteMount Union has no trouble winning the league title—the Purple Knights have won the championship 17 straight years—and rarely have to go on the road for a playoff game.

I have never been comfortable with calling out of individual players but I haven't said anything up to this point regarding this talk about Rusch because Garcon's behavior has been discussed many times on here and I recall even being a party to it when he pulled his ultimate bonehead move last year refusing to come on to the field to shake hands with the 07 Champions. But, I do think that it is time to move on now.

I see where the  team that overcame the 'big, plodding, can't-get-through-the-playoffs, WIAC team' tag, who's been in 4 straight championship games, has an open date in 2009 and 4 in 2010. Will these be difficult to fill? A matter of money or dominance?
Prefer to see the Warhawks on the West Coast again if possible.

Yes, they most likely will be difficult to fill.
Both factors are involved to some extent.  There aren't many programs nearby that want to play us and there are always budget concerns when we have to travel great distances on our dime.  Also there are scheduling conflicts lwhen someone would be willing to play but doesn't have the same date available that we have.

Maybe (haven't seen a schedule) 4 open dates, but Only 3 dates to fill; WIAC plays a 7 game conference season.  Key word, Only .

Has anyone wondered how this financial crisis MIGHT affect UW schools? Is dropping all sports for the 2009-2010 season out of the question? Might the budgets be sliced to the point of canceling long trips etc.? Could the conference divide into north/south divisions to lessen travel expenses? Or will things go on as normal?
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Rusch looked like a hard nosed player to me.  After watching the recording of the game, I did see him jump up after a reception (one time) and spin the ball on the field.  Nothing to get upset about, but I'd rather see a player hand the ball to the referee or leave it on the field at the point of the supposed spot.  Seems pretty weak compared to the normal get up and celebrate after a tackle we see a lot on TV nowadays.

Like Garcon  ;)
Rusch played with the passion and aggression we all try to get our players to play with.  In the Stagg Bowl he just happened to get caught in the middle of a couple of incidents which drew attention to him and his style of play.  Garcon was a record setting playmaker who has advanced to the NFL.  It is unfair to compare the two players.  As a football fan and coach, I didn't appreciate Pierre's grandstanding, but understand it. Occasionally a team can use an individual who can absorb the focus of the opposition and still help his team.  Pierre Garcon has learned a new level of humility playing in the NFL for Tony Dungy that will benefit him.

This will be interesting.  I seriously doubt that all sports will be dropped.   I don't know that just seems to drastic a measure.  And I don't really see things changing as far as the conference alignment is concerned.  Trips could be impacted particularly those in sports who aren't able to fund raise like some of the feature sports do now.

I never really understood what is wrong with playing with a little attitude.  Spinning the ball after a catch I love it and trash talking I love it.  Every great teams has a player like that.  Its an emotional game.

Nothing wrong with a little yappin' and attitude on the gamefield.  From my experiences I fed off the trash talking and attitudes of opposing players.  I was the type of player who liked to talk a little, but definitely not cross the line of sportsmanship.  It makes it that much more interesting.....as long as its not excessive!

I think that emotion and taunting are two different things. Celebrating for a good play is perfectly fine in my book. The fist pump after a sack, screaming with the ball in your hand after a touchdown, things of that nature are fine. When your sole purpose is to poke fun at another team or player then that's bad sportsmanship and it's not fine. Also not fine is pouting instead of being an adult and shaking the hand of a person who beat you fair and square. Just my opinion though, to each their own on that one.

I agree.  Showing emption and being excited is great.  Taunting or demeaning your opponent in any way is not.  There are very few things in sport that I dislike more than poor sportsmanship.  Which is the major reason I'd rather watch D3 football than the NFL.  I can't stand the 'me first' attitude that dominates professional sports.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

While you guys raise this question here, at UT-San Antonio, they've been approved to begin a football program and upgrade their existing intercollegiate sports program.  Any question where the $$$ is?  ;)

Note:  They will not be D3.
