There seems to be a consensus building on the OAC board and to a lesser degree, the CCIW board, (HScoach and Usee excluded,) that the Warhawks are going to lose this game for various reasons but the logic that seems to be coming up the most is that our defense is just not good enough.  Evidence is that we let Trine hang around for 3 quarters and score 31 on us and Franklin for the first half.  Questions swirling around the Warhawk Defense?   We have gone from, "UWW isn't the overall #1  ??? to they can't win their region."  ??? ::)
What do you guys think?  Did we play cupcakes or talented teams and did these 2 games expose the Warhawks as a lesser version of previous years?

Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, which seats 5,500, was completed in 1999, while the Jay and Dot Buikema track was resurfaced in 1997 and a Safeplay Plus artificial playing surface was installed in 2002. The stadium serves as the home site for North Central's football, soccer, lacrosse and track and field teams.

The Stadium has hosted numerous high-profile events, including the Illinois high school boys and girls soccer state finals and the Wes Spencer Crosstown Classic, the annual showdown between Naperville North and Naperville Central high schools. It also served as the temporary home of the Chicago Fire for two seasons.

How cool would it be to travel 4,000 people? The vistors out number the home team like the Cubs @ Brewers games. Turn that stadium into Perkins Stadium- South Campus.

Its very possible that your two first round opponents were just playing really good football and a had a good game plan.  Quite certain UWW did not play cupcakes during the regular season.

We played two of the best offenses in the nation quarterbacked by two of the best qbs in the nation.  Many of us have realized that our defense would have it's hands full when we faced prolific offenses with elite quarterbacks and we did.  The main thing is that in both instances we were able to adjust and when push came to shove we played well enough as a team to win and advance.  I said it before and I'll say it again.  Those things which do not kill you only make you stronger.  We're a better team for having played those two games.

I think that Franklin and especially Trine had better offenses (due to outstanding quarterbacks) than we have faced all year and that cause defensive headaches.  But we had more than enough offensive firepower to overcome those headaches and when combined with adjustments at the half, UWW prevailed.

I think we match up better against NCC than either Trine of Franklin because NCC is mostly a running team and our defense excels at stopping the run.   The question will be whether our offensive can run the ball and generate points.

I think we will and I actually believe playing Trine and Franklin helps us as we go farther in the playoffs.  Just my $.02

Yes.....the numbers don't lie.  The offense is a machine(even with the backup), but the defense is certainly not like the last few years that Mount has faced.

Looking at the statistics, Trine and Franklin both in the top 5 in scoring in DIII (rough way to start the playoffs). NCC is ranked 17th in scoring, which is still really good, but not Trine and Franklin good (statistically...that is). NCC's strong suit is their running (not their passing) which plays right UWW's defensive strength I believe. NCC's passing stats look similar to that of Platteville's, which is good but again not Trine and Franklin good. If they do rely on their passing they are 107th in sacks allowed...allowing close to 2 sacks per game, which again plays right into UWW's hands.

Overall, I agree with HSCoach, I think we match-up well with NCC. But then again, this is all on paper, the Hawks still have to execute this Saturday.

Ya, I knew all that.  Just liked reading it again and trying to play the, "disrespect," Card, pardon the pun. I get a little overly protective when it comes to Warhawk DEFENSE!   ;) But then, FormerCard comes along being all respectful and polite and took some of the fun out of it!   ;) ;D   Just kidding, FC.  +karma

Oh and BTW, to play devils advocate, the argument that would be made is that Franklin and Trine's offensive numbers are gaudy because they play in such weak conferences but I didn't see "overrated," at the Perk from either team.

You saw those two offenses and quarterbacks 413.  I know their schedules weren't the toughest but personally I thought both Franklin and Trine could have played with anyone in our league.

Without a doubt, BW.  My opinion too.  Much more of a challenge than we have been use to facing the last few years in the first two rounds.  But being #2 this year, we didn't get to play the St.Norbert's/Benedictines, etc. of the brackets like the #1's did in the first round.   ;) ;D

I believe it's all much ado about nothing:

FACT: UW-W faced two of the top 4 quarterbacks in the country. They both made numerous plays that very few QB's would make. Both are seniors and Gagliardi Award candidates. Plenty on the resume' to establish they are the real deal.

FACT: UW-W held Trine to 15 points and 120 yards below their season average.
FACT: After making adjustments, Trine's only second half points were on a 1 yard scoring drive.
FACT: UW-W never trailed and won the game by 14 points.

FACT: UW-W held Franklin to 24.6 points and 112 yards under their average.
FACT: Ray came into the game completing over 73% of his passes. UW-W held him to 55.6%.
FACT: Ray came into the game with 7 interceptions in 10 games. UW-W intercepted him 3 times.
FACT: UW-W never trailed and won by 31 points.

Me thinks expectations are a little crazy. These games are over. UW-W did nothing but get better by playing in these games.  UW-W gave up 86 yards rushing in two games.  That is NCC's forte.

UW-W will win the battle of the line of scrimmage like they always do on Saturday. And they will win going away....like they always do. No worries!  ;D

As the Guru would say....

Let's discuss (sports) in a positive way, sometimes kidding each other with no disrespect.

;D

But seriously, there is no real underdog in this game IMO.   UWW's past success is undeniable and NCC's emergence onto the Division 3 national scene  has been nothing short of incredible.  There will be a ton of talented players going at each other on Saturday and I just can't wait!

P.S. I will try and get better at being sarcastic, but it just isnt my nature unless I am going at my fellow Cardinal Posters and all of our shortcomings as players...haha  :)
