WIAC football preview from WSN

I'm surprised it was posted here first, before the WIAC website.

                                                       2009 record
1.  UW-Whitewater (8)                          7-0, 15-0
2.  UW-Stevens Point                            6-1, 7-3
3.  UW-Stout                                         5-2, 8-2
4.  UW-Eau Claire                                  4-3, 6-4
5.  UW-La Crosse                                   2-5, 5-5
6.  UW-Oshkosh                                     2-5, 4-6
7.  UW-River Falls                                  1-6, 3-7
8.  UW-Platteville                                  1-6, 3-7

Just thinking out loud here, but it seems other conferences have the football coaches, those who actually should know the teams the best, pick in the pre-season beauty poll. Why would the sports information directors vote on it in the WIAC? I realize in the whole scheme of things it doesn't really matter, but I think the WIAC SID's wield too much influence!!  ;D  Shouldn't they be more concerned with keeping their webpages up-to-date?  ;)

So why is EC rated so high?  Didn't they lose a lot of players including qb, rb and wr and have a small class of returning seniors this year?  Sounds like a rebuilding year for them.  Or did they just vote by how they did last year?

It is interesting, but not unexpected, that the predictions mirror last season's standings.  Of course everyone predicts the WARHAWKS to finish first because of the past five seasons.  Until someone dislodges them that's a no brainer.  But I'm not so sure the SID from one school knows much at all about the team from another.  Which makes the ranking process somewhat of an academic exercise.  While I think it's a good idea because it creates publicity for the conference and it's programs in reality I don't pay any attention to it.

We've always said that you WIACer's are not all that good at "academic exercises." ;D

Ah, the first I am an intellectual and you WIACers are intellectually challenged comment from the St.Johns Peanut Gallery(Retagent). Oh how I have missed them as they return from ice fishing and other mentally stimulating past times of the non football variety.....

Anyone have thoughts on the new Stout coach?  I am not too in-touch with the newest regime at my alma mater.

I see they now offer a Varsity Reserve team as well.  How has this worked for the other WIAC teams that offer such games?  Good for the youngsters to get that game experience?  Any rules on college year to qualify for the team?

It would be nice to see another rep from the WIAC in the playoffs this season so let's all beat the crap out of the NC opponents to get a second team in the field of 32.

How does everyone see the travel restrictions to play out in the Confernce Games?  We the games be more home team dominated? or will it play better into the hands of the visitor without the distractions of the hotel night stays?

We've had a varsity reserve team for a few years.  Stevens Point has been a consistant opponent but other than that we've had to schedule JuCo's and club teams.  Then they back out at the last minute.   It would be nice if more WIAC programs could start a JV program and schedule one another.   I don't think that there is a college year rule to play on the JV team.  Obviously coaches wouldn't use players who saw regular playing time in varsity games but I think a senior reserve who didn't play could play on the JV team if the coaches wanted to.  Don't quote me on that though.   Admittedly I'm not sure.

Edit: Removing stupid comment

...if i'm not mistaken doesn't Mount kind of have the same thing running for them in Ohio? transfers for whatever the reasons may be from D-1 and other D-2 programs from the around the country?

Not too many.  I could probably count on my fingers the number of D-1/D-2 transfers that have come to Mount Union over the past 20 years that have made an impact.

Matt Campbell came from Pitt in the 90's and we had a CB who came from one of the Dakota D-2 schools who had a cup of coffee with the Detroit Lions, but not too many more.  Garcon was a DIII transfer and they currently have a QB who was a walk on at USF for a redshirt year.

In 2003 the Raiders had Larry Kinnard 6'6" 307 OL who came Mount via Ohio State and played against UWW 2002-3!

Kinnard never played/enrolled at OSU.  There was a transcript issue and his father also had cancer and he decided to stay home in Alliance (went to Alliance HS) to be closer to his family.

Why are Mount fans so defensive about this?  I don't care if all of their players turned down D-1 scholarships at one point or another, if they're playing by d3 rules there is nothing to be ashamed of.

Well, probably because the insinuations are not accurate.

I brought this up for discussion a couple days ago & I'll say it again -- why do the SID's vote on this?
