Quote from: DoubleO on August 06, 2012, 02:21:26 PMWhat about Evan (Edgar) Wright? He had an oustanding IL prep career at Fremd HS in Palatine and I thought he had been seeing some carries the last couple of seasons. Does he factor into the mix at RB?
Double O- I've kept an eye out for Evan- he simply has struggled to crack the lineup. Having watched him play in high school- I get the feeling his style doesn't fit perfectly with the UWW system.
I remember talking to Antwan Anderson during his senior season at UWW. AA was out of Madison Memorial HS and was a freshman in 2007 when Justin Beaver was a senior. I remember AA telling me that he had high hopes of being the Hawks "lead" tailback his sophomore season. Oops, a freshman named Levell Coppage showed up in 2008. Not getting the No. 1 tailback spot sure didn't hurt AA's effort on the field. AA was perhaps the No. 1 "backup" tailback in UWW history finishing his career with 2626 yards and 28 touchdowns. What made AA even more special was his effort as a special teams (kick and punt coverage) player. His effort with ball, or without ball, made the Hawks better. UWW's young running backs should be required to watch film of AA

Well said Voice- and here's something to keep 02's and Bobo's eyes rolling. As stated before- IMO if AA is premier back in 2008 Stagg the outcome is likely different.

5. Oshkosh's year to knock off Whitewater?
---------------------------------------------------------
Déjà vu all over again...

...I'm sorry, but some of you guys come up with this one every year.  :o This has become so cliché.

Of course, the law of averages will eventually turn in your favor - it's just that the whole idea has lost it's luster.

Bobo I'm not sure what has lost its luster- that some WIAC team will beat UWW or that Oshkosh will beat UWW?  Obviously the predictions of a strong Oshkosh last year were dead on, so I don't think you are talking about Oshkosh. As for picking who will be the WIAC team that beats UWW- my guess is IF it happens in 2012 it would likely be UWP or UWL.
I hope none do.

I'm interested to hear you state your case for UWL...but I agree with you on UWP.

UWL does have a good amount of All-WIAC players returning, including the top returning RB in the conference. They have a lot of work to do coming off a three win season.

I think it was emma that lead the Oshkosh parade last year. And I was one of the many that rolled my eyes at him. But I'll tell you.....I quickly became a believer after attending that UWO/UWW game in Oshkosh last year. With the star power that UWO has returning, they can make another strong run at the warhawks. I think either UWO or UWP has the best chance to put an end to UWW's streak this regular season.

I appreciate the feedback....and you're right it has become a cliche on when UWW will lose again, and it has lost some luster. But I'm just trying to keep an open mind on when uww comes back down to earth.

I think you need to check who they lost and who they have returning because, IMO, they lost a lot more than you think:

Other than Wara, who is the star power?

They are returning six All-WIAC players from last season, including the best player in the WIAC this year (Nate Wara), imo. Only two other programs in the WIAC are returning more than Oshkosh (UWW and UWP). You're right they are losing a good chunk of last year's team...but so is Whitewater. But UWW can prove they can reload, where as UWO hasn't shown that yet.

Of course I believe UWW will win that game. It certainly does give us a huge advantage that the game is at the Perk this season. I was just throwing the possibility out there. I know for certain I'm not the only Warhawk fan that's worried about this game.

Actually the more I think about it, the UWP game for Whitewater might be just as tough. If not tougher.

Thanks bobo, this is good stuff...I appreciate the discussion.

We have arrived.  You know the season is rapidly approaching when 02Warhawk starts his "worrying"!   ;D 8-) ;D  For one, I am adopting the UWW, one practice at a time and one game at a time mentality, improving with each game. I expect my tailgating to improve with each trip to the parking lot and through the help of all my teamates and coaches, I am lookin forward to a wonderful season!   8-) 8-)
I expect to not lose a step from my 2011 season top form when it comes to my tailgating talent at the home opener.  In fact, I will be warming up with a pre-season outing at the Bears game on the 18th with the family of a certain rookie Bears QB who actually bleeds purple.   ;) :)

I'm jealous

That'll be great if Matt can receive a bunch of playing time.

Reasons for UWL:
#1- They are UWL and their history/tradition means something.  2nd year Coach Dettwiler has another year of his way under his belt- and that will only move the program forward.
#2- They had a fantastic 3-7 year last year.  Played UWW tough both times, MHB tough and beat the Titan (that still stings).
#3- Before playing UWW this year, they will play North Central, Oshkosh 2x's and UWP- they will be a seasoned team.
#4- Don't forget they have the "greatest DIII football commercial ever" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks8MZ1CEDtI&feature=relmfu

I guess I'm just content on enjoying the streak while it lasts rather than announcing publicly who I think is going to be the first to defeat them (or have the best chance). Making yearly predictions exempts the predictor from critique?  ;)

Plus it looks like it's official. John Miech is now a Warhawk coach. Unreal...

A little added incentive for the Pointers?

BTW, a while back I mentioned I saw helmet logo design of a dog that reminded me of the new Pointer helmet logo.  Good news, I found it...bad news, it's not quite the same:

Loyola College Prep Flyers, Shreveport, LA

This logo follows the Just Bill train of thought:

I'm glad they aren't totally getting rid of the Stevie Pointer character. He's cute, the kids love him and not everything about sports needs to be mean and fierce every second.

No problem at all, I'm glad you're enjoying it.

So it looks like you believe LaCrosse will turn the corner this year after some close defeats last year. I suppose it's possible, but their schedule won't be doing them any favors.....that's for sure: Five of first six games are on the road. They only get four home games. They don't have their shutdown all-american corner from last season. As I stated in my blog, they could very well start the year 0-6...and have "fantastic 3-7 year", again.

But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

They also lost to River Falls. If 3-7 was "fantastic," how would you rate 4-6 ?

Northern Michigan, Stevens Point, Eau Claire, Stout and River Falls, too. My guess is that they will be well seasoned, if not toasted by the time they play WW the last game of the regular season(ed).

Bobo I never said you shouldn't critique- that would be like telling you to stop breathing- and you're too much fun to lose.

With UWL- my take on it is every coach wants/needs something to build on for the upcoming season. For a first year coach of a rebuilding team like UWL, playing UWW, UWO and MHB (3 top 20 teams at one point) as tough as they did is exactly that "something" to build on for 2012.  UWL comes into this season not wondering IF they can compete in the WIAC- I'd venture to say their mindset is "we can play with the best of D3." Like Fire Marshall Bill used to say "that could be dangerous.

Although I am a UWW guy- last I checked this is still a WIAC site- which seems the perfect place to discuss the strengths of the conference and who might have the best shot at the reigning champ.
