If that's the case how do you account for the large numbers of students who attended every other home game?  We had large student groups at virtually every home game this year.  I thought the numbers were outstanding.

I've never spoken to a student yet that has indicated they would like us to lose so it's more exciting.  No offense MJ but that's just nonsense.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the numbers drop significantly when they have to pay.

The two big student crowds were on Family Day and Homecoming, where there are always big student crowds. The other games reminded me of what he had the last few years at normal home games. And I am a student so I have talked to many who think it's boring that we win all the time. As for paying they really don't have to pay, there was an easy way for every student who didn't want to pay to come for free. My roomates and I got our free tickets, it's more to do with not really caring enough about the team in the end.

Several things impact student attendance at games this time of year....even us flatlanders have come to expect it.  :D

1)  The cold

2)  Deer season

3)  Belief that the first round and second round of playoffs will be blow-outs

4)  Cost of tickets

As a UW-W fan, I was embarassed by the size of the crowd yesterday, especially in the student section.  I think there were about 25 students total.  Next week will be even worse.

There were a couple hundred.  Just doesn't look like much in a stadium the size of the Perk.

Somebody needs to give those students a reality check.  I've followed the team for over 40 years and I've seen my fair share of losses and disappointments.  Do they even have clue that they are living through the greatest era in UW-WHITEWATER football history?  Runs like this don't happen very often.  They idea they're bored is incredible.  How spoiled can they get?

Pretty spoiled, but as I said I don't think they really follow the team that much. They care more about the Badgers and Packers even though they can't easily get to those games. I think they are more flashy to them and most of them don't think D3 means anything and they believe nobody really cares. It is just disappointing in and of itself.

Great time at the Perk as always yesterday.  Congrats to the Hawks and staff for, "one down."  Yes, the first half was more of a nail biter than we would have liked but I agree with BW and Pat. This was a top 25 team who came with a good game plan, had some very good athletes and gave us all we could handle for the first 25 minutes or so.  I thought their QB was outstanding, very mobile, with a quick release and threw some bullets. He found his receivers very quickly and WAY too open the first half, my biggest concern at the time but I am guessing that will be addressed in practice this week.   Unless we are playing an absolute cupcake, which the Grizzles are clearly not, it is unfair to expect that we should be leading by 2 TD's shortly after the first whistle blows.  Remember that Franklin knocked NCC out of the play-offs in 08, the year after we played them at the Perk in 07.   I give more credit to Franklin than worry about the Hawks phoning it in.  While a good play-off team may hang with us for 2 quarters, it will take a very talented team to do it for 4, IMHO. Brekke did a terrific job, got some important play-off game experience and yes, MJ, I do see the resemblance to Justin Jacobs.  Just great to know we have that ace up our sleeve.
About the attendance, deer hunting kills it every year!  Not just students, some of my female friends showed up to the game as hunting widows.  While it was a small crowd, I enjoyed how animated many of the fans were.  I'll take 3,000 yelling for the Hawks over 12,000 sitting on their hands any day. For the most part, our students are great fans and I don't buy that most of them are bored with winning or don't care about the team or games. Some weekends have conflicts and hunting/Thanksgiving are two of the worst but I have seen a steady increase in interest in the team by the student body over the last 5 years for the most part.  The rest of us just have to raise the roof to make up for the lack of numbers when it happens.   ;)  Just my take on it, I tend to be a, "glass half full kinda girl," especially when it come to my Hawks!   ;D
And finally congrats to Franklin and their fans.  Great turnout, the best visitors tailgate I have seen so far at the Perk and that says something given that the Johnnies and Wabash fans represented very well also.  Now on to Trine!

I remember a time where 5480 people in the stadium was a massive attendance number.

Being someone who's followed the Warhawks for almost a decade, this has been the year where we've had, by far, the largest crowds out of any other year. Yeah it sucks when deer hunting takes precedence over supporting your defending national champion football team but there are a lot of things that deer hunting is more important than in Wisconsin. I know that the attendance numbers sucked big time yesterday but it could be MUCH worse.

Coincidentally both Justin Jacobs and Lee Brekke are former Sun Prairie Cardinals.

Those of you who post on here are similar to why we Johnnies are the way we are. Just as we have an attachment to St John's that goes deeper than having a good football team, so do you. The trouble is, you seem to be the exceptions. I think that the majority of we SJU alums have an attachment that is unique. Unfortunately, I don't see that from more than the people on here. It's not a criticism, it's what I think separates the mentality. Again, I think I'm addressing those who are not "guilty" of this observation, so just think about those you know who don't go to games because they cost $10, or it's deer season (we have those too) or it's a little cold.

Why did Tri-State change their name to Trine? Is the name Trine the result of some kind of corporate naming rights? Is the name Trine an amalgamated name? If so, what? Was it named after a big financial donor? Just a little curious. Anybody know?

How many students were even on campus last weekend?

And, the game was televised over the UWW system, so you could sit in a dorm room and watch the game.

It's really not a unique problem in Division III, and winning, frankly, doesn't have a lot to do with it.  With a few rare exceptions, low student turnout for D-III sports is the norm.
