Here's a Monday surprise...

RT @bgraff_waow: john miech steps down as uwsp football head coach.  he won a school record 156 games in 24 seasons.
Wow, that is a surprise, at least to me.

Congrats on the family wrestling thing.  It does get in your blood, I was not that good, but when the chance came to coach my middle school team I jumped at it.  Nothing better than taking kids who have no clue with no experience and trying to get them to like the sport.  We are a mostly minority school, so many do not even know what the sport is let alone have any idea what it is about.  Team wins are virtually impossible, but seeing a kid get his first win or even finally not get pinned is well worth it.  Good luck this weekend.

WesleyDad, Now if we can just find something in common between you and Bobo this would be the friendliest board of all.

Wrestling- it has to be one of the best confidence building sports there is.  I never did it competitively, but did work out with the wrestling team in high school- nothing better for the ego then to get pinned regularly by 140 pounders.
Locally we are always trying to push kids toward wrestling, I am amazed how many of them come back to the same objection- the uniform.  I'm sure that's just an easy out for many, but it sure is a common objection.

emma17, yep that is the common objection.  tough sell but I would agree it is usually an easy out for many.

Our high school wrestling coach talked to me all the time about wrestling. He was one of our assistant football coaches. He tried to tell me a 5'11" kid who couldn't jump or shoot didn't have a future in basketball.  I didn't mind the uniforms. But I saw the wrestlers working out and practicing.  It just looked like WAY too much work!  ;)

Oh, turns out he was right about the whole basketball thing.  ::)

Emma, there is a difference in embarassment about getting pinned by 140-pounders:

were you a 110 pounder or a 170 pounder? ;D

(Me?  I was a chubby 140 pounder in hs who was pinned by 120 pounders (in gym class; I never wrestled competitively).  In college, I didn't wrestle, directly, but as a 120 pound runner could 'leg-wrestle' (and beat) 200 pound fb players. 8-)  Pretty much the height of my athletic 'career'! :P)

#33 wrestled all four years, state qualifier his senior year. I use to say that if you sucked at basketball, you just sat the bench but if you sucked at wrestling, you'd get the crap kicked out of you.  I remember a few boys who tried so hard, never quit but every match was just brutal to watch, especially if they were good enough to put off the pin for a few periods but couldn't stop from having their heads smashed into the mat for most of the match.    ;)

He says he plans to stay on and teach until the end of the academic year before pursuing other football opportunities. I also wonder what it means for his wife Sheila the very successful women's soccer coach.

One more year and he would have been the third winningest coach in WIAC history.

Hmm, seeing as how nobody on this board would know any better- I was 110 pounds.
Not, I was 190-ish.  In my lame defense, our high school was one of the best in the state so I was probably wrestling state champions  :-[

Interesting game.  I recorded the Mt vs Wabash game that aired this morning.  Wabash's middle linebacker very much like #40 from NCC last year- not quite the sideline to sideline speed but one heck of a linebacker.

Watching Wabash's first half offense leaves me in complete shock that NCC lost to them.  Maybe 2nd half will show more.

That's my excuse too! 8-)

Since we all have a tendency to exaggerate our early exploits, good to see an honest man!  +k

(I sometimes tell the story of blocking the shot of a 6'8" opponent [I'm 5'8"] without bothering to include that in my race downcourt [ignoring a teammate under the basket] I blew the layup. :P  Or tell of the night, playing 1-on-1, that I scored 34 [in church league bball] against a starter on my hs team, forgetting to mention that he scored 50+. :-[  You're a better man than I. ;D)

Congratulations Coach Sulages and all the players recognized for All-West Region honors.  That's one thing the coaches in Saturday's semi-final game have never managed to win. Coach Johnson from Bethel has won it twice since '07.

From the rumblings I heard around the university is he was forced out by the new AD.
