I'd have to say being ranked #1 during the season in any sport will bring you $$$$. Therefore, it does matter.

I have been flabbergasted and then enviable of the MUC JV program with, what? 10 games. If they win them all like the oft Stagg Champs do, then that is an indicator what kind of team they will field year after year.

Spare me the research. Does UWW have a full JV program as well?

OK, your team can be ranked #1 in a poll that means nothing in the middle of the season, while my team plays for the national championship in the same sport on television coast to coast, east to west, north to south -- who do you think will bring in more $$$$ then???  That's what we're talking about!!  ;)

Here we go...WHAT are you talking about?
I'm referring directly to Division III football and how, say, Maranatha Baptist, climbs to the top of the poll 3rd week of the season they are going to sell more tickets in their neighborhood. Get ranked highly like Mary Hardin Baylor a couple of years and you have a backing = $$$$. People will travel to see you.

Perhaps I should have used $ instead of $$$$ Division I television sharing cash. That is NOT what I was referring to.

If I remember correctly, WW can only play three JV games?

You are correct, Flash.  We can only play three games and scheduling all three isn't easy because not all WIAC programs have JV teams.  We had three preseason games scheduled this year however one of them against the UW-Milwaukee club team was cancelled by UWM and, to my knowledge, we have been unable to find a replacement.

It's funny how a game can feel so differently to people watching the same game sometimes. I never felt even a little threatened by Sartorelli all day long. He gained 26 of his yards in the final two minutes of the first half when EC was in two minute, no huddle drill and Hawks expecting pass (18 of it on one run) . He had another 18 yerd gain on the first drive of the fourth quarter with the Hawks ahead 31-14. Other than that, his runs were -1, 3, 0, 5,5,2,3,2,4,1,3,-1,6,-1,0,2,2. I felt like this was worth pointing out to accentuate your last point. GREAT JOB DEFENSE.

And this against the leading rusher in the WIAC last year! Other than Coppage of course. I'm biased of course, but I'm pretty sure our O-Line and Coppage won the battle of the top two running backs in the WIAC from a year ago!

Great game all the way around by UWW. I epsecially liked the response to the Bluegolds pulling to within 3 at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. On to Menominee!
Well, I should probably clarify........................I was in the stands AND in the parking lot........ off and on throughout the game.   ;) :D ;D

I must have missed something...I thought EC was doing the no-huddle thing the entire game.  :-\

EC huddled a few times - in the red zone sometimes I remember.  The great majority of the time they were no huddle.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

Honestly, rankings don't matter... and in terms of ticket sales, it isn't like someone is trying to decide whether to go see Whitewater or not, but they decide not to because they're ranked #2 instead of #1.  This is the upper echelon of D-III athletics.  The people who are potential attenders either know this or they don't... but if they don't, then the rankings REALLY don't matter.  They don't have anything to compare it to (unless they compare it to D-I), so they don't truly know the level that they're watching.

On this level, it has a lot more to do with getting the word out to the students and to the community.  The only way that having a #1 ranked team will matter is if you're PLAYING the #1 team at home.  That may get some more people in the seats... but there's really no empirical way of testing that... who's to say those people wouldn't have come out anyway (if, say, UWW was ranked #2 instead of #1?)

Gotta go with BW.......The measuring stick for UWW and MUC is getting to Salem and winning......anything else would make it a somewhat unsuccessful season. Pre-season and polls during the season are excellent conversation pieces but really carry little effect for the final goal. Personally, I believe MUC is the current champ and should be rated number 1 until some one knocks them off......

This guy would agree with you

I think members of the prior and current Warhawk offense will tell you there is really no focus on setting records and keeping players in a game.......it was that way with Beaver, Burns,Wurth, and now Coppage in recent history.
You mean like when Beaver broke the single game record in the fourth quarter of a 38-10 game, breaking his collarbone in the process?

What's your point?  That was the way he was used throughout his career ???
My point, simply following along with the thread was that the record was broken well into the fourth quarter of a blowout.  This was not a reply to bash Justin Beaver.  I guess since he got hurt we will never know if he was just in the game to break the record (would he have left after that run) or simply to run up the score.

I think PointSpecial says it pretty well -- it doesn't matter.

No big surprise here but Coppage was the WIAC's offensive player of the week and was selected to DIII football.com's team of the week for the second time.  Marcus Ball (Stout) also made the DIII football.com's team of the week as did Tom Bruins (Platteville).  Bruins was the WIAC defensive player of the week as well.  WIAC special teams player of the week went to another Platteville athlete, Dustin Bollant.

Congrats to all.

Ball is one guy we're going to have to control this weekend.  He can cause a lot of problems.

I tried taking a look at the DIII team of the week, but that link only shows week 3...and nothing beyond that. I'm I doing something wrong here?

Devil Badger Gopher

Just finished watching the Stout-Pointer game on FSN and it reminded me of the game they played against Whitewater last year.  Statistically outplayed the team, but could not quite come up with enough big plays for the victory.  Stout had 38 to 22 distinction in T.O.P. and out gained in yardage and first downs.  Last year it was a 37 to 23 minute difference and a huge first down difference.  Excited to see what this week brings as Stout gets a chance to stay in the race for a possible playoff bid in a game that will define their season.  Good luck devils.

Congrats to Marcus Ball for the nomination to the POW team on D3Football.com.  Seems to be in time to retrun to last years statistical form.

So Mount Union plays a 12-game JV schedule? What's up with that?  Redshirting is bad for competitive and economic reasons, but this sort of schedule is OK in order to insure the continuation of a dynasty (and keeping the $30,000+/head on hand to help subsidize it)?  Time for Dr. Karner to write a proposal for the private school-dominated NCAA DIII to reject.
