Carpenter did not even kick in the Semi final win over Wesley.. I don't know what the deal was.  He did punt...

Jeff Schebler wins the 2009 Fred Mitchell Award. He was selected for the award, from among 400 eligible place-kickers in Division II and III for excellence on the football field and in the community. His 462 career points are an all-division NCAA record for place kickers.

Current score on the week:  UWW 1  Mount 0 (Jay Carpenter, MUC place kicker was also a finalist)

That's funny, he's the punter

My latest blog is posted for those interested. It's a hunch that looks beyond the obvious as to who might make "the difference" in Saturday's game. These rosters are REALLY GOOD. To some, these players aren't "sleepers" at all, in fact they may be bona fide stars. Others will find a dozen other players they would have listed first. Like I said, these rosters are REALLY GOOD!

Even funnier?  According to his bio, he's the second leading scorer on the raiders with 92 points - 74-79 PAT's & 6 of 7 FG's. Seems he does more than punt, seventies.  :o

  From the Times West Virginian:

FAIRMONT — Jay Carpenter, former Fairmont Senior High School Polar Bear kicking star, is now in his senior season at Mount Union College and with the other members of his class is attempting to establish a new school record for class victories.

Carpenter is doing the place-kicking and punting for the Purple Raider football team that has one of the most amazing records in all of college football.

Under coach Larry Kehres over the past 23 seasons, Mount Union has posted 276 victories and only 21 losses. That's a .925 winning percentage. If anyone can top that, let him step forward.

And Carpenter won All-American honors last season for his work in the classroom. His 3.92 average earned him Scholastic All-American honors through ESPN. That helped make up for the fact he missed about half the season last year with a leg injury.

Kudos to the Mount followers for your nicely choreographed effort, but not everyone on this board was born yesterday. Just like in academic life, there's B.S., then M (more). S., than PhD (piled high and deep). Seems you all earned your on-line doctoral degrees today...congratulations!!  ;)  ;D

I don't think that this means Rocco is going to play.  I have no inside knowledge on this, but if I was LK, of course I would have Rocco out there practicing this week for the media.  If he is not medically cleared to play, it still adds an air of mystery about what MUC will do on offense on Saturday.  Especially at the QB position where they aren't being hit in practice (not sure there is much hitting going on at all this week in practice no matter the position).  I want Rocco to play (gives MUC a better chance to have all their weapons) but won't be convinced until he takes the first snap on offense for the Raiders on Saturday.

Herm Timmersjo handled the placekicking duties in the semis, while Carpenter handled the punting.  Don't know why as Carpenter was the only placekicker in the previous 13 games for MUC.

I'm hunkered in, listening to the forecast for the snow.  I might be staying longer than intended if as much comes as it is calling for.  I attended the Gagliardi trophy banquet tonight and it was wonderful!  Got to meet Blaine Westemeyer(sp) from Augustana.  3.9 bio-chem and OFFENSIVE LIVE!!  What a well spoken young man.  I enjoyed talking to him.  He leaves in the am in order to get back to Mexico for the Estrellas game on Saturday!!
On another note:  8 - 13 inches snow starting tomorrow early afternoon.  I would start coming in earlier if at all possible!!  Somebody coming in with 4 wheel drive so we can still go to Hooters like last year?  Sure hope so!!!
I had a very enjoyable comversation with Coach Kehres this evening.  UWW team came in late and some sat at my table which was equally enjoyable.  Got a hug from Coach Leipold too.  I had voted for Jeff Schebler for the Gagliardi trophy.  He sat at the table. He didn't say anything about winning the other award mentioned on this page.  Congrats to him!!!   It was a fun evening.
Please drive safely!! Can't wait to see everybody!!

Remember that LK can easily remember what BE did to them in '03. I wouldn't be surprised if he took what he learned there, and use Shorts in a similar manner if the conditions dictate.

That's a bit of a stretch. SJU still had a healthy Keating at QB. If memory serves me, they brought in BE as a RB, not as a QB, as Shorts would be doing on Saturday if Rocco isn't a go.

Elliott was THE reason St John's won that game.  He was a beast.

And I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Shorts line up at TB some on Saturday.  If Rocco can't go, the backup Neal Seaman is a very good option QB which would make things interesting with Terrance Morring returning to FB (which he played in '06 and '07), Seaman at QB and Shorts at TB running the triple option.

That was the scenario I had in mind.

OK, we attempted 8 FG's all year. Not exactly Carpenter's biggest contribution to the total team effort. Of course we only punted 40 times, but he did kick 81-87 PAT's.

Watch Herm Timmersjo on kickoffs. Now that kid is a kicker. And yes he was the FG kicker against Wesley.

OH NO another 2nd string player. All is lost ::)

Wow, now there's something else we have in common - 40 punts on the year!!
