The Eagles have a tough task tomorrow against Northern Michigan.  They've only had a couple days of practice, plus they are traveling there and back on gameday after traveling to Illinois last weekend.  This is what happens when the majority of D3 schools won't schedule a game with you, something that all WIAC schools have dealt with.

Anyone know anything about Northern Michigan?  I know they lost their season opener pretty handily, but I have no idea how to tell how the Eagles stack up against them.

Typically DIII schools don't match up well against DII schools. UWW played a DII school back in 2008 and lost. Like you said, it's not helping their cause by only getting a few days of practice in. I suppose NMU is in the same boat, but at least they don't have to travel.

True about many, but La Crosse has a pretty good track record recently playing UP - beating MO Sciences (DII) twice & South Dakota State (DI) on the road. Weather won't be a factor since NMU plays in a dome. I'll probably be the only one picking the Eagles in the pick'em just because no one else will & I think they have a chance.

Yeah, I figured that it would be tough for the Eagles to compete with the average D2 team but with Northern Michigan struggling their first week I was hoping there was more of a chance ;D

I think UWL would be happy at the very least to see the offense improve and show some potential for the rest of the season.  NCC has a good defense but 206 total yards won't win you many games.  Obviously I hope they win the game, but am more looking for improvements that indicate long term success.

I think the Eagles will benefit from this game.  I do not see them as too overmatched to learn anything.  If the Eagles offense were as good as their defense appears to be, I think it would be a good game.  Although Northern does not have a good defense for the D2 level, LaCrosse's current offensive limitations will likely be exposed against the higher level of competition.  Northern did score a lot of points last year.  This year, they are starting a red-shirt freshman at QB.  They also have Prince Young, a preseason all-American at running back.  They run a spread offense and their lightest offensive lineman weighs 299 pounds.  Although there will be tests on both sides of the ball, I would think the UW-L defense would fare better than their offense.  If they can move the ball some and convert a couple of their drives into points in the first half, they will be able to hang for awhile.  If they can hang long enough, who knows?  If the Eagles turn the ball over or are completely futile on offense, it could get ugly.

The Wildcats will be hungry.  They are currently in a free-fall.  They started last year 3-0 and were ranked in the top 25 nationally.  They then lost 7 of their last 8 games.  Then, last week, they got smoked 45-10 to a team they beat last year.  Double edged sword.  If the Eagles can punch them in the mouth early, maybe the pressure of wanting a win too badly could affect NMU.  But if things go well for the Wildcats early,  they will be eager to finish the job.

The size of NMU's lineman is a good point to bring up.  The Eagles O-line will be fine as they average 276 pounds, but the defense is way overmatched from a size perspective.  Coach Dettwiler seems to have a preference for smaller, quicker d linemen that works well a lot of times at the D3 level.  The Eagles starting d tackles last week were 230 and 245 pounds, and NMU's linemen should not have a tough time run blocking against such smaller guys.

For the Eagles to have a chance, the offense will have to step up.

+k to 413 and a belated Happy Birthday! :)

Now on to the burning question I've been having and the discussion I've wanted to start:

How would you all rank the QBs we've had during this run? I'm not talking about wins and losses or Stagg Bowl wins but on how you feel they stack up on skills.

Mine goes like this:

1. Justin Jacobs
2. Jeff Donovan
3. Matt Blanchard
4. Danny Jones

I'm not ranking Lee Brekke yet, it's not fair until he at least has a full season under his belt.

1. Justin Jacobs, Jeff Donovan, Matt Blanchard, Danny Jones    ;) :D

Each had their own uniquely blended skill set.

Plus I would like to see UWL get the ball out to Bilderback. NCC seemed to shut him down last weekend.

Obviously as a DIII fan I want to see UW-L win. It stunk losing to then in the playoffs in 2006, but it was a lot more fun going home for Christmas and pointing out to my buddy at SDSU that they lost to them as well!

Not sure if they can pull out the win given all the challenges of a short week and 1 day travel. That said, I think they'd be competitive and it'll only serve them later in the year. To me its a no lose. If they get beat, it was to DII school, on the road, on a short week. Not in-region or even DIII for that matter should they end up in the playoff/Pool C hunt. If they keep it close it builds confidence and probably helps them in the Pool C hunt if the rest of the year falls right for them. If they win...big time confidence boost.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how Bilderback does tomorrow.  The announcers during the NCC game made it sound like the weather was a big factor in him not doing too much, and we should see tomorrow how UWL will use him this year.  Last season they seemed to only throw him jump balls in the end zone or bombs down the field.  I think he's talented enough to do more than that and I hope they find a way to use all of his skills.

Bilderback should have more room to run tomorrow. NCC had the nations best corner on him on Saturday.
