I think it's unrealistic to expect we'll get another back who'll break Coppage's rushing records the way that Coppage broke Beaver's records.  It was incredible that we got two backs like these guys back to back to begin with.  But I really don't worry about the running back position for a couple of reasons.  #1 and foremost is the offensive line.  We've got a solid, experienced group returning and we've got good position coaches working with them.  They'll be decent again next year.  #2 is our history of producing running backs.  Admittedly Beaver and Coppage were above the norm but the fact is that we pretty much always have a solid running game.  I can't remember the last team we've fielded that didn't.  Put the group of running backs returning with the offensive line and we should be able to run the ball.

Good point BW.  Coppage got 20 extra games (the kid played in 4 Stagg Bowls- wow) and that will make it tough on anyone following his footsteps to break a yardage record.
I am very confident though that UWW will find a back/backs, or maybe even change the formation or types of plays that will lead to another great yardage producer.

Oh, and let me be the first to wish all my PP posse a very Merry Christmas and prosperous, safe, and joyous New Year. My wife just finished packing our bags, my daughter's last day before winter break was yesterday (wednesday) and our flight to our little island paradise is later this AM (thursday). Time for a couple hours of shut-eye. We'll be gone for about a month. I hope everyone's been real good and Santa brings you something nice...enjoy!!  :)  Can't wait for my first mango mai tai on the beach...life doesn't get any better than this!!

Merry Christmas to all and to all, a good night!!

Back atcha, Bo.  Merry Christmas, and Safe travels.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

Merry Christmas to all on the WIAC board. It's been a fun year (more for some than for others) Safe travel to BoBo and all others venturing out over the holidays. See you next year.

In watching Minnett, he was almost unblockable at times.  Mount would try to double him, and the second lineman wouldn't even get back in time to get a hat on him.  The dude has one WICKED spin move.

To be honest, I think the constant #1 factor that allowed UWW to win the game was that voodoo priest that is their punter.   He was beyond fabulous in the biggest game of the year.  Mount's punter was.....ummm.......well.....I guess on the positive side at least he didn't have one blocked.  He has been very up and down all year.

It will be interesting to see how UWW reloads in the offensive backfield.  Mount has suffered the last two years without a dominant RB.  I think Murray filled that role this year, and should have a monster senior season.  He has finally learned to finish runs.

I agree with you on that...he was amazing.

I think all of us UWW fans are anxious to see how UWW's backfield will be 2012. That might be the single biggest area of concern for next year's team. Who knows, maybe a true freshman will appear like Coppage did when Beaver graduated. Wishfull thinking, I know.  :)

02 I know you said anxious and not worried.  But just in case some may be worried, I'm going to go Bleedpurple here and say I'm not worried at all about running back for UWW.  Now that #33 is gone, IMO there WILL be freshman that come in that may not have before.  There are a couple kids on the roster now (or were) that wouldn't surprise me if they blossomed.

Maybe Pirtle will return to UWW next season...or better yet...maybe he'll transfer to play for the Titans  ;D

Nice to see Andy Moriarty make the list as a former Titan RB. Surprised Jeremy Unuertl, a pretty good DB for La Crosse in the late 90's/early 2000s, was not on the list. I know he also played many seasons in the IFL as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Unertl

Congrats, 17

BW- Thanks but unfortunately I can take no credit and must clear any confusion.  There was already one of me when I arrived at the Dub in 1983- so he got to keep the name, plus he was pretty darn good.  I mentioned him before in a running back discussion.  In my time knowing UWW, he was the first to start the tradition of great backs.  Actually, like with Justin Beaver, people wondered if his records would be broken- and then the next guy in line was George Rainey, and it just went on and up from there.

However, I have the orginal list up on my blog incase anyone wants to still try to find it.

No cheating, by comparing the two lists....you'll only be cheating yourself. :)

I didn't know Bill Schroeder only played one year for LaCrosse.  Did he have a phenomenal year or did he make the list based on his NFL success?

badgerwarhawk

Schroeder is barely mentioned in the LaCrosse record book.  He did have 3 touchdown catches in a single game and 6 in a season both of which ranked in the middle of the pack listed in their records.  I tend to think it was his NFL career that has him on the list.  Of course had a played four years for the Eagles he may have made it on his collegiate career.

I think a lot of fans were expecting or hoping that Coppage would break through the line of defenders Mount had in the box at least a couple of times like he did last year for some big yardage. Maybe the coaching staff did too. It had usually worked that way for most of his career. Coppage for 3, 4, or 5 yards, then boom....there he goes for 40 or 50 or more.  Again, all the credit to Mount for not letting that happen again this year.
Levell got hurt on the first series of plays.  He came over to the sideline, got taped and went back in.  He was retaped a little later on that half and again at half time.   He did not have the ability to plant and cut off that foot.   He was courageous to continue playing and a Coppage at 50% is better than most at 100% especially since he rarely puts the ball on the carpet.

That helps to explain why B. Stanford was in at RB on the play Blanchard threw the EZ INT. I recall thinking to myself that it was quite early to see him in on offense. As far as I remember, this was never explained on the audio broadcast, though I might have missed it when I stepped away from my computer for a second. Might also help to explain some of the conservative play calling for the remainder of the game.
Well, yes and no.  If your RB is not up to full speed, it makes having him put the team on his back almost the entire game all the more dangerous. A big, kudos to Levell, way to tape it up and go, my kind of player.  Don't get me wrong, I fully understand the benefit of winning the time of possession battle and ball security that comes with a run game.  I was all about the run until I witnessed, first hand the last seven years, that the teams that do both well are the ones still playing football the 3rd week in December.  Who said, "when you pass the ball, three things can happen and two are not good?"  My main beef was with the last series and when we desperately needed a first down or two to put the game away.  Not talking about a bomb, here, just a few more dink and dunks to mix it up, keep the defense guessing and I certainly would have trusted my QB who had only thrown 4 picks all year to make good judgement about what was open.  Giving the ball back to a desperate Mount team and LK with 2 minutes left and a chance to tie or win?  Well, how many times does that go the way you want it to?  But hey, it did this time, we won....................it worked.  Thanks to DEFENSE!  Can't say that enough! (Going to be like a dog with a bone.)      ;D    8-)
Well now that you mention of it, several of us where disappointed in the play calling in the last series.    We were looking for a pass in the flat to Tamsett or a pass to Jay Ford or a bubble screen.  With the end result being a W, it made me less concerned because I was too busy celebrating!   ;D 8-) ;D

I would hope so!! I wouldn't change ONE SINGLE play. Not one. If we change one play to a pass and it turns into a Mount defensive TD, we lose.  Now maybe the chances of that is .01%. I'll take the 100% chance of the Championship we now possess.  "Should haves and could haves" have zero merit when the result is in and your team won. The result can't be any better than the one that occurred. is the ultimate antidote for second guesses!  ;)
You are such a party pooper!  Just having a little fun here discussing the game.  It is officially the off-season, BP, and I, for one, am trying to ease the withdrawal symptoms......................... ;) :D ;D

I was just joining in! what fun is a discussion without other points of view!!  ;)

As many excellent QB's as UW-W has had over this Stagg Bowl run since 2005, it's interesting to think that IF (yes, I said IF, not taking anything for granted here...), IF UW-W were to win the Stagg Bowl next year, Lee Brekke has a chance to be the only UW-W QB to win 2 Stagg Bowls.
