TC, just don't say anything then, I would totally be fine with that. If I'm at work and god forbid I'm seen in the hallways by a hall monitor that's seen me everyday without my ID tag, I don't expect to be escorted out of the building is all i'm saying. Usually there are protocols in place like a sign in sheet that you can use for the day if you forgot your ID. This is a small issue blown WAY out of proportion and everyone involved had a hand in making the incident more than it is.

Pat- My problem isn't the fact that it made the news. My problem is the way in which the little scumbag of a journalist lumps every athlete on campus into the same category when in all actuality, it was one or two jerks out of hundreds of student athletes.

Oh, where do I start?  Ridiculously bad behavior by all parties as far as I am concerned.  The program gave themselves a self induced black eye.  Fact is, with the great success the last four years comes increased scutiny.  It is under a national spotlight and everyone involved must be cognizent of their actions, fair or not, that is a fact.  The bottom line here and the lesson to be learned...... they can't fire anything at you if you don't first provide the amunition.  My best advise........get your ID out of your pocket and get your a$$ over to the weight machine!  This never should have been handled in any other way than, "my players were wrong, I have dealt with them and the problem has been corrected."  Story would have had a much more limited shelf life and local run that way.  But it is also very wrong for anyone to paint the entire team and program, in fact, the entire population of UWW student-athletes, with a broad brush because of the actions of a very few.  Every aspect of this lousy situation has been dissected, jabs have been taken, those at fault have been called on the carpet and appropriate apologizes have been made.  I humbly suggest that it is time to move on.

Anyone notice that there has been no piling on by any Raider fans yet?  Speaks volumes, doesn't it?

I'm just glad UW-Stevens Point would never have a prominent member of the administration involved in such a careless display of poor judgement.  Oh, wait.  Nevermind....

Actually, this is just fine with me.  This is the same person who thought UWSP could magically turn into a Division II school with a wave of a wand.

I've been reading, just didn't have any different opinion than others.  I feel pretty much the same as you.  The kid(s) should have taken his(their) ID(s) out and gotten into the weight room and not been stupid about it.  LL should have said it was dealt with internally and been done with it.  Hindsight is always 20/20.  No big deal here.  Much ado about nothing really in my mind.  The more I work with my Middle School Players/Students, the more I realize that people make dumb decisions when they are young, or in the heat of a situation.  Just learn from your mistakes and move on, and don't keep making the same mistakes.

I stand by my point -- and perhaps you missed that this was my actual point in your rush to criticize -- that in the outside world, if a police officer was called, there's a greater chance it would end up in the news.

No, I understood your actual point & respect it...but you may have missed mine. The eyewitness to the event/source of the editorial himself concluded that the whole thing was much to do about nothing. Police or not, IMO it doesn't make this a newsworthy story, a colossal waste of time maybe, but not newsworthy. I guess wastes of time equal wastes of money and that seems to be important when reporting about a public institution. A little common sense at the RP could have prevented this mess. IMO the RP needs to take some responsibility for concocting this one up.

With the UW-Madison program having a bit of a bump in the road with the recruting violations, I think it would be poetic justice if Bret Bielema, incensed that someone from the student paper wrote about his assistants' missteps, announced: "The door is closed.  I have Leipold's number.  Go cover UW-Whitewater. That should be fun."

The players were out of line.  They've been disciplined.  Lance's response was out of line.  He's been made aware of that.  He recognizes his mistake and has apologized to everyone, every way imaginable.  From all appearances his apologies have been accepted.  The Royal Purple has the same access to the football program that they've always had.  It was an embarassing situation to those involved, the university and the program.  What is left to be done is to learn from your mistakes and move on and that is what is happening.

Is there anyone here who can honestly say that they've never said something or reacted in a manner in which they later came to regret?  I know I can't.

Can't argue with that but I didn't get far beyond you calling me naive, I guess.

I agree that it didn't need to be written but I can tell you I've read stories like it a bunch of times. But it's a little different when the coach reacts like that and even more different when the coach is paid by the state taxpayers ... that's why it got blown up outside the campus media, I am pretty sure.

I find it funny that people don't realize that athletes are under the microscope 24/7. If the cops were called there is then a police report filed and it becomes public record.
Also to call the royal Purple a joke is sort of funny. I am not sur eof the facts but the royal purple and tv station at UW Whitewater have produced more professionals in their areas then the football program has in the NFL 2 Matt Turk and Derek Stanley.
The reporter was writing an editorial meaning it was his opnion of what happen and what needs to happen. Leipold was completely out of line and has since apologized. Most likely forced to by the higher ups in administrative positions.
It gives the entire school and any one who attended their a bad rap for while.
I guarantee Brez never did this. Although their were some players after the 05 season who created a controversial website about what the Royal Purple.

Those aren't professionals, those are big-leaguers. Others have gone on to be pros in the sport of football, whether as players or coaches.

To make a fair comparison, you would need to tell us how many people from the RP and TV station work for a Top 30 newspaper or a major news/TV network.

LMAO WOW, your post did more damage to the reputation of UWW than this incident could ever have done.

We are not still debating the IP address thing anymore, are we?  His bringing up VERY old, dirty laundry about a player a few days ago sealed the deal for me.

First, you make no sense.  You admit you haven't a clue of the facts and then you make the comparison as if it's a fact.
Secondly, it's a hell of a lot easier to get a degree in journalism or media (whatever the degree is called) and go to work for a newspaper, tv or radio station than it is to become a professional football player.

I was asking someone to tell me where this person works. Nobody wanted to answer. I'd be glad to remove him if it's the same one ... but nobody gave me a response that I recall.
