Question for Purple fans

What was the tipping point? What I mean is this...what was the change that began to bring this great success to your respective programs.

Mout--early 90s and they went from a very good program to elite

WW--in 2000s it seemed they took things to another level...

I am always fascinated on how people build "programs" and these two certainly got the formula working  ;D

>90% off season weight room attendance for several years straight, facility upgrades to help recruiting, hating UW-LAX A LOT, but most importantly, striking luck in the recruiting process and landing a good crop of athletes a few years in a row that were good but willing to work harder. It's not rocket science, it's MAGIC. Make A Greater Individual Commitment ;)

Seems both purple teams shared that bit of motivation.  Perhaps we should all send LAX a thank you note.

just curious--player development--yea weights--but everyone does that--seems that there is a true connection with the players and coaches at WW--insight?

Haha, you know what I never thought about that. To add another cliche to the many, I guess what doesn't kill you really does make you stronger!

My point is that it's part of the culture change around there. There's very little tolerance for people who aren't working absolutely as hard as they can at all times. It isn't something that needs to be mandated by the coaches, the players do it themselves. If you aren't busting your hump you won't fit in socially as well as into the scheme. So it's more than just "yeah everybody does that". It's seriously the highest priority of everyone in the program to get better every single day. In a way, I guess that proves your point. There is a true connection between the players and coaches. They work their tails off because they want to do it, not because they have to do it.

In June of 1996 my wife and I attended the 15th reunion of her graduating class, which was also Larry's class.  Each member of the class was asked to fill out a questionnaire.  One of the questions was "What one thing do you want to do before you die?"  Larry's answer - "Beat Wisconsin LaCrosse."

Boy am I glad I read this board. Where else would I find such hard to find knowledge. Let's see; in order to not have UWW and UMU in next year's Stagg Bowl, someone has to beat them. And to do that, you have to get better. Man, I could not come up with this stuff on my own. I wonder if anyone knows that if I want to lose weight, I have to eat less and/or exercise more. In order to be wealthy, you have to earn more money. Any other gems out there? :o

Exactly.  Lucky enough to stumble onto a couple really good recruiting classes mixed with a bunch of hard work and a little luck in getting the ball rolling.  The lucky part is expanded upon below.

The Mount Mystique and the LK half-time adjustment reputation came at the expense of Rowan and KC Keeler.  Part of it was LK being a great coach and part of it was Keeler being an arrogant ass that thought he was much smarter than he really was.  When Mount beat Rowan in the 93 and 96 Staggs, both times Rowan was a much better team.  Bigger, faster, stronger but were a little sloppy and not well coached.  In the 96 game where Rowan led 24-21 at the half, Rowan's TB Jyi Peterson was killing Mount on the ground (still think JP holds the Stagg record for with 10.8 yds/carry).  Rowan had run for 206 yards in the first half, but once Mount took an early 3rd quarter lead Keeler got fancy and started throwing the ball almost exclusively and imploded on themselves.  They finished with only 266 yards rushing after gashing Mount in the first half.  A game that Mount was lucky to be in at halftime ended in a 56-24 route.

LK gets a ton of credit (and rightly so) for his halftime adjustments, but IMHO a good portion of that reputation belongs to KC Keeler too.

On the flip side of this scenario is the Mount /UWW Stagg in 2005.  When Mount opened up a 28-7 lead in the 3rd quarter, the Warhawks kept playing and made Mount hold on for the 35-28 victory.  If that would have been a Keeler coached Rowan team, Mount's 28-7 lead would have ended up a 49-7 blowout.

Bridgewater in 2001 fought thru a Mount scoring on a 44 yard INT return and Chuck Moore's 95 yard TD run to open up a 30-13 lead late in the 3rd, but rallied back to force Mount to recover an on-sides kick and pick up a couple first downs to run out the clock on a 30-27 win.  The Rowan teams, while being more physically talented than Mount, would have folded once Moore broke the long run.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Just saw some interesting stuff on footballscoop-http://www.footballscoop.com/the-scoop.Supposedly one of whitewaters assistant coach interviewed for the head coaching job at rhodes college in memphis tennessee. It didn't say who but my giess is the co offensive coordinator since he had coached in tennessee before.

I could go on but I figured this, along with the other gems, is about all you can handle in a single day.

Seems both purple teams shared that bit of motivation.  Perhaps we should all send LAX a thank you note.
I have thought of needing to do just that many times.  A certain LB was being recruited by both LAX and UWW back in 03.  Let's just say that one dropped the ball big time and the other put on the full court press.  Everything worked out pretty well in the end, I'd say.............. ;) :D ;D
