I just picked up the 2011 USA Today special edition College Football Preview.   It is good to have a writer in Pat Coleman, who actually is fully knowledgeable about  Division III football.   The Division III story headline reads:   Part 7? Wisconsin-Whitewater, Mount Union could vie for title again.  Good read - the magazine is on newstands now.

BTW - Minnesota-Duluth is the pick to repeat as NCAA Division II national champion. What would be the outcome if UMD and UWW would meet on the gridiron this year - who would be the favorite?  Just wondering?!

Pat Coleman

Thanks, Tom, I appreciate it. For what it's worth, and I am *no* expert on Division II, just a hired gun for USA Today in that division and FCS, I think the top Division III teams are clear underdogs against the top 10 Division II teams. I would picture Mount Union or Whitewater battling for fourth or fifth overall in the NSIC or the D-II MIAA, maybe a spot higher in the GLIAC. I'd be disappointed if Whitewater or Mount Union couldn't win a league such as the PSAC or WVIAC.

But that's not an overly informed opinion about Division II football. I don't follow it week-in and week-out at all.

I have been AWOL a lot lately but wanted to wish you gentlemen a belated Happy Father's Day. Hope you all had a great day.   It was also oddly comforting to discover, when I caught up on the last few weeks of postings that, we big, bad public schools should move up to D-2.  Some things just never change.    ;)
And congrats to our Warhawks on the great 6th place finish in the Directors Cup!

Plus karma all around.....

Remember, this sort of thing has basically been taken into account for years, other than 2010. Mount Union, for example, has never had the best SOS among unbeaten teams in the North, but common sense dictates their placement.

This is writing something into the rules to give the committee cover for doing the right and logical thing. Not sure why they didn't do the right and logical thing last year.

Maybe five in a row was just getting a little boring for some members of the Committee, but the 2nd seed just made the Warhawks persevere.   This change is welcome, but proof is always in the implementation. In reality this action is about as close to an apology as the Warhawk nation is going to get.

Or considering Pat's comment about Mount never having the best SOS among unbeatens in the North but still getting the #1 seed year after year while 2010 Warhawks did not receive the same courtesy being given the #2 seed in the 4th region, and going on to make the committee look really silly winning it all, their motivation for this new rule change is more of a late, "cover your ass," kind of move.

Well, in fairness to the football committee, I believe that the strict reading of the criteria was forced on them from above.

Ah, yes, the NCAA.  But that could make the committee look even worse than with my theory of back tracking because it amounts to a big slap on the wrist, doesn't it?   It means the change in criteria wasn't their idea or the result of their self-reflection, wanting to get it right in the future.

The Raiders have tried to schedule the best teams available for their one non-conference game, and the weaker OAC teams, no doubt, have affected the SOS. I will never understand the seeding in 2010, but at least the NCAA realizes that they blew it. Not sure if their position for 2011 is very clear to everyone, however! :-\

I don't get that impression at all. This is wanting to get the selections and seedings right, as always.

1999 (and earlier!) to 2009: They got it done under the previous setup.
2010: NCAA crackdown forced football committee to follow the written criteria and no more.
2011: Football committee adds to its written criteria in order to be able to continue to do business as usual.

You know way more about it than I do, of course, Pat.  This is the first I have heard of the, "Higher Ups,"  forcing the selection committee to do anything differently last year, thus, the confusion by many, as to why the criteria had been suddenly followed so strictly as compared to all the years before.

Kind of neat that Lane Olson - UWW will be on the All-star team playing in Europe this summer with
Coach Larry Kehres as one of the coaches! :)
