Got this from a family friend that lives up in the UP, seems like we got a yooper headed down to the land of the cheese heads!

Per the Iron Mountain Daily News:

"Norway's Brady Grayvold has left Northern Michigan University for Division 3 football juggernaut UW-Whitewater. Grayvold, along with two of his NMU teammates, will be immediately eligible to play.

The decision came after a "very good meeting" with Whitewater head coach Lance Leipold and defensive coordinator Brian Borland.

"Brady was offered the full-time punting duties at NMU but this is a better fit for him in his pursuit of playing defensive back, as well as punting, and competing for a national championship," explained his father, former Norway High School head football coach Brad Grayvold. "Their facilities are outstanding and their fan support is as well."

Brady Grayvold was a standout in this April's NMU spring game, picking off a tipped pass and doing double duty as a punter and kicker.

Whitewater, a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conferrence, sports some impressive feats including three consecutive national titles ..."

Thanks for sharing. Does anyone recall when UWW last had a punter/kicker that was also a first or second string position player?

Chad Wurth was our RB and Kicker when I was there.

He was damn good at both positions:
6th leading rusher in WIAC history
10th most FG made in WIAC history

If my memory serves me Matt Turk was a starting tight end and punter in the late 80's early 90's.

These are some of the "drop-ins" that I was referring to several months ago.  I had heard from some players who toured them around the facilities.  Along with the young man mentioned above there is an offensive lineman that could see some playing time as well.

This isn't a football story but a story on the continuing excellence of UW-Whitewater athletes "across the board."

Posted earlier this evening on Facebook....  BREAKING: UW-Whitewater alumnus Dan Hytinen advances to finals of Olympic Trials in discus. #Olympics #Discus

In 2008 Dan was the National Division III Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Just doing some quick research, looks like he was an Honorable Mention All State punter/kicker and an all UP/Conference DB, which bring my next question,

what's the immediate need for a DB/Punter? With WW returning 2 Senior DB's, any lack of depth?

UWW recently graduated punter Kris Rosholt, so anyway you slice it, a new punter will be taking over in the fall - there is a need there.  DB's are strong - badgerwarhawk, do you know if McCollum will be returning this year from his injury or did he decided to hang it up? As with any season, you can never have enough DB's, the way I see things. I never liked having a kicking specialist as a position player, too - and especially on a team like UWW, I don't know why they would need to do that. Let the punter punt and the DB play DB.

He came out of the prelim's in 9th place, just under 5m shy of the leader. So, unless they start from zero in the finals, he's got his work cut out. But, in track and field, it seems, anything can happen, right Dan O'Brien?

Totally agree and the reason is obvious.  One injury eguals two big problems.

At last report McCollum was returning.

I'm with you BoBo.  You can't have enough defensive backs.  There were 12 or 13 underclassmen on the roster last year.  Some who are returning like Ryan Wenkman, Chris Pendergast, Andrew Keister, Ronnie Blaszkowski and Noah Timm saw playing time.  Also returning after having sat out last year due to injury is Aaron Samplawski.

Good news about McCollum.  His game in the 2010 Stagg was about as good as I've seen from a D3 DB in a long time (Mount currently has a pretty good one, but that also includes that DB from Albion in the NFL draft this year. I think any DB coming in, even the transfer from DII, is going to have plenty of competition to work his way through. As Warhawk09 says, UWW may have 2 returning starters in theory, but they have at least 5 guys you listed that know the stress of playing in the significant portion of important games vs the upper echelon of D3 schools. Anyone coming in is going to find the going tough - and if they can break into the rotation, we know they have talent.

All this talk is getting me pumped up for the season to begin...hoo-ha!!

Our secondary should be very solid this year. I'm also very excited about our LBs. Klotz, Wismer, Cortez, Williams (who was injured last season) and Borland should be wreak havoc on offenses this year.

If our D-line can overcome some key losses then our defense should be lights out.

Can't wait!

Secondary and linebacking is strong for sure.
I'm very interested to see if Mr Williams will return.

On another note- UWW looks to be adding former Stevens Point head coach to the staff as receiver's coach. Nice.
