Am I hearing it right, you travel first round ??  And UWW didn't pull a #1 seed--Holy crap Batman, what is going on back there

GHC

You heard it sorta right. If all the top seeds keep winning UWW gets the first two rounds at the Perk. After that we'd have to travel to NCC and then to Wesley if all the top seeds keep winning.

I don't think there is a conspiracy to not schedule UWW or the WIAC, but there's simply no motivation to do it.  The weaker teams don't need the beating, and the stronger teams eventually benefit in the playoffs by not doing it (as we've seen this year).

Frankly, they only team that would be motivated would be an unusually strong team from a traditionally weaker conference.  They probably can't get a Pool C bid anyway, so a loss isn't damaging, and they will gain big experience (and survive the physical beat down) that they can take back to their league to claim the AQ.

A couple years ago at the NCAA Convention, Gary Karner (WIAC commissioner) called a meeting for as many Midwest ADs and Presidents as he could gather. (The word is he may have been somewhat less than forhtright about the purpose of the meeting in order to get them there.)  His message was "You guys have to play us in football."  The overwhelming answer was a laugh out loud, followed by "No, we don't".  And they were right, they don't have to.  The negatives severly outweigh the positives for them.  As long as they can fill their non-conference schedules, they don't have to pick up the phone when the WIAC calls.

We in the WIAC can hate it, and stamp our feet and call them names, but it doesn't change the fact that they have no significant motivation to play us.  Until that exists, this continues.

The geographic placement of the top conferences doesn't help either, because UWW is surrounded by three conferences (MIAC, IIAC, and CCIW) whose teams have a shot at Pool C and thus have a large disincentive to schedule UWW.

Here's a "solution" to the WIAC scheduling difficulties...

There are six NAIA tootball conferences with seven or more schools.

Have Karner call a meeting to demand that they defect to NCAA DIII.  The six Pool C slots will disappear, and the MIAC, IIAC, and CCIW people will begin answering the phone.

LOL!   Thanks for stepping in, MJ.   You had no way of knowing but GHC is, "dumb like a fox."

I don't know that it would have made any difference because after years of deviating from their published criteria the selection committee chose, in our instance, to rigidly adhere to it this year.  But I have to admit I'm dumbfounded that the committee chair would be so clueless as to publically make a statement that indicated the committee was unaware of the two programs' common opponent.

Some things to consider.

A loss to UWW, or any WIAC team does not do too much harm, if you win your conference which has an AQ. In fact, you would be better off losing to UWW than any other WIAC school, at least in recent years, than to another WIAC school. How does the strongest conference in DIII get only one playoff team?

You can pass these gems along to the Powers-That-Be to use as arguments on why to schedule UWW. ;D

I'm doing some research on the mascot of our opponent and I come across this. "Grizzly bears have one of the lowest reproductive rates of all terrestrial mammals in North America." It's a fact, I got it from Wikipedia :D

On a serious note, I think it's pretty cool that they have the strength and conditioning program available for download from their website. If I ever find some eligibility hidden in between my couch cushions I'll know where to go to get back in shape.

Makes me think this conference call was more time the committee members have put into this than the whole rest of the year combined.

Here's a question: Why doesn't UWW schedule some D2 teams for non-conference? When I played we did that and we usually beat them. Would that help the SOS even more than playing weak D3 teams? How would the NCAA view those games? They would have to be better than playing NAIA teams right?

I'm in a fairly well lit room, and after trying to read the page in the original colors, I was dizzy and couldn't see straight!  LOL

In theory these games wouldn't count any more than the NAIA games do.

Only Divison 3 teams count toward the strength of schedule.

And it takes two to tango. Why would a D2 team schedule Whitewater? I think Whitewater would have a good shot to beat all but the Top 10-20 D2 teams.
