Watched the 2012 Stagg Bowl I have saved on the DVR over the weekend to get ready for the game on Friday. Can't wait for the season to start!

The one stagg bowl I didn't record. I took it for granted the NCAA would put out a DVD of it...of course they didn't last year.  :'(

By my count, the 2012 UW-W roster shows: 48 freshmen, 17 sophomores, 16 juniors, 19 seniors.

It will be interesting to see the breakdown of the travel roster.

Thanks for this message Bleed, I didn't realize the roster was posted.  Were you impressed with the number and size of the freshman class?  I am impressed with the physical size of some of the freshman lineman and receivers.

I haven't checked yet, but I wonder how many players from last year's roster didn't make the squad.

I was struck by the physical size of some of the freshmen as well.  There are several really good sized linebackers in this class too.  They will get nothing but stronger and faster once they spend some time in the program.

I didn't check last year's roster either.  My guess is that a number of  freshmen on last year's roster will disappear from the roster this year.  Some will likely grey shirt and some will likely move on or stop playing football.  Sophomore year can be tough on a kid.  Some simply have to get a little bigger and stronger to compete with the upper classmen. Those that stay committed and press through might be able to be on the roster as 3rd year sophomores next year.

I believe it's impossible to tell from the roster just how many players from last year's roster didn't make the squad because we don't know how many undergraduates left school following last season or decided not to continue playing this year (like Jaren Borland) and were never in camp.

That said, by my count, there are 42 underclassmen from last years roster not on this years roster - that's not including the graduated!! Most of the names we wouldn't recognize, as they really had little or no playing time last year. However, there are 2 major ones, in addition to Borland & 3 others with considerable playing time. They are:

Noah Timm DB (60 total tackles, 8 INT's - Pre-season 2nd Team All-American)
Luke Menzel WR (44 rec/611 yds/2 TD)
Byron Stanford RB (7GP/38 att/231 yds/1TD - my predicted break-out star)
Anthony Bounds DL (11GP/7 solo, 17 total tackles)
Shane Covington WR/KR (3GP/4 rec/51 yds, 23 punt ret/134 yds, 2 KR/47 yds - transferred to Carthage)

Don't know the reason(s) for them not being on the team - injury, illness or what (except for Covington). Maybe voice or bw could shine some light on the matter.

Timm - Out for the season (injured)
Menzel - Out for the season (injured)
Stanford - Not sure, but I think he took his talents alsewhere
Bounds - No idea

We're VERY deep at the DB position, so we should be alright there.

I was surprised to see the Ryan Givens is only a sophomore (after transfering from ISU). I heard a lot of good things about him coming out of training camp. He's a quick one.

Also look out for Jake Kumerow (6'5") at WR. He's turned some heads in camp as well.

The staff is very pleased with this years freshman class, there's a lot of young talent there.

I don't see how he is a sophomore.  He got a medical RS in 09, but played almost all the games at DB in both 10 and 11.  So, he's played for two years, and also has the RS year already.

Maybe the roster is wrong

Kumerow looks to be a transfer from U of Illinois.  Put Chris Davis in the game at 6'5" also and you should be able to wreak havoc on the average sized defensive backfield!

Besides Kumerow, what other freshman have you heard had a good camp and might be in the mix for playing time? I liked what I saw of RB's Josh Williams, Dennis Moore and Nick Patterson on tape. LB Ricky Valadez out of Chicago, looked like a real head knocker on the tape I saw too. Do you know how the QB's line up after Brekke? Interested to see the freshman Aussie punter, also. Although, it would be nice if he didn't have to punt all too often!! Those guys are known to have very strong legs.

I was surprised to see Chris Davis listed at 275 lbs. He didn't look quite that large to me playing basketball. He must have put on some additional weight in the spring.

The Aussie punter has a cannon for a leg. He has been crushing the ball in training camp. I guess he was big into Rugby (shocking!!) in Australia, but didn't play much American football. From what I hear, he keeps talking about how much he wants to hit someone during the game. I didn't hear much about the QBs (outside of Brekke). Our linebackers will be good for a few years to come. We only have one senior in a deep LB core. Which is very encouraging.

That's about all I can recall.

I love it, a punter with a line backers mentality. I hope he gets his wish!!  ;)

So, let's see if I got this straight - we got a punter into rugby, who likes to hit people and a kicker into fistball, who likes to...I don't know, what do they do again, bw?
