With the way that the playoff teams are selected, it makes sense why they may shy away from scheduling some teams. At the same time, that can be kind of short sighted. After all, if your only goal is to make the playoffs, then you are unlikely to win a championship.

So I guess I see it as what are your goals?

1) Schedule and play to make the playoffs?
2) Schedule and play to become the best and maybe win a championship?

I have never understood why non-conf play should count for the playoffs.  Simply doesn't make sense.  How can you count games where opponents vary so much (some play tough teams, some don't) and also those are the first games of the year.  Many teams greatly improve after those non-conf games, some teams don't.  Those are the trial games...the work the kinks out games.
Why take your team out of the playoffs right away by scheduling harder teams? While I think playing tougher teams may give you an edge, it isn't everything.  Just playing a tough team is no guarantee it will turn you into a winner.  And if your team loses those non-conf games, it could have a detrimental effect on the players.  It's understandable why coaches don't want to play WIAC teams.
I'm not a coach....just my two cents.

Because non-conference play is the only chance to have any kind of comparison between leagues. How are we going to determine the best second place teams (at-large) if we don't factor in non-conference games?  Without them, its just a bunch of schools playing in their own little bubbles and choosing at large teams would be simply guesswork.

It's the annual issue with the NESCAC. They never play out of conference so no one knows their strength relative to the rest of the country.  Fortunately, they also don't play playoffs so it doesn't matter for at-large purposes, but if they did, how could you possibly compare the NESCAC second place team to any other team in the country?  You couldn't.

Non conference games aren't exhibition games. They count in every level of college football including BCS. They count in every level of college basketball.  I can't imagine why you wouldn't include them.  That would be like the NFL not counting out-of-division games for their record.

Do we(UWW/WIAC teams) ever play teams in the Midwest Conference (Like St. Norberts or Ripon)?  I was just curious...

Go Warhawks this weekend!  Ill be there at 9am in the parking lot :)

UWO played Lakeland in 2002 when UWO finished 4-6 (2-5 conference) and beat them 33-14.
UWO played Lakeland in 2003 when UWO finished 4-6 (1-6 conference) and beat them 26-23 in 4OT.
UWO played Lakeland in 2006 when UWO finished 5-5 (3-4 in conference) and beat them 31-10.
UWO also played Ripon in 2006 and beat them 57-0.
UWO played Lakeland in 2007 when UWO finished 7-3 (4-3 conference) and beat them 62-7.
UWO also played Ripon in 2007 and beat them 44-6.
UWO played Ripon in 2008 when UWO finished 4-6 (2-5 conference) and beat them 14-13.
UWO played Ripon in 2009 when UWO finished 4-6 (2-5 conference) and beat them 40-16.

I believe UW-EC played St. Norberts in the 1st round of the playoffs in 2006 and barely beat them.

It was 2007, but yes, Eau Claire won 24-20.

Ill be up at 6am and on the road by 7am.  We are about 2 hours away from the Perk.  Tomorrow night im going to make some chili for the tailgate!  I hear it might be a low scoring game?  Is there any truth to that?

???  That ones got me scratching the few hairs I have left on my head, UDDB. I mean, afterall, college football isn't professional wrestling, roller derby, or a Harlem Globetrotter game. The outcome isn't known before it is played. Exactly how would anyone know the answer to those questions with any certainty? BTW, who told you it might be a low scoring game, P.T. Barnum?  ::)   ;)

That's true, it might be a low scoring game.

It's also true that it might be a high scoring game, or it might be a very average scoring game, or one team might score a lot and the other team might score very little, or both teams might score almost the same number of points.

A meteor also might explode over the field and rain tiny flaming pebbles down on the spectators.

Might is a very powerful word.

Wait, are you saying professional wrestling isn't real?  I dare you to say that to Hacksaw Jim Duggan's face!

Warhawks had a home/home series with St. Norberts in 04 and 05 and with Lakeland, from the NATHC, took their knocks in 05 and 06.  Neither wanted to re-up and I can't say I blame them.   ;)
Wasn't it last year that Lakeland met up with Whitewater in the first round? I don't think that game was even close, once the whistle was blown.

UWW 70 - Lakeland 7

The game was tied 7-7 for about 2 minutes.

I was a little shocked. I remembered whitewater scored on its very first play. I think Donovan aired one out to Wells for a long TD. then Lakelend came right back and marched down the field for a TD to answer...I was like uh-oh  :o

Are there any of the UWW fans on here thinking they may get knocked off this weekend against Stout?  Kinda interesting none is talking about the game on here one bit.

I know Stout has not fared well as of late against UWW no one has), but still surprised at the lack of chatter over this one.  First time I have choosen against my beloved Devils on the Pick 'em, but would gladly get it wrong.

The only thing that scares me is a really solid passing attack with a good offense line. that might give their inexperienced DBs trouble. As shown in a couple of series at UWP last week. I'm not too scared of giving up tons of rushing yards, b/c I love our LB's. With UWW's offensive line, and their running game...it'll be a tall task for Stout to come into UWW and win.

Then again...i was probably thinking the same thing a few years ago on homecoming when Point beat us.

It seems like there are two times during a game when teams have some offensive success against the Hawks.  During the first quarter until the Hawk defense can make adjustments (like Platteville last week). And at the end of the game when the third string defense is in.

A good strategy for beating Whitewater is to score 42 points in the first quarter against them  ;)

the third quarter is when the real damage begins...I think the Hawks are out scoring their opponents 69-0 this season in the 3rd.
