Danimal, St. Thomas is definitely well on its way to the mountain top.  For example, its game day program vs UWRF mentioned that five 5th year seniors (don't redshirt/grayshirt at a private school, remember? Too costly!) are starting for them and that four Division I players have transferred in this year alone. Starting RG and MLB came from U of M, I believe.

Junior QB Greg Morse shares time at QB for UST.  In an article printed in the Minneapolis Tribune after the Minnesota H.S. All Star game, his coach at St. Paul Como Park H.S., Kirby Scull, was quoted as saying, "Greg turned down scholarship offers from Winona State and others.  A  $40,000 education so close to home was just too good to pass up." I believe the word "free" was actually used, but I know it was implied.  I'm sure some SJU posters on MIAC board read the article, too (the reporter spoke with Gagliardi after the game!!) , and can confirm its accuracy. Secretary of State Madeline Albright once said, "What's the point of having a mighty army if you don't use it?".  My corruption of her words: "What's the point of having a huge endowment if you don't spend (some of) it?"

One of the transfers is an OL from the Badgers, went to HS at Cretin.  St. Thomas would be tough to pass up.  Enthusiastic coach, new-really nice facilities, and a top-notch education and job prospects after.  Financial aid and scholies I'm sure are cutting the gap, closing the gap, or eliminating any gap w/the WIAC.

I'm not positive, so don't quote me ;), but I think Schroeder only played football for one season (1993) at LaCrosse.

WOW, kind of shoots the crap out of that old argument that public school have the upper hand because of their cheap tuition., now doesn't it?   I know from first hand experience that academic money, (Wink, Wink) exists to level the playing field much more than privates care to admit but this story takes the cake.  Never heard it admitted so publicly before.  (the newspaper article is what I am referring to.)

So sorry, Guys, to roll out the ole' dead horse but............ this was just too good to pass up!     ;) :D ;D

The Kestrel is not a B.S.er:

Morse will attend St. Thomas on what amounts to a full scholarship through the school's diversity program. He received little attention from NCAA Division I and II football programs, but did get some interest from Division II Winona State for basketball.

"They weren't going to give me a full scholarship, and I needed a lot of money to go to school," Morse said.

He is going to try to play basketball and football for the Tommies.

"He's going to get what amounts to a $40,000-a-year education for little if any money," said Como Park coach Kirby Scull, who served as an assistant coach for the Metro All-Stars. "You can't argue with that."

Cut and pasted from story by Dean Spiros, Minneapolis Tribune.

[IMO, the UWW teams of the past 5 years would stack up very well. However, it's really too hard comparing teams of today against those from the late 70's and the 80's. The game has changed a lot.I've always felt the '95 team was their best.

I might be in the minority, but I don't think any team from the 80s or quite possibly the 90s could beat the teams of the last five years.  Players are just bigger, stronger, and faster, with some exceptions, of course.
[/quote]

Yes, it's difficult to compare different eras - how would the 49er west coast offense do against the 1960s Green Bay Packers, who probably averaged total yardage in one game that Montana put up in a half?

That being said, I am sure there are previous WIAC/WSUC national championship and conference-winning teams that would be knee-knocking as they got on the bus to go play a Whiterwater team from the past five seasons.... But I'm sure the coach would bring along his tape measure, to show the players that, yes, the playing field is, indeed, 100 yards long from goal to goal...

I'm not positive, so don't quote me ;), but I think Schroeder only played football for one season (1993) at LaCrosse.

I would hope so...i don't think a NFL team would draft a DIII track star with no collegiate football experience... ;)

He was an outstanding track athlete first and foremost and made his living doing just that in college. He did convert to football it appears for 1 season.  Not a bad choice in the long run. Even has a Super Bowl ring. My main memory of him is with the Packers. He had terrible hands at trying to catch the slant or curl route from Farve. Though, his last three seasons in Green Bay he averaged 64 receptions for 989 yards and 6 TD's. Not bad for a 6th round draft choice who hadn't played much football.

"Humble beginnings saw him play only one year of college football at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, a Division-III school in western Wisconsin...snaring 30 passes for 752 yards (25.1 avg.) and 8 touchdowns as Eagles won the Wisconsin State University Conference Championship...Also a return man, he averaged 12.1 yards on 27 punt returns and 24.8 yards on 22 kickoff returns ...Enjoyed an excellent track career at UW-La Crosse as he garnered NCAA Division III All-America honors 17 times...Captured Division III titles in the triple jump in 1992 and the long jump in 1993...Was a conference champion 16 times at La Crosse, he left campus holding eight school track records."

from Bill Schroeder Circle of Friends

Anyone who thinks those football numbers got him drafted, IMO, are mistaken.  ;)
