Well, that's about enough fun for one season!  ;)

It would be downright wrong to start anywhere other than to congratulate the Hawks on a REALLY gutsy victory.  It took a lot of character to win on the road and in that environment after falling behind 14-0.  There's a lot to be proud of in this team for the heart they showed.

Every year, Coach Leipold talks about how each year, the current season's group must establish it's own identity.  I think this year's team is still working to establish that.  In spite of the yards passing given up today, the Hawks are an excellent defensive team. I'd imagine Platteville has one of the more capable passing games in the country.  As Lance said in the post-game, they fooled us a couple of times.  I think that is pretty hard to avoid as well as they run their multiple look offense.  As close as this was, I think any team who throws the ball 45 times without a complimentary running game will be in peril of turning the ball over multiple times.  I feel badly for Kelly that he got hurt.  He was obviously playing great until it happened.

Offensively, the Hawks still have a long ways to go.  Hopefully, they will continue to pound the rock every day and get better and better.  Even with improvement and progress, this team will be different than the previous teams.  They have to work to become REALLY, REALLY good at what they are good at and significantly better than they are right now in the areas that are not their strength.

Although it hasn't completely come together, there is still a TON of talent on this team.  We now know there is a ton of heart on this team.  Everywhere they want to go is still ahead of them.  From the UW-W perspective, this felt a lot like survival.  From the WIAC/nation's perspective, sometimes you  live to really regret not killing the giant when you had the chance.

GO HAWKS!

A lot of us were hoping the two students walking around at half with the Chickenhawks sign saying "Not this year! Not this year!" would have come back at the end of the game.  ;)

All they would have needed was a simple UW-Platteville sign, wrote the same thing, and they would have had it right!

Brian Carroll

Two UWSP defenders hit Jared Stan at the 3 yd line, but the UWL RB kept his legs moving and scored the winning TD in an exciting 19-16 UWL victory. The winning score was made with 16 seconds left. 4012 fans watched a good football game on a picture perfect afternoon at Goerke Field. Congrats to the Eagles on a big win.

Excellent recap and perspective.  There were alot of positives today, yes, even on offense.  Platteville's defense was tougher than anticipated.  Our defense showed tons of grit and Kindler was excellent punting and kicking off.

I see the Ausie Gardener averaged 49 yards punting on 5 punts- that's fantastic.  I can't help but wonder if that doesn't help Kindler focus more on field goals?

The freshman Patterson had a nice game.  I didn't get to see most of it- anybody have comments on him?

Tough breaks (literally) for UWP quarterbacks.  Hats off to them for playing so well with their 3rd qb.

He has very good feet.  He is quick to the hole and he runs hard.  He showed a pretty good burst on his 47 yard run.  Pretty impressive start for a freshman to break 100 yards in his first WIAC game.

I like his speed to the hole, vision, and cutting ability......yes I was favorably impressed.  :)

WOW.........this is starting to smell like a lesser team this year.  I for one will be interested in seeing how it shakes out.

There's only one thing to say to them and that's "scoreboard."

Bleed this season is going to require a whole lot of your positive attitude.
To the credit of almost all UWW posters there is rarely a negative post about the prospects of the team.

I will preface this by saying that my support and loyalty for UWW isn't based on wins and losses.  Today I only saw the first quarter and a half or so and then listened to the rest.  IMO this team, by far, has more questions than any of the teams since the run began.  Specifically with the offense, I simply don't see the speed, the playmakers, the scheme or the urgency that is required of a top team.  This offense needed to/had to put this game away late in the fourth quarter with a time consuming drive and couldn't.  In the first quarter, the first four series of the game were three and outs and the first drive of the second ended with a fumble.  Against a team as dynamic as UWP there is no way to find good in how the offense performed in the first five drives.  UWP losing Kelly early in the first half was HUGE.  The fact that UWP went for two instead of play for overtime was huge.

I know that defense is critical to winning championships, but defenses don't win championships alone.

I think there is no doubt this will be the toughest coaching challenge the UWW staff has faced under Coach LL.

Nick Patterson wears No. 32 (Justin Beaver's former number) and at yesterday's game we were talking about the similar running styles of the two tailbacks.

Nick seems to have that "shake" the Beaver possessed. He also appears have great vision and instinct.

Nick is just a freshman but his upside is huge!
