Nix on all the cold Ramer talk! Forecast:  low fifties, sunny, mild south wind. Bring shorts, and look for an upset Falcon win!

Got to give it up to you Fred, while shorts wouldn't have worked too well, the weather was the best I've ever experienced at Ramer. And the Falcons had upset on their minds and played awefully hard. I was impressed.Good things in the future looks to me.

And, River Falls is always one of the coolest towns around, and it was bustling with activity today. Guess the people that run the city know what they are doing.  8-)

Thanks, BDB. At least I was right on the weather. I stopped at a couple of taverns afterward, but could find no football crowd, not even RF people. I take it stoutguy was not among the present.

Fred, stoutguy is a myth around here. Only shows up every once in awhile. Although, he is going into the Stout Hall of Fame with the Distinguished Service Award next weekend. I believe he will show for that.  ;D

You probably know the guy, but I have to say, the PA announcer at River Falls is the best. And if memory serves, he's been doing it awhile.

Wild game in Oshkosh.  With the Titans loss, the WIAC hopes of a 2nd playoff bid ends. It also means that UW-W has clinched a seventh consecutive WIAC championship and undoubtedly the automatic NCAA bid that goes with it.

Congratulations Hawks!

Wild is an apt description. The better team won tonight. I didn't much care for the result, but that was entertaining. The fourth quarter on was like a scripted movie. A bad, schmaltzy movie. The big, bad favorite storms from behind to tie the game and takes back-to-back timeouts to ice the kicker, who misses. Twice – one doinked off the upright, the other blocked on an untimed play. Only one counted, but still. Then the underdog makes a defensive stand in overtime and the favorite's kicker almost falls over trying to kick a field goal. Then the underdog marches down the field once again to win in OT. Good stuff. I mean, bad from where I'm sitting. But my rear end was entertained.

The UWO defense didn't carry over into this week. La Crosse marched up and down the field. The Titans are having a hard time containing mobile quarterbacks.

OshDude -
I got to listen to the game on the radio; I was on the edge of my seat...
It would have been neat to be at that game, seeings you appropriately describe it as a bad, schamltzy movie...  ;) Sort of like a bad Halloween flick...

Did you see the muff punt? Was an Eagle blocked into the reciever, thus causing the fumble? Or did they run into one another, or what?

I didn't realize, or guess I can't remember ever seeing, two time outs in a row, without any time expiring, to ice a kicker... Did the Eagles have to line up, and was the play clock running, when the second one was called? How does that work? Anyone know?

What kind of noise was there in the stadium when he missed both FGs? I can only imagine the Titans fans exhaled a big sigh of relief? Which reaction was audibly louder?

I'll correct the unofficial stats I provided earlier...
Wara had 12 carries for 28 yards...
He was 15-24 for 135 yards passing and 2 TDs...
Looks like the Eagles were able to contain him...

Hertrampf had 31 carries for 186 yards, with 3 TDs for UWL, while Butterfield's totals were 13 carries for 89 yards and a TD... He was 14-27 for 164 yards...

I think 7 consecutive football championships is a conference record. Is that right bp?

I am so disappointed for Oshkosh and the WIAC.  I really wanted two WIAC teams to make it to the playoffs.  This is an example of just how tough this conference is this year.  La Crosse had two wins coming into the game, but played everybody tough. Someone mentioned previously (Bobo?) that La Crosse was the best two win team in the country- I think yes.

Nothing is certain in this conference this year and it makes me appreciate what the Hawks have done all the more.
Sorry for Oshkosh and sorry for the WIAC- the conference is worthy of two playoff teams.

The first time was a collective "Holy %#&@!!" from the crowd, but it was obvious right away that the penalty was going against UWO. Then there was a decent "Block that kick!" chant going, but I doubt anyone thought he was going to miss again. Just nervous energy. Then I thought, "Man, that's a tough angle. If you're setting up a field goal, why did they want it over there?" When the second one was blocked, it was kind of nuts. A mixture of disbelief and a little "What in the world is going on?!" The second reaction was louder. It had a lot of laughter in it. I was thinking that it's just meant to be that UWO will make the playoffs. That thought was incorrect.

The number that stuck out to me, and the one that didn't surprise me when I got home was LAX's 28 first downs.

It's not that rare for the defense to call 2 consecutive timeouts to "ice" the FG kicker when the offense is lining up for what could be a game ending FG attempt., especially with :03 on the clock. On a kick that is very short with an extreme angle (I'm not sure if the ball in this case was placed on a hash mark or between), the defense should take as much time as they can to let the kicker think about the kick. No need to end the game with a timeout in your pocket.  There is no set time to call the timeout, but (obviously) it must be called prior to the ball being snapped. Usually, the defense will wait until the official has started the play clock as the kicker is going through his final pre-kick routine. Following the first timeout, the game clock (not the play clock) won't re-start until the ball has been snapped, so no game time will expire.  (IMO) Hitting the upright with the first kick must have been playing on the kickers mind before taking the second one. I'm sure he's very grateful that his teammates were able to pull out the victory, but that can't be a time that being a kicker is much fun.

Yes, LaCrosse won 6: 1949 through 1954.
