Ya, that's who I meant.  Didn't take the time to open the link for the details.  I should know better than to rely on my memory.  Unoffically I've heard that he's likely to end up in the defensive backfield.

Just a reminder of the Cure 33-A Night For AJ Benefit that will take place tonight (Wed) from 7 to 9 p.m. in Kachel Gymnasium.  The former two-time All-American linebacker (2004-2007) for the UW-Whitewater football team was diagnosed with testicular cancer in November and is currently undergoing six weeks of chemotherapy.

Tonight's event will be an  excellent opportunity for students and community members to show their support for Raebel.  AJ and family will be at tonight's event

In Paul Plinske's words to AJ after getting the news of AJ's biggest battle....

We are motivated here at UW-W to raise much-needed support for you. You carried Warhawk football to heights never seen before. It's time we return the favor.  Win this battle, one day at a time!

Summary:

2. AJ Raebel has testicular cancer.  413 is his mother.  She's been keeping us up to date on his treatment and the word is that he is doing very well.

That about sums it up.

Wow!  Very nice recap!  I was just going to say that he hadn't missed much................. a typical off season.   ;) :D

Not having read anything, but reading what everyone else is saying about this, thanks bw for the summary of the last 2 months...however...

...reading #2 made me totally stop in my tracks. That's the only thing on that list that matters. The trials and tribulations AJ is/will face will undoubtedly make him, his family, and his other loved ones much stronger. He will destroy this adversary, just like he did to countless competitors playing a game that he loved. His battle serves as a constant reminder that our journey through life brings considerable adversity - but nothing is as cold, hard, and brutal as this. It's great to see the UWW community, his former teammates, classmates and friends behind him so steadfastly. footballfan413, you know my wife and I have AJ and his entire extended family in our every (long distance) thought and prayer.

On a side note...and I realize it happened a long time ago, but, it's a true shame footballfan413 had her true identity revealed.  As a member of fbf413's "secret society," I'm really glad I was man enough to keep the secret.  ;) :D  Daily +k to 413 forever!!

Thanks so much, BoBo, for the kind words and support.  You and I have been, "behind the scene," friends for some time now and it has been great and I knew you always had my back.  I want to make it clear, however, that I was not outed by anyone but outed myself as soon as the news of his cancer was made public and posted on PP.  Will spare a re-posting of it but you can click on my profile and look at, "recent posts," to read it.  There was no way I could read about my son's latest battle on here and remain incognito.  Everyone has been great and very supportive.
The benefit for A.J. last night, well, there are no words to express how touched A.J., Lissa, and we all were by the outpouring of love and support.  Hundreds of the Warhawk family came together in celebration of my son, so many of his teammates, coaches, friends of he and Lissa's, and many of Steve's and mine, some traveling from Illinois.  A special shout out to A.J.'s former LB coach, Chris Simpson, who flew in from Michigan for the event.  It was just amazing, proving  that the Warhawk Nation is truly a family and the event was a ton of fun as well.  Thanks so much to Dr. Plinsky, Coach Brez and Liepold, Tom Pattison and Justin Beaver and many others for all their planning and hard work.  The money raised will help him pay for medical bills not covered by insurance like co-pays and fertility treatments, as well as daily expenses like rent while he is unable to work for these 6 months or so. So important for him to know he can stand on his own, not worry about finances or be a burden on us, and focus on fighting this disease.   He said it best on his caring bridge site yesterday.

"I've been lucky to know this whole time that I probably wasn't going to die from cancer, but there is still something about a Dr. discussing your survival with numbers that makes you look at your life a little closer.  This last few weeks I've had  lot of time to ponder, and I still don't know what I did that deserves this much love.  Whether you can make it or not, thank you all so much for the support tonight."

The support, and love that he and our family have received during this time has been the silver lining of this very dark cloud and has healing powers.  I told Coach Brez that it has made us feel blessed during a time when the last thing in the world you would expect to feel is blessed!  Thank you again and my love to all!

It is so tough for a kicker to make it in the NFL.  So few roster slots open and so many good kickers in the game whose careers last a lot longer than the average NFL Player.

Good Luck!

Question of the day for the Mr. Wizards out there, or those who have played on a like substance...

I think I saw the UWL men's baseball team working out under the lights on the new synthetic turf football field last night. They were taking fly balls, and maybe doing other drills... Not sure, because I merely got a quick glimpse of them...

But I was wondering what that kind influence that type of turf has on a football when it hits it? Does it deaden it? Or liven the ball's bounce, compared to grass or other types of turf? Or not much effect at all, seeings a football has a mind of its own? What about when it is wet?

I was just curious, because I wonder if the infielders were taking grounders on the carpet - how the turf impacts that baseball? Again, deaden it, or make it skip off the carpet quicker?? And if it is wet, like last night???

Anybody know?

Just Bill

I don't know the effects on a football, but on a baseball it's slight.  Assuming the grass is cut to the same height, a baseball seems to go faster on Field Turf rather than grass, but part of that is you never got a bad bounce or a "slow" bounce on Field Turf. So every ball rolls true for the most part.

I think Field Turf is slightly faster than grass, but it's definitely more consistent. If it's wet it will skip, but so does a ball on grass.

The question about how Jeff Donovan would respond after missing the 2009 baseball season might have been answered in the Hawks' 12-2, season opening win against Augsburg Wednesday night at the Metrodome.

Donovan (JR, Wauwautosa, Wis./East HS) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, including a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning, for No. 15-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater (1-0 overall).

Unreal...an all-around tallented young man. It was nice seeing him get the credit he deserved at the football banquet. He seemed very grateful accepting all his rewards and hugging everyone on stage. When being named MVP, Leipold talked about how much success he's been able to achieve despite all the off-season distractions leading up to the 2009 season. Everyone at the banquet gave him a standing ovation when he accepted the award....it was a great moment.

What an awesome start!  No D3 baseball expert, but from everything I'm hearing I'm expecting the Hawks' rankings to rise as the season progresses.
