BoBo,

What do you think of Leipold's reaction to the RP story?  IMO, Leipold is coming off a little like a baby.

wc11, from what I've read so far, I would tend to agree...however, there's probably more to the story that's yet to surface.  I do think the student writer of the editorial went a bit overboard with the comparison between these 3 Warhawk players entering a weight room with a character like Maurice Clarett. That is kind of a low blow, but I don't think the reported reaction from Leipold was necessary.  Looking at the smirk on the face of the writer, it looks like he's enjoying his 15 minutes.  ;)

EDIT:  I was actually more entertained by the article about the Pirate Bay court ruling than this one.  I might have to bookmark the RP from now on.  ;)

This just shows you how reacting to a story can do a lot more damage than the story itself....it has gone from the Royal Purple to the Madison and Milwaukee papers

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater issued a formal statement on its Website late this morning:

Whitewater football players act like a-holes.

Reporter from Whitewater school paper sees players acting like a-holes, and reports that they acted like a-holes.

Reacting to the story that his players acted like a-holes, Whitewater coach acts like an a-hole, then has to apologize for acting like an a-hole.

Whitewater fans then blame the reporter for reporting that Whitewater football players and coach acted like a-holes, and fans defend and explain and offer lame excuses for the behavior of Whitewater football players and coach who acted like a-holes.

Typical.

I'm surprised on the national recognition this debacle is receiving. I'm seeing articles coming in anywhere from Florida to New York.

I used to be the sports editor for the RP back in the day, I once wrote an opinion article voicing my thoughts about the interim men's and women's basketball coach, on whether they should be hired on or not. In response, I received a nasty phone call from the interim women's coach cussing me out demanding an appology (which she never got b/c it's an OPINION!!!)

I don't think non-DI programs (DII, DIII, and so on..) are used to being critized in the paper, and when it happens they over react and end up doing something they regret. I highly doubt Jim Tressel even raised an eyebrow to local papers on the bad press Maurise Clarett received a few years back. Coaches in big programs do (and should) have thicker skin than that. they should spend more time coaching than reading the paper.

There was definitely a story there, so I'm glad it was published, but how much is true or exaggerated remains to be seen.

Big deal out of nothing. One of the football players should have beat the crap out of the reporter and that would have been the end of it. As for the soccer coach, he can go lead his band of grass fairies on a nature walk. Take back your apology Lance.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

yea, that's the solution...give the DIII nation more ammo on why they should hate UWW athletics.

reason one:  All the funding
reason two: Recent success
reason three: Player's mawl school editor over article

Leipold did the right thing and took back what he said...sounds like he received some heat from the AD.
