I don't know a thing about these athletes or their programs for that matter.  What I do know a thing about is Stan Zweifel's ability to spot the talent he needs to run his scheme and to coach it.  I also know that we will be seeing a lot more of him and his staff as time goes on.  He is a relentless recruiter.

Considering a large number of the players that made up the 05, 06 and 07 team were brought in by Coach Z, I'm betting there is some legitimate talent on that list regardless of their program's success.  BW is right, he know talent when he sees it and he knows how to develop it.

I just wonder how much of this "finding the talent" is a result of coach Z as a relentless recruiter or was his hiring the Head Coach from the school (Milwaukee Bay View) with the greatest number of recuits on that list, as an assistant at UD, more of a factor?  Kinda makes me wonder.  Anybody else in my boat?  I'm in no way discounting coach Z's influence on this process. Is it only a coincidence?

And off on a tangent, in his time at UWW, did he ever bring in this number of recruits out of the Milwaukee City Conference in any given year? I'd have to crunch the numbers, but I doubt he ever did. My question would be, why now?

The large list probably has more to do with Griffen's association to the HS, no doubt.  It would be an inside source for Z when deciding who to spend time on and an edge getting the players that want to continue to play for Griffen.  As for the point regarding Z recruiting more from these schools than when he was at UWW, others can probably answer that one better than I but with no disrespect intended to UD, he will not have the same bait to use to intice players as he did at UWW, i.e. location, facilities, program success, etc. I am sure he will secure some very good players from Wisconsin but the WIAC and UWW may still have an edge especially for the ones who want to stay closer to home.

My understanding is that Dubuque has very good facilities.  They were one of things he mentioned when he was interviewed after taking the job.

We've never really recruited the Milwaukee City Conference very heavily.  I'm sure we've had players from there but not an abudance.  Most of our Milwaukee area recruits come from the surrounding suburban area.

I don't think it will happen for a while but it wouldn't surprise me to see Dubuque show up on our schedule at some point in the future.  If Z feels he has a team that can compete with ours he'd love to beat us and given the opportunity he'd take it.  I don't know how soon they could have a team that he felt could do that.

Ya, that makes a case for Griffen being the main influence in pulling from the City Conference.  I have never seen UD and I do believe they made some improvements recently and I hesitated when I wrote, "facilities," for that very same reason but then I thought that, as good as UD's may be, it is all a relative scale in D3...............and I thought of Perkins Stadium!   ;)

Just a quick scan on a few WIAC schools roster from 2008, I found Plattville (2), Oshkosh (6), Point (4) and Whitewater (4) have a total of 16 players out of the Milwaukee City Conference.  Doesn't appear to be a highly prized football recuiting territory for at least these schools closest to Milwaukee. UD must know that and with the new assistant coach from Bay View HS now at UD, looks to me like they are taking what they can get - really, what the others don't want.  Maybe they realize going up against the WIAC schools in the suburban schools, Madison, and in the small schools around the state would be an uphill battle at this time. The UD roster is filled with guys out of Florida, so it looks like coach Z might be making a major change in program recruiting philosophy. It will be interesting to see what they do from here on out. I wonder if the Florida connection will continue? Florida to Dubuque seems a little odd.

First, as most of you know, Dubuque is only about 3 hours away from the Milwaukee area. Not the worst drive at all. Some athletes drive farther than that to play in the WIAC. So, I don't know - unless you look at Whitewater - that distance is going to be the determining factor. I know alot of you are talking mostly about UWW, but I thought I'd throw that out there.
Also, BoBo, as far as the FL-DU connection. Yeah, it may sound weird, but I know the coaches at Beloit go down there every year for a couple weeks, and there is a basically recruiting combine that many schools attend. From my understanding, they'll talk to the coaches of the schools that participate and they'll also have connections in that the coaches will nudge players to that school. Just a little 411 on that. I'm sure FL to DU or even BC still sounds weird, at least you know why now. - maybe that's how Garcon ended up in New England and then Ohio?

Yeah, but it will be interesting to see if they're able to win with a bunch of kids from the Milwaukee city conference. There's a TON of raw talent in that conference. I would argue that the kids there are more physically gifted than the athletes coming out of any other area of the state.

A scheduling comment for the audience today...I noticed one of our favorites, the Wesley Wolverines, will be crossing the country to play Pacific Lutheran on Sept 26. Since they are going to be flying over Wisconsin on their way, do you think it occured to them that they could schedule a WIAC school in dire need of NC D3 games for probably much less $$$? And it's in somewhat familiar territory - minus the snow that is! Do you think they want to avoid the WIAC at all cost? It would be fun to see how much fight they might put up in Sept as opposed to Dec.  ;)
