Skunks,
I see your point about about Mt. scoring every time Oshkosh scored-no doubt last year Mt was superior.  But in the end Oskkosh put up 28 points- thats twice as many points as any opponent Mt played besides UWW.
I'm not saying Mt won't be superior this year, but I do feel Oshkosh has a better chance this year.  Mt has good receivers, but they don't have Cecil and they don't have Miller- and they certainly didn't demonstrate a dominating run game.
I think Mt's strength this year will be their defense- especially in the secondary.  The pass game is Oshkosh's strength- so we should see strength on strength.  As coach K is calling plays this year, I have to believe he will work on reestablishing the run game.  If it works, then I agree Oshkosh will most likely be in trouble.

Who is the phenom?
Correct me if I'm wrong but Shorts took over for some other WR, right?  Some guy with a french name, I think?    ;)
                                 It's Mount!  They reload.................................... ;D

True, the Raiders do not have C. Shorts and K. Miller this fall, but they will have a "great' defense and "O" line this year. The passing game will still be good and Coach Kehres will see to it that the running games improves.
I like their chances to go real far this year with 18 starters returning! :)

That's pretty much how I see it too.

Took in the team's first practice yesterday.  Nobody was in pads so there was no contact and it's hard to get a solid reading on players.  None the less it was good to see some football.  A junkie getting his fix. :D

So I am checking out the map, planning my trip up to Oshkosh to watch Central open the football season against the Titans September 3.  I always enjoy trips more the more I know about where I am going.  So I have some linguistic questions for you guys.  Does anyone know what Oshkosh, Winnebago, and Winneconne mean in whatever Native American language I presume they come from?  And how about Butte des Morts?  My French was never tres bon but it looks like, hill of dead stuff, to me.  There must be a story there.  And one more thing, on the Google satellite view, is that a sewage treatment plant I see just south of the football field?  And if so does anybody know which way the prevailing winds blow in early September?

Oshkosh is named after Menomoniee Indian Chief Oshkosh. The word Oshkosh means "claw" in Ojibwe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Oshkosh

Winnebago means "wave"

Winneconne means "place of skulls" which came from a battle here in which the Sauks and Foxes fought against the French, Menominees and Chippewas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winneconne_(town),_Wisconsin

Butte des Morts does mean "Hill of the Dead". The lake was named for a massive Native American burial mound found near Menasha. http://host.madison.com/news/local/article_3ebc47a1-7adc-54bc-a68e-9742bf3a5e9e.html

To elaborate on what Just Bill posted about Winnebago

Winnebago - Is what Algonquian Indian tribe called their neighbors. Literally, "Winnebago" means "smelly water." This was not intended as an insult--the Algonquians called them Winnebago Indians because they lived near Lake Winnebago. (Lake Winnebago got this name because it had a strong fish odor in the summer.)

History Question #1 - if Chief Oshkosh was a Menominee Indian, why did his name come from the Ojibwe language? It's a well known fact that the Menominee's have their own language. Or were the Menominee part of the Ojibwe Nation? Is this like the Navajo giving the Apache their name? Just wondering, Just Bill!!   ;D

And, btw, I don't care what his name means, Baron von Raschke will forever be known as the "Claw" to me!!   ;)

Fannosaurus, I don't know the direction of the prevailing winds but I've been to athletic events at UW-Oshkosh in virtually every month of the school year and I've never noticed the sewage treatment plant.  In fact I didn't even know that it was there until you mentioned it.  I don't think it's something you need to concern yourself with.

Thank you.  It must be a nice place if all of those people wanted to fight over it.  I look forward to my visit.  And since you guys are making me wiser in all things Wisconsin, I've had Stevens Point beer and LaCrosse beer, do any other WIAC towns have their names on beer cans?

I guess when it comes to sewage treatment plants, the best ones are the ones you don't know are there.

Bobo,

No clue on the name origins of Chief Oshkosh. I'm only as smart as Wikipedia allows me to be. :)

No...but when you're in-town, make sure pick up some New Glarus. Preferably Spotted Cow.

That's my number one beer of choice. You can only find it in WI.

I have seen spotted cow out in South Dakota... and I mean Beer not the animal
