For what it's worth:  Falcon coach Matt Walker, in his latest interview, called Oshkosh one of the best, if not THE best team in D3 football.

Whatever it takes to get those Falcons fired up.

I can remember when the stadium was first built and the pines trees on the east side were very short.  We used to sit up on that hill.  The coolest thing though was whenever the WARHAWKS scored the mascot, a WARHAWK mounted on a white horse, would gallop full speed across the top of the bowl with a lance and then stick it in the ground.  It was similar to Florida State's mascot.  Of course that tradition changed when the transition was made to the bird mascot.

WIAC Stadiums (2 of 8): Whitewater

Was the mascot a student? Or some local professional horse rider?

I don't know but I suspect it was some local person who owned a horse.

Yea, that sounds more likely

It was pretty close to both. The horse belonged to a Whitewater family and one of the daughters rode the horse. She was a trained rider.

They are capable of beating Whitewater this year. That's for sure.

They were capable of beating Whitewater last year. That's for sure. Didn't happen.  ;)

You know we had a hiccup in game two and did not have the usual game 1 to game 2 improvement that we are used to seeing as UWW fans.   We saw significant improfvement from game 2 to game 3 and I personally believe that UWSP was equal to or better than Buff State (no slighting Buff State, they outplayed us).  My hope is that we continue to see improvement in timing, execution and play calling week to week.  If that happens, the Oshkosh game will really be one to attend.

OK, time to fire my editor (myself!).  I apologize for the typos in this article.  Hopefully, until they can be corrected on the website,  the errors won't distract too much from the content of the article.  There is one content related casualty from my sloppiness.  The second to last sentence should read:

"The numbers are obviously shaded by the fact that the Pioneers have outscored their three opponents by a combined 108-14 margin in the first half so far this year."

FYI to the Warhark Nation who are heading down to P-ville this Satuday about parking around Pioneer Stadium.

It's not enough that you paid the taxes to build the streets- now you have to pay to use them too.

'02, a little WIAC street cred from Menomonie. I appreciate your efforts on your blog and read it every week. Don't always agree but that's part of the point, right? I can always tell you gave it alot of thought, and you tend to be right on.

Fun stuff to read. Thanks and +k.

Best of luck to ur boys on getting the War on 94 Trophy this weekend.

UWL's inoffensive Eagles need to step up and put some points on the board against the Pointers on Saturday. It is unclear if their failure to click this season is due to the admittedly tough competiton they have faced or whether there are inherent problems with the unit itself. There have been injuries which haven't helped, but that is true with most teams. The "O" has scored only 1 TD per game to this point, and has not yet given the FG unit a shot at the uprights. I'll bet that they show improvement at Goerke Field this weekend. The defense has looked good, and will be tested by the Stevens Point offense. It has been said that this Eagle team could win (or lose) just about any of the WIAC games this year, and I believe this game may be the key to their season. It should be exciting, and I look forward to it.

Nice scout work on the UWP offense Bleed.  UWW defenders will need their track shoes.  I like the athleticsm of our defense to play against this type of scheme- open field tackling is at a premium.  I imagine there will be quite a few bend but not break moments for the D.  UWP and UWO remind me of facing Franklin and Trine in the 2010 playoffs.  Besides sound defense, the UWW offense needs to put together some long drives (scoring preferred).

Thanks Emma, and I agree completely regarding your thoughts on the game.  I think the key to the defensive effort this week will be open field tackling and not giving up the big play.  I have no doubt, there will be an emphasis on the secondary keeping everything in front of them.  Obviously, pressure on Kelly would be important, but he does often get the ball out quickly on many of their routes.  It will be difficult for UW-P to establish much on the ground.  Offensively, a combination of strong ball control and converting some of the down-the-field opportunities that will present themselves would be a good formula, I would think.  As far as the Franklin and Trine comparison, I think UW-P and UW-O does have skilled players that may be similar but I think both WIAC teams boast better defenses and UW-O is quite a bit more physical than the playoff foes from a couple of years ago.  I expect the Hawks to do pretty well this weekend.
