Just got home after watching UWW scrimmage Rockford College at the Perk.

The scrimmage started slow but picked up the pace quickly. The defense looked pretty strong forcing four turnovers in the first half-hour of action. My two defensive hits of the game: Loussaint Minett blew up a Rockford reverse in the backfield early in the scrimmage.  Ryan Wenkman had perhaps the hit of the day – a decleater along the sideline against a Rockford running back.

On offense, Lee Brekke showed experience and poise in the pocket.  As far as the tailback spot is concerned...

Dez Ward is the lone returnee from last year.  The rotation Friday included Ward along with Ryan Givens (transfer from Illinois State), Richard Holder (transfer from Concordia-St. Paul) along with freshmen Josh Williams (Downers Grove South, IL), Nick Patterson (Sussex Hamilton), Dennis Moore (Elgin, IL) and Jordan Ratliffe (Milwaukee Vincent). It will be interesting to see what the rotation will be for the Warhawks' season opener in St. Louis vs. Washington University on Friday, August 31.

WOW - A scrimmage between the two-time defending national champs against a team that was two-time 0-10! 8-)

How does THAT big a mismatch help either team?

(I realize it was geographically convenient, but come on!)

It has nothing to do with geography Ypsi.  The problem is similar to our scheduling problem that is no one else will scrimmage us.  At one point in the recent past we had a deal worked out with Elmhurst but after they came up here once they didn't want to continue.  We've scrimmaged a pair of JC's the past few years, Harper and DuPage, and other times we scrimmaged ourselves.  If you could persuade IWU to scrimmage us I'm fairly certain our staff would be interested.  With the exception of another WIAC program we're willing to scrimmage anyone else who is interested.  The problem is finding someone who is.

I have zero contacts at IWU (I DID meet Coach Eash one time for a minute or so ;)) and that's a pretty long haul for a mere scrimmage.  I CAN understand teams hoping for a Pool C 'ducking' you for a real game (NCC lost out on a Pool C a few years ago due to an upset loss against an OAC team- ONU?) in their first game; they went 8-2 and were ranked top 10, but no dice), but would think they'd welcome you for a scrimmage.  Do you know if UWW has contacted NCC?  Wheaton seems to have a permanent scrimmage date with Wabash, but they might also be a possibility.

UWP got some new color combos

http://letsgopioneers.com/sports/fball/Uniforms.jpg

Personally I like the all orange combo.

They need a blue helmet to complete the set.  As it is with 10 different combo's, do you think they wear a different combination for each of their 10 regular season games?

Since Harper JC has discontinued football (as of this year), they are excused. Do you know if WR Robert Douglas (Beloit/Memorial) from Harper is in camp? Report?  He was also a 2-time national champion in the hurdles for Harper.  Do you know if he'll run track for the Warhawks, as well?

My bad - thought you were just going for the threepeat. 8-)  Make that a 45-0 team the last three years vs. a 1-29 team! :P

BoBo,
Robert Douglas IS in camp. As expected he  is very fast. Coming from the junior college level he has a learning curve to adjust to. He has caught my eye several times during the first week of camp. I do not know if he plans on joining the track team. I'll get an answer and pass it along.

Does this mean that Edgar Wright is no long with the team? Is he still in school, or will he transfer and try to play elsewhere?  Do you have any other information about players transferring out of the program and where they might be going?

I see where former Warhawk RB from 2 years ago Levi Johnson (River Falls) is on the Dubuque roster. It lists him as a Soph - he must've sat out a year. I think he played in 3 games early in that season - 5 carries 11 yards.

It has been rather refreshing that La Crosse fans are getting excited over Eagle football.
LAX Tribune published a story today on the Eagles first day of practice yesterday...

UWL is still trying to get back to the top for the first time since early in 2007 WIAC season.

La Crosse hasn't recovered since blowing an 18 point, 4th quarter lead in Whitewater's dramatic comeback win in La Crosse on September 27, 2007.  The game has become known as the COMEBACK. If you want to relive the highlights of that game simply click on the following link:

Edgar got hurt in camp. They had moved him to a fullback prior to the injury.

My comments having watched the scrimmage are very similar to yours.  What I was most impressed with was the overall depth.  We are solid 2 deep at qb, very impressed with Behrendts, we are solid 2-3 deep at running back.  Dez looked good, Givens looked great.  The line looked very good and the seconds looked good too.  Tamsett is a beast at fullback and continues to make good catches out of the backfield.  Serdak hurt an ankle during the scrimmage, but Davis has great hands.  He will continue to improve on blocking.   At wide receiver both Huber and Morris looked very good.  Have some depth there as well.  Howard is supposed to be back at the season.

Defense has tremendous depth at all positions   Hopefully the little nicks and bruises that some have will heal prior to the season.

The only position I am uncertain about is punter, because I did not see a UWW punt at the scrimmage.

Looking forward to St. Louis.  Heading down that Friday a.m.   :D ;D 8-)

Like any school, probably various reasons, but for sure some transfer to increase their chances for more playing time.
