Sorry but I don't like the Cougar's chances either of the next two weeks 413. Middleton, Verona...it could get pretty ugly.  Though I expect them to finish sub .500 on the season and missing the playoffs I do think they'll get a win in their final game and at least have that to feel better about.

Would you say Stevens Point leads in the race for most surprising start to the season?

Well they are at 2-1, the same record that they were at least year at this point. They just aren't playing anywhere near to the level they have the last 3 years. Relying on Jenkins too much? Didn't they also lose their QB?

With their decline however comes Platteville's rise. I'm silently (and in the pick ems) been rooting for them, and will continue to, except for this coming saturday. Platteville is about to run into something they haven't seen yet this year and won't for the rest of the year.

Surprising mainly due to scoring 25 points in 3 games so far this season, including only 14 against Albion on saturday, a team they torched for 59 last year. The first sentence of the game recap on the Pointers homepage states "The Pointer offense found the end zone twice..." That sounds like, in other words, "even a blind squirrel sometimes finds a acorn...," but they couldn't very well say that, now could they?  On the bright side, you could say the defense has been pretty good. Still, I doubt they're happy with a 2-1 record at this time.

Among the comments from South Dakota & ex-Stout coach Ed Meierkort talking when the game was over in Madison, was this gem:

"You know there's two ways to look at it -- as long as the check clears, it's a win," Meierkort said.

Reportedly, USD collects a $450,000 payday from the game today. He could take some solace in the fact that his team won't be the only one blown out by No. 6 Wisconsin this year.

_______________

Looks like Platteville went with rotating QB's today, with usual starter Nick Anderson coming in a relief role in the Pioneers win vs La Crosse. Eagles also played 2 QB's in the loss. Seems to be more of that going on this year then I can remember. IMO, it's a bad strategy...pick your guy and go with him.
Neither UWL's nor UWP's starting QB practiced much, if any, this week for either team, as both have minor shoulder injuries, so the backups started for both teams...

Predictions for the UWEC-UWRF game?  And do we like the cost saving scheduling decisions of the WIAC....could make for a less exciting non conference season....

I like UWEC this year, they should be able to handle UWRF. However, RF has a really good RB this year in Edwards. It should be a good one.

As far as the cost cutting it has it's pros and cons. Besides saving money, at least these non-conference WIAC games will count as "regional" games. Which will help the WIAC's playoff chances as well as SOS. But it sucks that the players/coaches will get to experience less diversity of playing different programs. For fans, it's nice to see how your team matches up against different teams that you wouldn't normally see. With this scheduling, we'll see less of that.

02  warhawk ..forgive me but I'm new at this.  Could you plea tell me how the in conference regional games benefit the WIAC?  Appreciate your insights

What Pat said....

Plus it's been a few years since the last time UWW had a nonconference in-region game. That is until this year. I rather play La Crosse then another NAIA team.

Anybody else just finish watching the Packers/bears?  I gotta tell you, in all my years of watching football, I don't think I've seen a better trick play than the one the Bears almost succeeded in pulling off on that last Packer punt.  What deception. But, leave it to the bears to screw it up by getting a penalty and getting the easy TD called back (thought I really didn't see the holding that was called). Problem for the bears is that play had 1 chance to work and they messed it up. I doubt it can work again. But, whoever drew it up needs to get a raise!!

I have never seen a team so totally faked out.  They must totally key on Hester. It was a great trick play.

Bleed, you are the man- +K!!  As much as I love the blog, does that mean I have to stop using this site to post my Titan love?
If they look past UWRF for the Eau Claire game, it will be the shortest lived blog ever.

I only heard the game on radio and the GB announcers seem to agree with you on its brilliance.
Being a Bear's fan is really a challenge.  Their offense is as frustrating as hearing how Oshkosh got blown out by Mt.  :D

Correction...UWEC destroyed St. John's 47-19 in week 2 at at St. John's. I also see Wara having a significantly better game against UWW than he had against UMU...his week 2 game against UMU was not up to his par of playing. UWSP seems down this year. I've never been a Stout fan (sorry). UWP seems surprising to me as a contender for top 3 this year. I don't know much about UWEC's team this year to venture a guess.

I wish we would get more posters like you oshfb +K (non-UWW folk). I wouldn't mind reading other people's insights around the WIAC, outside of UWW vs. (insert team here) each week.

Seems like we lose one or two non-UWW posters a year. Whatever happen to Oshdude? BlueDevil Bob (Stout) and PointSpecial (UWSP) gives their two cents every once in a long awhile. There are a couple of UWRF posters that appear every now and then. I think bulk is the only EC poster I've ever seen, then again I'm not 100% sure bulk is a UWEC suppoter. Platteville, I think their SID posts once or twice a year. And I haven't seen a La Crosse post in a LONG time.

Looking at the OAC board, they still get a bunch of non-UMU posters that participate. I just hope the abundance of UWW supporters on here aren't scaring away other WIAC posters.

I'm around... more on the basketball board than this one, but I still lurk.

I just don't have anything meaningful to say.

The problem is that I'm about two generations of players removed from these current teams... So the guys who just graduated went to school with guys that I played with... so with everybody else, there's really no connection.

And I live a state away.  So unless it's cheering on past performances... there isn't much else to add!

Thanks, Emma! I was hoping you'd get a good laugh out of it.  You've got to keep posting your Titan love here, too!!  All WIAC followers need to be continually reminded of the power of the yellow (or do they call yellow "gold" like the Packers do) and black! I'm hoping to head up to Oshkosh October 22nd and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to firmly convince me by then that I am going to watch a "pick 'em game" that will come down to the end.

I can see how being a Bears fan would be particularly frustrating.  They have a good to excellent defense most years and they consistently have superior special teams.  If they even had a reasonably sound and consistent offense, they would be a more consistent Super Bowl threat in the NFC.  I have never been a Martz guy.  I know his offenses have had some stats that are hard to deny, but I still don't think his schemes are sound in either pass protection or in an ability to turn to the running game if the game situation demands it.  I definitely don't like that kind of ball in Chicago.  And that's from a Packers fan who basically hates the Bears!  It's just more fun to hate them when they really seem like the Bears!  ;)

This weeks standings and next week's games are available in WIAC's pick-em's board.

The best part was that there didn't appear to be any holding on the play.  The officials attributed the infraction to a #29 who was not on the field for the play.  There was a #21 on the field but he never touched anyone so he couldn't have been holding.  From all appearances it was perhaps one of the most blown calls of the season.  And it screwed the bear.  No offense intended to any bear fan but I was ROTFLMAO.

I will admit it was a brillant call and I've never seen a team as confused and faked out as the PACKERS punt coverage team was.  It's hard to believe that Matshay was the only PACKER player that had any clue whatsoever where the ball actually was.  When he kicked it I could see that it was angled to the left so I couldn't figure out why the entire coverage team was on the right side of the field.

Never saw the play....I turned the game off early in the 3rd quarter. As a bears fan, that game went about as I expected it to.
