Can't wait to watch the Hawks scrimmage tomorrow. Will a cheat sheet that identifies the players by number be available?

Your mission Barber Greene, if you choose to accept it, is a complete report on the days activities -- jealous folks, as in, those of us unable to join you, expect you to not only match the numbers to a name -- BY WHATEVER MEANS POSSIBLE -- but to get the inside scoop on all the story lines. Can you be awesome for us, bro?

I'm hoping one of our friends from the "other" side, otherwise known as retagent, will also finish his round of golf and get to the Perk for a report from his perspective, too!!  ;)

"5 things to watch" during Saturday's scrimmage with Harper College.

Great job bp - always a good read. But, what do you know about Lee Brekke, the transfer from UW-L? He never had any stats with the Eagles; appears he never played. And they have been rather weak/injury prone at the QB position for a few years now. Why didn't he play? I have to think the two freshman deserve a few snaps if he does.

Speaking of La Crosse, they have a new Athletic Director.

I will do the best I can Bobo. But without having the numbers to the players my insight may be a little limited. I think I'll focus on the QB play, the kicker, the secondary, and the defensive line.  All other areas are known quantities.

I don't know what happened at UW-L. I remember Brekke from being QB of a really good (9-2) Sun Prairie team in HS.  In looking at his stats, he completed 66% of his passes for over 2100 yards for 23 TD and 8 picks.  I don't know if he even ranks ahead of the incoming freshmen. I arbitrarily decided to not include freshmen in tonight's blog, but not for any particular reason. There are also a couple of D2 transfers on defense I didn't mention that will be interesting to watch (Nick Endres and Jaren Borland).  But I haven't been apprised, nor have I thoroughly examined the roster yet to know of all the transfers or the possible impact freshmen. Another intriguing D2 transfer is Steve Morris, the former athletic QB from Racine Horlick who is making the transition to Wide Receiver. Those who have seen him play think he has a chance to be REALLY good.

thanks bp -- the Brekke thing is a big question mark to me. As with transfers and others changing positions, it's difficult to really know how things might play out...the scrimmage will begin to help sort out the pieces of this years team. Looking forward to more blog entries... ;)

Why is the UWW faithful so consumed by the kicking game? Granted you graduated a great kicker, but saying after the QB, the kicking is high on the list, what about the other key positions? ???

Sorry 68, didn't mean to imply that my list was in order of importance.

I personally find the d-line interesting. The Hawks lost a couple of pretty good players in Justin Ankley and Anthony White. Ankley was the big plug in the middle and White the speed guy on the outside. How do they get replaced?

When you consider that Jeff Schebler graduated as the all-time leading kicker statistically in NCAA (all divisions) history and played a major part in the last four UWW conference championships and playoff runs to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl - YES I think that who will replace Shebs is a major question midway through training camp and fans know it.   I remember the question of "who would replace Gaglardi Trophy winner, Justin Beaver, three seasons ago" was No. 1 on the training camp concerns hit parade. How have Levell and AA done so far?

Pat, just a question, the fan's comments motivate conversation.

68,
I think the focus of the posts have been on the "question marks" heading into camp. Several posts have mentioned defensive line and secondary as well as quarterback and kicker. As far as other position groups, frankly there aren't too many question marks (It just now strikes me you may be baiting us into braggadocio).

The short view of the other position groups:

Wide Receiver: UWW All Time leader in receptions, Aaron Rusch is back. Adam Brandes who had over 1,000 yards receiving and 8 TD's is back.  Talented players who received playing time returning include Cory Robinson (a long reception of 63 yards last year) and David Leaf (came on at the end of last season with some key catches). Leaf and Robinson combined for 6 catches in last year's Stagg Bowl.

Tight End  Starting tight end John Novak (6'4" 275 lbs) returns

Offensive Line: Four of the Five Stagg Bowl starters return

Running Back: Levell Coppage and Antwan Anderson return. Perhaps you remember them.

Linebacker: Starters Lane Olson and Max Ford return. Let's just say UWW is deep and talented in this area.

So, basically, UWW looks pretty loaded in the positions listed above as training camp begins. That's why the questions have centered on QB, DB, DL, and Kicker.  Although unknown to fans, my guess is that most of these positions will more than sort themselves out as time goes on. One thing we've learned is that preseason questions do not equal in-season weakness. It will be fun to see how it all unfolds.

BP,

Great post and summary! +k :) Doesn't sound like the rest of the WIAC has a chance against UWW this season and another trip to the Stagg is very likely!

Great respect for UWW and its fans and I picked UWW #1 for the pre-season poll even if I did not have a vote!

One simple question---Is there anyone on this board that is not a whitewater fan?  How are the other teams in the conference looking?  What do you think are the good and bad things about your teams?

I think every one should take there shot at UW-Whitewater and dethrone the Monster that is backed by BIG MONEY!  Without money, it is hard to create a great program!!!!

GO WIAC miinus the Big Money Monster UWW!!!!

Aren't things a lot more fun when you have someone to hate? ;) Seriously, the balance of power will shift eventually (for whatever reason). Right now, conference foes both hate and love Whitewater in football (probably for the same reasons I both hate and love Point in basketball and baseball).  Everyone wants to beat the Hawks but it brings great recognition to the WIAC.
