Rod Carey new HC at Northern Illinois.

From 2000-06, Carey served on the coaching staff at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. His offensive units averaged nearly 400 yards per game during his seven seasons and set 14 records, including the all-time conference rushing record. He coached Blue Devils' offensive lineman Ben Knepper, one of the most decorated players ever at UW-Stout, to multiple All-American and all-conference honors. In all, Carey has coached 26 all-conference selections and seven All-Americans during his time at UW-Stout.

They will be in the Orange Bowl against Florida State this year.

Yep. I'm going to the game!

Anyone know the style of Offense Oshkosh operates?

Pain!!!!

:)

Any video to view this pain you two speak of?

Summit I don't know of any video out there but if anyone is going to have it, I bet it will be the Linfield guys.  They have a cool website catdomealumni.com that has some archived games.  Maybe someone will put something up there this week.  I don't know where else to look unless there is video on the Gagliardi finalists- that would have some Nate stuff.

Thanks! yeah - i checked catdomealumni.com - very impressive website - nothing has been posted yet. I checked their actual website - it seems you need a subscription to view the archived games on there too.... Oh, well.

So - maybe you can help - the style offense from what I gathered so far - Pistol/Shotgun 1 RB sets - 3 wide and a H-back - So - almost reminds me of the Bethel team in 2010 UST faced - Very Good RB - Capable WR - Quick- tough d-fense - with pursuit to the ball - except the Oshkosh QB - He seems to be a much better duel threat than anything UST has most likely seen.

Thoughts? - Anything you can add?

Linfield fans asked the same question last week, and I responded with this (I also added a few things):

Their offense is very unique. They run the option read out of every formation possible. Which drives defenses bananas!! When you think of an option team, you think of a run dominated offense that rarelly passes. UWO however manages to remain balanced where the pass is just as dangerous as the run. Their QB, Wara, (as you might know) is a Gagliardi finalist, and is probably the most athletic QB in D3. If it wasn't for his two brothers playing for the Titans in years past, he probably would have walked on at Madison. He has all the tools a QB needs. He runs very well with the ball, and makes all the throws you can ask. In fact, he only threw one interception in the regular season...which is just amazing. Needless to say he was the WIAC player of the Year. His favorite target is Voss, who has size and speed at WR. They run a ton of bubble screens, and once in awhile (when they catch the defense cheating) they will go over the top for a big gain. Their running back, Myra, is really good as well. He finished in the top three in rushing in the WIAC. He is a load to bring down. He had one TD run last week where he dragged one or two linfield defenders five yards for a touchdown.

Their defense is very solid, but during this postseason, their defense hasn't shown up until the second half of these games. If you want to, look back at the box scores of the Bethel and Linfield games. And compare the second half to the first half. Oshkosh seems like a different team. Their defense just shut down Bethel and Linfield in those second halfs....while geting torched in the first half. The coaching staff has made outstanding adjustments at halftime.

That was an incredible game out in Oregon; and I'm very excited that the Toms will be staying at home but am pretty nervous about the matchup.

If I was an odds maker, I'd make UWO a 3 1/2 point favorite on the road, as I think any team who has come through its playoff run is pretty dang good.

I think the key for St. Thomas is going to be getting UWO into a one-dimensional offensive mind set.  I don't think the Titans will be able to run against St. Thomas, as no one (other than Elmhurst on a very weird/off day, generally) really has this year and the Titans are not a dominant ground team.  But if they are able to run, I think it will be game over.  On the UWO side, I also think the key is going to be forcing St. Thomas to throw.

My gut tells me this won't be as big of a shootout as Linfield/UWO was.  I think first to 20 wins.

Thanks! - So added info - Did you see the game on Sat?  What was the difference in how their offense played in the last 1 1/2 quarters compared to the begining 2 1/2 quarters of the game? What seemed to be the difference? Reading the Box score it seems they were able to really turn up the heat?

Well, UW-Eau Claire ran the ball well on UST, but that was the first game of the season.

No really difference in their offense from half to half. They just stick to the game plan and wear down the deffense (which is typical WIAC football). They just keep grinding on that defensive line until it breaks.

tommiegun

I watched most of it and it looked like a bigger, stronger UWO team just started to ground down Linfield and went to the ai.  Of course, it all could have been a little different had Linfiend punched in a touchdown instead of settling for a touchdown inside the 2 yard line.

I don't think UWO will be able to count on grounding down a very physical St. Thomas defense, but we shall see.

The teams (for all their differences) seem to be similar in some regards.  Both UST and UWO are prone to slow starts (hell, even Hamline hung around for almost a half against UST) and great second halfs.  If either comes out flat in this game, this weekend, I don't think the other will allow the comeback, though.

Good point Bench I forgot about UWEC... not confidence inspiring, but that was a long time ago, at least.

While it's true that we do manage to recruit some excellent players from the Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee areas I'm always amazed by those we get from some of the really small Wisconsin high schools.  Three that come to mind right away are Justin Beaver, Jace Rindhal and Adam Brandes.  All three were All Americans and came from high schools with less than 400 students.  Beaver was from Palmyra Eagle HS (336),  Rindhal was from Cambridge HS (270) and Brandes attended Burlington Catholic Central HS (141).  The current roster has starters from small schools such as Wisconsin Dells, Cambridge, Evansville, Horicon, Two Rivers and Necedah.

If UWW had recruited UST's O'Connell would UWW have been going to the Stagg bowl?

O'Connell's bio....'11 graduate of Clear Lake High, where he was class valedictorian; in football was all-state, played in Wisconsin all-star game, was four-year starter, 4X all-conference QB, 4X team MVP; broke state records for career total offense and total touchdowns; helped team win three conference titles; in basketball was all-conference, team MVP and 3X team leader in assists; in track and field was all-conference and state qualifier, and 2X team MVP... son of Penny and Paul O'Connell of Clear Lake.

And in a recent Star Trib story: "Caruso said his staff started following O'Connell during the quarterback's sophomore year at Clear Lake, making the Tommies among the first to take an interest. That helped land O'Connell, although probably not as much as meeting another small-town quarterback, Tracy, on his recruiting trip."

Looking forward to seeing how UST defends against the bubble screens.  This is a secondary that practiced every day last year against one of the most dangerous bubble screens in D3 - Fritz Waldvogel.

Clear Lake is much closer to St. Paul than Whitewater.  It's part of what I call East Minnesota.  Due to its proximity to the Twin Cities, in many ways more part of MN than WI.  When we played at UW-EC there were several EC backers who were mystified that they didn't recruit O'Connell.

Wow, the kid has an impressive resume for sure.  Never would have worked out for UWW though with that valedictorian business.

I don't think UWO will stop trying to run vs. St. Thomas for a couple of reasons.  First, like most good option teams, getting stuffed time and time again simply means the big run play is about to happen.  Second, the option wears down a D-line as guys are often having to chase, this is a benefit to the passing game.

For the record, UWO ran the ball 48 times vs. UWW for a 3 Yd average and 143 yards.  They ran the ball 48 times against Linfield for a 3.7 Yd average and 179 yards.  I know St. Thomas is very good on defense, and I'll even grant you they are as good as UWW and Linfield.  But I won't grant you they are better.  UWO won't stop running the ball unless the clock forces them to.

Retired Old Rat

UST is very deep on defense.  I don't think they will get warn down.  They have good size and athleticism on the d line.
