Here are the current Massey rating. I wonder how well the schools that don't participate in the playoffs would do if they did participate in the playoffs? Several are highly ranked in this ranking.

The  ONU coach was impressed with UWRF, saying they were well coached and had a good game plan. He also thought that any win over a WIAC team was something to be proud of.

Not taking anything away from the Falcons because they did play a very good game, but I think that can be said about just about any team in this league. The WIAC has some really good coaches and we should all be proud of that. It's one of the reasons the WIAC continually ranks as the top D3 conference year in, year out. A lot of big showcase games this weekend. The WIAC probably isn't favored in many of them, so hopefully we can get a few upsets and shake up those polls.

Well I was browsing through some NAIA message boards and I came accross these two write ups:

Dakota St. @ Wisconsin-Whitewater

Dakota State has had 2 weeks to get prepared for this matchup after their loss to Midland Lutheran. Unfortunately, it won't help. Wisconsin-Whitewater is just too strong of a program, winning their 2nd national title in 3 years and making their 5th straight Stagg Bowl appearance in 2009. The Warhawks are coming off a 35-0 drubbing of Adrian (MI) where they rolled up 472 yds of offense in the win. The Whitewater offense is led by junior Matt Blanchard, who is in his 1st year as a starter. Dakota State will need to improve their 36% completion percentage and force several turnovers to have any sort of shot. That's too much to ask for against UWW. DAC-Man says Whitewater 59-3

Jamestown @ Wisconsin-Stout (DAC Game of the Week)

This game edged out the VCSU/Moorhead game as the best matchup of the week simply because of the excitement that each of these teams showed in overtime games last week. Stout has to be feeling that they gave one away vs. BHSU with their botched extra point, and will be looking to get back on track for their preseason expectations. Jamestown faces the danger of coming off of an emotional roller coaster in their triple-overtime win over Peru State, which featured 7 lead changes before the Jimmies pulled it out with a deflection on a 2pt conversion. Reigning DAC player of the week Mike Beehler gives the Jimmies a slight edge in this one, as I look for the Jamestown offense to stay one step ahead of the Blue Devils. 2-time All-WIAC RB Craig Warminski will keep the Devils close all day though. Don't be shocked if we see some more OT in this one. DAC-Man says Jamestown 35-31

I'm not really sure what all that is going off of... the NESCAC is the #1 rated conference and they haven't played any games yet.

Maybe that's why?

Computer rating systems are always prone to early swings.  I think that's part of the reason why certain ones such as basketball don't come out until there's more data in the entire body of work.

With football, because the schedule is roughly 2/5 as many games as, say, basketball, the rankings almost have to come out sooner to be meaningful... the seaon is only so long.

At least that's my thought... I haven't ever followed the Football Massey, though I have followed basketball for at least 6 or 7 years I'd say.

Blogger Gene, on the UST site, says UWRF will not be a "pushover" for the Tommies. He also reminds his readers that UST has not won a game with the Falcons since 1922. Of course, very few have been scheduled, the last series concluding in the mid-90's with four straight losses to the Falcons.

But that was then. Encouraging is the fact that the Falcon qb, at one point within the last 6 mos. considered to be lost to the team, is eligible. Falcon fortunes without him were questionable. The  ONU coach was impressed with UWRF, saying they were well coached and had a good game plan. He also thought that any win over a WIAC team was something to be proud of.

Coach O thought the first half of the ONU game was the best football he's seen from his team in a long time, but that inconsistency in the second half did his team in.

UWRF will have to play two good halves Saturday to make the game competitive.

I have to agree that any win against a WIAC team is a good win. Especially early in the season, as the physical brand of football over there hasn't taken its toll quite yet. I'm looking forward to this game, as UST hasn't fared to well against WIAC teams in the past. But, it's a new coach, new era, and new brand of football at UST right now, so I'm excited for a good physical football game.

I realize that Polls are just opinions, hopefully, informed opinions, and I know it's part science, part art, and part something else, and really don't mean that much in the big picture, but I do have a question.

Based on history, I'm surprised that you have teams, Wesley, as one large example, ranked as high as you do. Even when Wesley has had a great season, and been highly regarded, they have looked quite weak against UWW. On the other hand, Even when SJU played a crap game against UWW, they have fared better, scorewise. I know that that's "ancient history," but it might be worth throwing in the mix when you look at the current situation.

Ret,
That is actually a really good point.  Maybe my bias against being overly midwest biased caught up to me in that one. I keep reading about how Wesley is so athletic. They were competitive for a good portion of the game against Mount last year. I think those factors outweighed the fact that they were obliterated both times I saw them against UW-W. But I would have been comfortable ranking Wesley lower, too.

Oshfb,
I was going to call your comment about my rankings being random as a little harsh, until I realized it's probably true!  ;D If Oshkosh stays within 14 of Mount, they will appear in the top 25 at 0-2! I mentally erased UW-Stout's loss in order to preserve my pride in picking Stout to get a surprise 2nd place in WIAC this year. If the NCAA regional rankings can pretend NAIA games don't count, so can I (selectively and randomly of course.  ;))

Bobo,
WIAC bias? Told ya so! UW-S and UW-SP certainly didn't do anything good for the WIAC "rep" last week compared to the valiant efforts of UW-O and UW-RF. There will likely be bouncing in next week's poll, anyway! The more I think about UW-S and UW-SP, the more endangered they are. Time to put up or shut up. I may even dump UW-SP for having a bye!  How did you know about my Dakota pseudonym?  ;D

You really do a great job on these projections for the WIAC! Not due to the UWO- Mount Union, just due to the effort! +k  :)

Thanks 68! Obviously putting anything in writing regarding a college football projection is risky, especially if you are willing to pick upsets! But hopefully it is entertaining to people and give them something to "post" about, if nothing else.   ;)

WIAC Cost Reduction Plan Remains in Effect

I did not like that decision last year and I still don't like itl  You should not have to play a Conference team twice in a season.  Reach out and find a conference like CCIW and develop a program with home and aways.

Don't you think they've tried?  It takes two to tango and no one else wants to dance. Other leagues don't care about our problems.

I realize that all the members of the WIAC are Wisconsin State University schools. Maybe they could look outside that small clan and poach another school. You gotta think outside the box sometimes. Maybe Carthage would be interested in joining, since they are in a conference with mostly Illinois schools. There might be other candidates, but just spitballin' here trying to help out my WIAC compadres.
