If espn was coming to St. Thomas for a game and I was still a student, I could not imagine a situation where I wasn't drunk and in (or near) the first row of the student section.  Christ, UWW is a public school, its not like the kids will be studying for finals or anything!  ;D

This is just like the week before NCC last year for me.  We all knew NCC was the team knocking on the "purple power" door and the week was filled with uncertainty.  So here we are again.  We've all known St. Thomas has been knocking at the door.

On another note, does anybody know if the UWW administration does anything in particular to encourage attendance at the games?  With ESPN coming I can't imagine they wouldn't want a big crowd for obvious reasons.  If it were up to me, I'd make sure every professor read a bulletin to every class every day of the week encouraging attendance at the game. I'd make sure every dining hall and the common areas in the student union had "ESPN is Coming to Town" posters.   Heck, I'd put fliers on car windshields and send updates through the university email system.  I'm rambling, but you get the point.

How about they give away tickets to students? That should guarantee a big turnout, right?   ::)    ;D

Bench- are you traveling to UWW for the game?  There are few of us considering making the trip.

If only I lived in the Cities, these things would be automatic. Unfortunately, I'm at an awful crossroads in my life where I'm expected at future in-laws for pre-Christmas as we will not be there for actual Christmas. Grandparents have finally decided that hosting Christmas is overrated and are also begging for one last family get together before they head to Arizona. Plus, saving for a wedding, paying off an engagement ring, clients keep wanting to get out of jail for some reason so I have to talk to them.

USTBench is officially stretched too thin and what was once priority number 1, is now fallen to 2, maybe 3. AT THE WORST TIME EVER.

That said, all of my UST gridiron equity is geared towards our annual showdown with SJU and, if the impossible happens, a Stagg Bowl. Thus, I will be finding a way out of the haze of Newports and fog of Milwaukee Best Light breath that can only exist at my future in-laws, and I will make my way to a bar in Brainerd and beg them to turn on ESPN3, where I will shudder at the apathy of the commentators ESPN is "punishing" by sending to Whitewater, whilst checking D3Football on my Droid every two seconds.

I need to move to the Cities. Sigh.

ROR, I can't wait to be an empty nester and I don't even have kids yet.

Brainerd is one of my favorite town's, partially because it is only an hour away from Leech Lake, where I have visited (parents own a cabin) every year for my entire life.   USTBench, enjoy this time of your life, from here it does not dramatically improve until your kids pick a college and you get to fall in love with college sports all over again!

I agree with you completely, I feel exactly like I did before the NCC game last year.  Apprehensive, excited, worried, all of the above!

UWW has had FREE TICKETS for each of the playoff games.  For the students, watching the game on TV down at the Coyote is easier.  Since the gametime temp is expected to be around 30 degrees - my marketing slogan this week has been BE COOL, PLAN ON PARTYING AT THE PERK SATURDAY AFTERNOON!

Lord knows St. Thomas will be bringing a boatload of fans down from the Twin Cities.

Bench, I'd prefer to not be an empty nester at this point.  Looking forward to having all 4 kids back in the house over Christmas.

Well said Warhawk Dad.....I remember the feeling when my son was playing.....and it wasn't fun between games.....I found at least 3 or 4 bloody marys helped on gameday but never had a cure for the days in between games.....all I did was worry. Good luck making it through this week. I will say that the 5 years my family followed UWW around the country was the most fun I ever had for an extended period of time.....so enjoy it wh0ile you can and I hope it takes you to Virginia next week.....Pound the Rock.....

We thoroughly enjoyed each and everyweek for the first two years and now in the third.  I will say that the enjoyment and the stress increases when your son becomes a starter.   We have enjoyed traveling and checking out the local microbrews and meeting people from the different teams we have played and knock on wood, hope we play in Salem a week from this Friday!  Pound the Rock!

I hear ya!  But, on the other hand, it is so nice when they leave!

My nineteen-year-old has not yet left - in some ways I truly enjoy it; in others, I feel like 'what the hell is keeping you here!' 8-)

(Geez, I'm sounding like my folks, who really look forward to visits from kids, grandkids, and now great-grandkids, but no doubt audibly sigh with relief when the house is back to normal!)

BoBo, not sure what would prompt that post, but since WarhawkDad and I are in the same age bracket, I would agree with him, but I am not much of a fan of checkers or rock, paper, scissors.  Now if we are going to have some real good micro brew beer for the drinking part I am in.  As far as the steel cage match would go, I am not sure if that would be fair since I do not know Warhawkdad's wrestling experience, but I am a wrestling coach.  Since I will be at the Stagg Bowl no matter what, I would be glad to share a good beer with WarhawkDad if he will be there, and you too if you are there.  I dont have issues with the UWW people just differ on opinion at times.

Good post! +K, we are very similar in more than just age!

If you are coming to the game, pick up some Spotted Cow (or any other beer brewed by New Glarus) which is some of the best small brewery beer I have ever had.  Also, feel free to stop by our tailgate.

WarhawkDad

WarhawkDad, thanks for the suggestion for beer by New Glarus.  We happen to have a beer garden near us that carries over 800 types as of last count.  If they dont have it, they will try to get it if you ask them.  I am a huge fan of micro brews and if you are at the Stagg I will be bringing a couple of growlers from my local brew pub to the tailgate.  I will be hanging with the Stone Station folk so I will be easy to find since I will be the only one wearing a Wesley jersey, well that is unless they beat mount, then I may be a little harder to find.  there will be plenty of time for the tailgating since the game is in the evening I will be glad to travel around and find you to say hi.  Good luck this week and heres to you with a nice micro brew.  Cheers.  +1 to you for the beer suggestion.

Another thing in common.  I wrestled in high school, love the sport.  My cousin was a 3 time Missouri Champ then went to Lehigh and blew out a shoulder and a knee.  My son wrestled as well and went to State and placed in the top 8.   If we are fortunate enough to make it to Salem I will definitely look you up!  (I tried to +K you one and I can't yet because I gave you one in the last 24 hours already... ;) )

New Glarus distributes their beer exclusively in Wisconsin, so you won't be able to get it outside the state.  In my opinion, it's the biggest positive about moving to Wisconsin.

Congrats on the family wrestling thing.  It does get in your blood, I was not that good, but when the chance came to coach my middle school team I jumped at it.  Nothing better than taking kids who have no clue with no experience and trying to get them to like the sport.  We are a mostly minority school, so many do not even know what the sport is let alone have any idea what it is about.  Team wins are virtually impossible, but seeing a kid get his first win or even finally not get pinned is well worth it.  Good luck this weekend.
