I noticed something reading the recap on RF's website. All the players listed are from MN, maybe that's why they don't have the best talent? The people from Minnesota mostly have to have been picked over by all the DI, II and III schools their first before deciding to come to RF.

This is the quote.  A lot more talent in Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro area than all of Wisconsin.  They can fuel all of their D2 programs, Iowa and Wisconsin as Gophers do not get the best ones, and the top D3's in the state, St. John's, St. Thomas, and rest of MIAC.  One sample score from a HS border battle 42-3 Minnetonka over Stevens Point.  This is a clear example of how two of the largest schools in both states match up against each other with talent.

The sentence in question has a question mark after it inviting discussion.  It is not a statement.  From my perspective, talent comes from everywhere, but the ability to attract depth of talent may be based upon the success of the program and proximity to areas of density of talent.  UWW attracts from the Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago area where you have a huge number of high schools.  The success of the program then helps promote the program.

It's impossible to compare two entire states based on one score.  And furthermore, there's a lot more that goes into the quality of an athletic program other than just enrollment.  The top program division in Illinois this season is 7a (enrollment threshhold: 2023-2603), not 8a (largest schools) and the best school (Wheaton Warrenville South - 2321) is dwarved by some of the 8a schools.  There are 77 schools with a greater enrollment.

Just because SPASH is one of the schools with the highest enrollment doesn't mean they are indicitive of the level of competition from the entire state.

Point Special

My point was not whether large high schools produced better athletes than smaller high schools, it was more the sheer number of athletes available in an area that might know about the school and follow the program.

Well, the top ranked school is in 7A this year, but of the top 5, two are 7A, two are 8A and one is 5A.

You know it is typically that way.  In our high school conference we have both 8A and 7A schools and they compete all the time.  Non-conference games the same way.   Whether it is WWS or Lake Zurich or a couple years ago Prospect, the 7A teams routinely compete with the 8A.  I was not on the size does matter kick  ;)   I really was trying to highlight the tremendous number of athletes within a certain geographic radius from UWW.

That's a good insight about Jenkins, about him maybe not playing hoops if he indeed progresses further along in the scouting process than the stage he's at now. I hadn't thought about that aspect of it; if I recall, there were 24+ teams that requested film of him...

My thoughts were about him perhaps making a team in a role as backup WR, which, considering he's a D3 player, the odds would be against him, but...

Can he perhaps play on special teams? Can he return punts/kicks? And maybe enhance his role on a team by being the backup punter, too?  ;) Heck, as a WR, and if he can punt, he has to have good hands, so maybe we can make him a holder for PATs and FGs! too. ;)

It would be neat to see him get a shot; like you say, he's a good athlete.

One thing I heard last year is that he was being considered as a punter.  I'm not sure what happened with his stock as a punter this season, but he certainly seems to have the skills to catch the football and do something after the catch.  And there is a precedent for D-III receivers making it to the NFL.

We're having fun on here now! Ha. I thought we all learned our lesson on this one, but I guess not. Ha. Since the pot's stirred again, and the beehive has been rattled, I'll chip in again. Ha.

Bobo says to Janesvilleflash: Don't even for a second suggest you can make personality judgements on people you have never met and will never meet over a statement as benign as saying a team played soft defense.

Hey, I resemble that remark, seeings my shrink had this to say about me on this site:  You need to get a grip, man...if there was ever a loose cannon, with a short temper, it's you. You bitch and whine why posters don't read/respond to your posts. How can that be a surprise? You hand pick a post or two, take them completely out of context, then act like a little boy on the school playgound who the others won't let play.

Carry on, gentlemen!  ;)

Oh, Beyond Prime: Stick around! Our little soap opera here is just getting good on here. Ha

Any idea when the Regional rankings will be out?  Some good discussion in other Conference Boards on potential number 1 seeds and who might be moved into different regions.

If  UWW wins in a blowout this weekend, the soap opera intensifies.

Otherwise, we can go back to discussing the Illinois high school divisions.

That's all and good, but UWW still has ways to go before this is relevant WD. Whitewater still has to take care of business these next three games. Not too many people are looking past this game, especially after what happened two years ago for homecoming against UWSP.

And trust me, IF UWW does end up running the table in the regular season we won't have to worry about what's going on down in Naperville (or any other part of the country), UWW will get the number one seed.

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it  ;) But I like your enthusiasm  8-)

Mr. Ypsi

WarhawkDad,

Those stats seem totally irrelevant to me.  As 02 Warhawk pointed out, UWW (if they TCB) will be a #1 seed - but they are West, NCC is North.  IF UMU goes 'East', the relevant stats are NCC vs. the Tommies.  UWW can be #1 either 'West' or 'North'; would the region 'bereft' (or 'freed of' ;D) UWW be better served by NCC or St. Thomas?

Personally, I say the NCC/Wheaton winner is a perfectly legitimate 'North' #1 (assuming UMU goes 'East').
