Last Friday, he pitched three innings for the River Falls Fighting Fish b.b. team in a 3-2 win over the Eau Claire Bears in EC.

Nice to see the Fighting Fish (really?) finally getting the better of the Bears.  The Bears usually devour the fish!!  ;)

How does the Head Football Coach of a College Program with two daughters at home have time to play in an Amateur Baseball League?  I am an Assistant Football and Head Track Coach at the HS level and my wife would leave me if I joined a recreational league of ANY sport!    ???

badgerwarhawk might be the one to respond to your question Dad. He's in the bowling league. And I know he's discussed a few times previously Mrs. badgerwarhawk's stringent rules regarding his participation!!  ;)

Matt Walker, new Falcon f.b. coach, is also an accomplished baseball pitcher. Last Friday, he pitched three innings for the River Falls Fighting Fish b.b. team in a 3-2 win over the Eau Claire Bears in EC. He struck out 5 allowing 3 hits and one run over 3 innings. It was his first stint on the mound after a previous summer when he had little baseball action. Formerly, he played baseball and football for DePauw U. and coached both sports there.

Too bad RF no longer has baseball as a varsity sport.

Meanwhile, the Falcon softballers won the WIAC league and tournament championships. Maybe success in football is just around the corner?

Is that a semi-pro team or something? If it is, that's cool...good for him.

fredfalcon

It's an amateur team.

At the moment, wife and daughters are still in Indiana, trying to sell a house and finishing school, or at least that's what I think is the situation.

He did it when he was at DePauw. Except he was also the baseball head coach as well.

Heck no!  Just know my "free" time is very limited.  And assume that the Head Coach of a college program would probably have less free time than I do.  Do you think fans/alumni of the program should be concerned that he isn't giving the old "100%" to the program if he has "spare" time to play baseball?  Just food for thought.

Wow, lots of time commitment, that's all I was saying.

Just Bill

I'm having a hard time equating "pitched three innings of baseball in May" to "not giving 100% to his football team". Does he have to watch film every second of his life? Is he permitted to sleep?

I prefer my coaches teach their players to have balance in their lives. I want them to teach their players how to manage their responsibilities so they can be successful athletically, academically and socially. Contrary to what people believe it can all be done, but it takes planning and discipline. That is what I expect my coach to teach.

And if that's what I expect them to teach I also expect them to demonstrate it in their own lives. Show the players that you live what you preach.

Here's the guy I don't want to coach my team: Super-psycho, obsessive-compulsive, control freak, I-do-nothing-but-watch-film-and-stalk-recruits-on-the-internet guy. He'll teach your players that nothing else they do matters as long as they are "100%" committed to football. Hire that guy and you're asking for academic problems, drinking problems, legal trouble, personal issues on your team.

Everyone is allowed some leisure time - some play golf, this guy likes to play baseball.  If he has the time and the support of his family, good for him.  I do see your point, Dad. If it were me, I would rather spend more time with my wife and kids, but to each his own.  Indiana isn't exactly around the corner, either.  My take is that when I'm working, I'm 100%; when I'm "playing," I'm 100%. When I do one, I'm not thinking of the other.
