With the ability level of some of our younger guys I think that we'll be faster next year on both sides of the ball. It's hard to get players like Garcon, Shorts, or even Knapp who seems to have been forgotten in the discussion. I too would like to know how Mt. Union is able to have an absolute monster at WR every year. I heard a rumor that Mt. Union's recruiting area is rather expansive so maybe that has a bigger role in the process than we give it credit for. If UWW wants to send me to Florida to "recruit" I'd be more than happy to oblige  :D

Shorts and Knapp are both NE Ohio guys--and Shorts came here because he wanted to play quarterback--and he wasn't all that happy about switching to WR at first.  And, if you want to see a monster, wait until you get a look at Kyle Miller (6'6", 265 lbs.), our TE who has been lining up as a wide out in the last two games.

Like Shorts, Miller also came to Mount as a QB.

UWW's TE, #89 John Novak (6'5" 278 lbs.) usually only lines up as a TE - wait until you get a look at him!!  ;)  He'll be one of the guys opening up the holes for #33 Levell Coppage (5'8" 180 lbs) & #32 Booker Stanley (5'9" 215 lbs.). Might even catch a pass or two across the middle of the field. Plus, there's another guy named Antwan Anderson, #24, with over 800 yards rushing on the season but hasn't carried the ball for 4 or 5 games.

Update on UWSP's Jared Jenkins, who has drawn attention from 30 of the 32 NFL teams...

http://www.stevenspointjournal.com/article/20101214/SPJ02/12140581/Pointers-Plus-Is-Jenkins-an-NFL-catch-

I only counted 20 of 32 NFL teams in that article.  They said 20 who had sent an area scout. Of those nine sent Midwest region scouts and of those three sent their scouting director/assistant director.  I think that's what they were saying.  It doesn't make sense to think a team would send their director of scouting without sending a local area scout first, does it?

QuoteMiech usually gauges interest from NFL teams based on three categories of team representatives who come visit.

The first are area scouts who rank the lowest on the scouting department totem pole. A total of 20 of those scouts paid Jenkins a visit.

Things start to get serious when Midwest scouts who are officially part of NFL personnel departments check you out. Nine of those scouts came calling to see Jenkins.

When a team sends its scouting director or assistant scouting director to see a college player that franchise is seriously interested in said player. That has been the case for three NFL teams in regards to Jenkins.

Kyle will block too, on the runs, but he's also got great hands and really good speed.  He's really scary when he gets up a head of steam downfield.

A bit off subject, but I thought it is funny, nevertheless. Did you hear of the motorcycle helmet-wearing bandit robbing at gun point the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas of $1.5 million in chips, then exiting the casino and driving away on his motorcycle? The whole time I read the story I was thinking about Oceans Eleven in the scene when Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould) was explaining why no one has ever robbed a Las Vegas strip casino. Hilarious...I guess this criminal never saw the movie.  ;)

WARNING:  DI Post upcoming...

Anyone else find it strange that the recent D1 Football Coach hirings have been done fairly quickly, without the normal interviewing of multiple candidates (especially Black candidates)?

Miami, Florida and even Northern Illinois seem to have skipped over the multiple interview stages.

I'm thinking that the Floyd Keith and the Black Coaches Association may have some issues with this.

I cannot really comment on the issue of not interviewing black coaches, but I have some thoughts on the speed at which the hirings have taken place.

One of the first things is that while it came down to us in the public that Urban Meyer just decided last week, there have been rumblings about that possibility among some of the folks "in the know" such as the staff, select boosters/friends of the program, and even a few in the media.  As is often the case, none of them were talking before it was official becaus Meyer wasn't sure which way he would go.  One of the worst things for a program like Florida would have been to cast more doubt on how long Meyer would have stayed.  One of the worst things for a journalist would have been to break that story too early.  Yes, he may have gotten credit for telling the world, but there's not another coach that would have trusted him again with anything newsworthy.

Also, given what happened with him last year, Florida would have already known who their candidates were.  From the time I lived in Austin, I have a friend in the Athletic Department of University of Texas.  We were talking one day a number of years ago about how they chose Mack Brown and he told me that before there was even an opening, the school has a list of potential "next coaches."  He said that most schools already know who their top candidates are heading into each season, regardless of how long they expect their coach to be around.  I can guarantee you that even though Muschamp had the title of Texas' next head coach, the Longhorns still had a list of people besides him before he was hired by Florida.

There's a couple of reasons for that...1) At that level, there's really only a handful of people who can take fill that position effectively.  It's harder to find someone to run Google than it is to run a chain of grocery stores.  While neither is an easy job, one is a multi-national corporation, the other a regional one.  Though not a perfect relationship, there's corollaries to D-I vs D-III football in there.  And 2) Schools at the top level need to make a fast decision.  Year round, they need to be actively recruiting, or working to keep their recruits, until the day they arrive on campus.  The longer a team is without a head coach, the more doubt creeps into the minds of the high school athletes considering that school.

Anyways, a long response to a short question.  I'm told I can talk too much and say more than is necessary.  I guess it comes with the profession in some ways.

I think those casinos got so wrapped up in watching for the sneaky, clever and brilliant thiefs, they never account for "what would happen if a guy just walked in with a gun?"

You are correct on the numbers you cite, but for clarification on the 30 I gave, that's what the lead says, but it refers to sending scouts to campus/or asking for film...

It does make sense to send an area scout first, I guess. But what do I know?  ;)

What I do want to know is which two teams haven't shown interest so far!  ;)

BP...Interesting stats that you talk about in that post.  Very impressive to answer a score that often.  It would be interesting to see how often Whitewater has responded on the immediately following possession, but when you're talking about scores coming within 3 or 4 minutes, I'm assuming those came on Whitewater's next drive.  Definitely something to keep an eye on for Saturday.

It is part of the same, "refuse to lose," mentality I saw over and over again in 07! Another nice article, BP.

A keen observation.  You pick up on things that most people simply don't.  If I didn't know better I'd say you were raised in a football family. ;)

Interesting item in this article:

QuoteAs a transfer from UW-La Crosse, Brekke is one of 20 players on the roster who have never experienced the national championship game. That is another reason why the Warhawks stay hungry.

"You come here because you want to win," Brekke said. "The main reason we've been in national championship games the last six years is we've got kids who want to work hard and want to be part of this."

I didn't know Brekke came from UW-LAX.  Are there any rules about tranferring between schools and athletic participation in the WIAC, or does an athlete just need a release from his current Coach/school to go to another school?
