River Falls has 4 losses, by 1 pt to the Johnnies, by 1 pt to Stout in overtime, by 2 to Oshkosh, and by 2 to LaCrosse in Triple overtime. They come to Perkins Stadium on Saturday, so we will know a bit more.

Actually, they lost to the Johnnies 28-24 but still, those are ridiculous stats!  Poor River Falls.  It would not be a stretch, I don't think, to say that without the loss of a certain WR, their record could easily be 6-0!   Certainly not a team to take lightly this weekend.

Did you see the numbers Zweifel put up in this weekend's win over Simpson?  They're staggering.
Thirty receptions for 330 yards and three touchdowns.  OMG

The previous 2009 season DIII high was 22 receptions and 295 yards.

Pat, do you know what the all time records for single game receptions and yardage are?

I think he only had 20...i use the word "only" very loosely...still, what a day...

surprised to see that was only their third win of the season.

You're right 02, my bad.
I'm not sure where I got 30 from.

I am going to agree with stoutguy on his assessment of Whitewater. The team I saw on Saturday was the best WIAC team I've seen in years.
Perhaps they played as well as the could that day. But if they do play that well on any particular day, I don't see any team beating them.

Very high praise coming from the two of you but I am reminded of the 07 Raiders who, when we met them in the Stagg Bowl, had been described by many as, "the best Mount Union team that LK had ever coached!"  It would be best for the 09 Warhawks to keep that lesson in mind throughout the rest of the season.  I'm sure the coaching staff will.

In case the coaches need another example, the 1969 OSU Buckeyes were often considered during the season "the best college team EVER", and Woody Hayes (usually more of a Lou Holtz guy, at least in public) said they were his best team ever.  Michigan 24, OSU 12 (at least in part because Woody went for 2 at the end of the 1968 50-14 rout, ending Bump Elliot's career as UM coach).  NEVER gratuitously add to your opponent's revenge motive! ;)

A trivia question just occurred to me: all WIAC schools are named for the town they're in, except Stout (leave it to Wisconsin to name a school for a type of beer! :D).  Why not UW-Menomonie?  Did there used to be a separate town of Stout?

UW's lone D2 is the same way with UW-Parkside in Kenosha. I am really curious as well why they chose Stout over Menomonie.

The school gets it's name from it's founder James Huff Stout.  It's been called Stout Manual Training School, The Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and finally University of Wisconsin - Stout.

Here's the story if you're interested enough.   http://www.uwstout.edu/history/names.html

Interesting.  Thanks!

Now I can't help wondering if any of the other schools have a similar history, but did NOT retain their 'ancestral' ties?

Another reason I liked WW's performance last week: I didn't have to say "another Marcus Ball sack" on the radio!

I think that is a great point 413......I agree with you that I also thought that the 2007 Raider team was their most talented that we faced and look what happened. The 2009 Warhawks I have already stated could be their most talented but it certainly does not guarantee victory.....It sure is a nice problem to have.....Pound the Rock boys for Homecoming!!....

If I read the What's in a Name correctly, what we know of UW-Stout today didn't become under control of the state until 1911, 20 years after it's founding.  The other schools were established by the state, I believe as Normal schools, each of them with a speciality, like physical education for La Crosse, secondary education for UWW, etc.  Of course they have branched out to include many academic fields...but even when I attended graduate school at La Crosse, it was know an a PE school.  Hence, their success in athletics must have had something to do with that, IMHO (not that all athletes were/are PE majors ~ but it probably helped  ;) )

BlueDevil Bob,

What an honor you've received! You are a real credit to your community, your school and your family. And here I thought you were just a good guy with a nice sense of humor.
Congratulations to you.

Rev. Kelly James Leary

being an alum of another wisconsin d3 team -- I apologize to the WIAC  - we have plenty of teams to play you -- and we (small as we are) would be better for it --

playing the same teams in conference as non conf --  WIAC you beat the piss out of each other all year and then have nothing for the palyoffs (no fault of your own - just a tough conference)

maybe the other teams will ante up -- Im sure it is not the players

yeah - make the games early int he year as a tune up -- chances are WIAC will win but think of the great learning for the smaller schools

20 years ago we were told by admin that playing (then the WsUC) would be a joke and we'd get killed -- so much for support

can you tell this is a sore spot for me?????
