Congratulations to Whitewater for all of the great national press.

As they say in Hollywood, "I don't care what they say about me, as long as they talk about me."

The WW recruits will be up 50% this year. ::)

I especially liked this comment from the Charlie Sykes blog :
Quote8:27 PM Former rp editor 06-08 wrote ...

This has been a boiling pot for years. From justin beaver to danny jones the rp is constantly getting flak for "picking on athletes." There are many figures in ww (uww athletics, housing juggernauts, etc) that think they're above scrutiny because they're a big duck in a small pond. And no one, absolutely no one, would hear about half of it were it not for the royal purple. And at least one bully now knows that whitewater is not a vacuum.

Thank you RP.  I always suspected DJ thought he was above it all. :o

QuoteIn conclusion, at a 3rd tier state supported college like UW-Whitewater, I suspect the average football player seldom remembers to wipe his ass.

I applaud Lance for sticking up for his players, now certain words he used were probably not the best.
But God for bid somebody swear, oh my they probably should have shut down campus.  Maybe even cancelled the season.
Lets call it how it is, the royal purple is a brutal and I mean brutal paper.  I remember one issue where a football player was on the cover of the paper for hosting a party instead of the Volleyball team who had just won the National Championship.
I love that fact that the royal purple is banned.  I am pretty sure UWW football gets enough coverage without the RP.

It is sad to think that he can act like this and think it is okay.  Look at Larry Kerhes.  I do not think I have ever heard of anyhting like this out of MTU.  I do not think Brez had anything like this happen on his watch either.  For UWW's sake, I hope he can figure it out and get his act together because things like this can help begin turn around a successful program.

Doesn't anyone find this policy of having the athletes bring their ID card to the weight room a really dumb policy?  Athletes have physicals/insurance information/emergency contacts on file with the athletic department.  To make them hand over their ID like the rest of the student population is redundant and pointless.  This was definitely not the way to go about challenging the policy, but the policy should be changed.

AO,

It's April and I'm sure at this point everyone on the UWW campus is aware of the ID policy in the weight room.

I don't think this policy should be pinned with blame.  Along with the liability I'm sure that many students bring in valuables (wallets, backpacks, ipods, etc) into the weight room so I'm sure the university wants to make sure that only UWW students are in the weight room to avoid theft.  I know some UWW backers are pissed at the RP but the bottom line is that a player from the team was acting like a jerk and his leader made the molehill into a mountain by going off the chain.  I'm sure it's a mistake that Lance won't make again but it's going to follow him for a long time.

yea, in the athletic department's file...not at the front entrance to the gym which some freshman is working... B/C it's so hard to show your ID as you walk through a door  ::) Just like every university that I'm aware of does. The policy couldn't be simpler or more straight forward

From John Ryan in the San Jose Mercury News:

QuoteRANDOM THOUGHT

Big man, big mouth: The football coach at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater banned the student paper from talking to his team in response to an editorial about players who refused to show their IDs at the student gym until police were called. But before Lance Leipold could send Ogre and the rest of the team to beat up those nerds, the athletic director made him apologize.

An Ogre reference. Nice.

The policy is straight foward, but it doesn't use common sense.  Is that so much to ask?

and if you forgot your little piece of plastic, does that make a recognizable athlete into a complete stranger?

recognizable to who??? you're assuming everyone on campus knows this guy plays for the football team...Being a huge UWW fan, I can only recognize 2 or 3 guys with their helmets off. how would he prove who he says he is??? I have an idea, bring and ID!!...it's been fun, but i'm done wasting space on this board talking about this to AO.

FYI...the story goes that he did have an ID on him...he didn't forget it

Not what happened. From the original editorial:

QuoteWhile I was in the Williams Center weight room April 10, three athletes from one of UW-Whitewater's elite programs attempted to work out, independent of their team, without handing over their student IDs. They had their IDs, they just simply didn't want to perform the laborious task of handing them over to the Williams Center employees. One athlete was cooperative, a second eventually forked over his ID, but the third refused until the police were called. That's right; the police were summoned because an athlete wouldn't take his ID out of his wallet and hand it to the employee. Nothing really happened, and all three were allowed to stay after wasting everyone's time.

Why not get your facts straight first?

A lot of people are in the wrong here but how is the RP writer who used a little incident and magnified it by using a completely out of line title.  How does that idiot get off scott free in the case.

What was the title of the article again?

How did Larry Kehres get into this?  What a dumb comment?

Do the football players in Wisconsin walk around campus with their helmets on?  There's at least a 98% certainty the worker at the desk recognized the players.  let the kids use some discretion.   it's really not complicated.
