I'd totally agree with all said about the Tommies O-Line - though I resent (a little) the crack about competition - the MIAC was very strong this year, top to bottom, and that showed in its non-conference slate.  But, and this is obvious, Mt. presents a whole different level of test.  I'm sure they will, by far, be the best defense St. Thomas has gone up against this year.

But, as strengths go, for St. Thomas 1(a) is the defensive front, 1(b) is the offensive front.  I will take those strengths any day of the week, and HOPEFULLY, this Friday.

Wasn't meant as a crack at all, I'd have said the same thing if UWO made the Stagg.  Our conferences prepare our teams very well for tough and talented play, but they don't prepare us that well for the overall speed that you see from Mt.- at all positions.  Unlike many other "fast' teams, Mt mixes in the rest of the important stuff too.
UWW gave the rest of D3 the blueprint.  The question is simple, is St. Thomas' line play at a championship level?

It's a little more complex than that. UWW had elite line play, but they also had back to back elite RB's. UST's Oline may be every bit as good as Whitewater's championship lines, but they do not have a Beaver or Coppage toting the rock. And Mount doesn't have a Kmic either.

You may not have meant it as a crack emma, but it was - at least in some way. I, again, refer to the 2003 run-up. Mt was on a record breaking winning streak, no one gave the Johnnies a chance (well, I think there was one notable exception). I don't think that UMU is that much better than the other elite teams in D III. Maybe 7 times out of 10, Mount wins this one, but I wouldn't put  it at less than those odds.  One must respect the opponent, but don't fear them. By the way, the Johnnies were the first team to beat UMU in the Stagg. Who says the MIAC doesn't provide competition. I think 4 of the MIAC teams were ranked at one point during the season, and it would not have been a shock if three MIAC teams had made the playoffs. Weak sisters? I think not.

Completely off topic, but before the talk on the boards die down, any Whitewater people-can you recommend a good place to eat that is open until at least 10 pm on a Friday night? Thanks.

Given the time frame and day, are you looking to avoid the drunken student bar scene? Or will you be participating in it?

I'm sure MHB thought that had a championship line as well. It contained a preseason First Team All American, and a First Team All Region player. They also have a Third-Team All Region TE. That still wasn't enough. By the time the fourth quarter came around, it seemed like 3-4 UMU players were getting in the backfield each snap. Mount's front 6-7 were unblockable during the later stages of that game. Bailey was running for his life.....

I hate to say this, but Mount wins this one by a couple of scores. The Purple Raiders really impressed me against a VERY good MHB team.

UST fans: it's ok to lose a couple Stagg Bowls before you win one.  ;)

It will be a Friday night and since I will be driving back to Chicago afterward, I will unfortunately not be able to participate. ;D

Now that's a statement I can agree with.

The Black Sheep closes right at 10:00. This is one of the new "fine dining" restaurants in Whitewater.

There's also Randy's. I'm not sure what time they stop serving though. But they have a nice sit down dining hall. They also brew their own craft beer.

Maybe Badgerwarhawk can offer up more suggestions. It might be tough to find somewhere nice to eat that late at night. Unless you consider Culvers  :D

I think it will depend on how much before 10:00 pm you'd be able to get there.  I'm not aware of anywhere that is still serving after ten.  But if you were there say 9:30 ish you might try either Randy's (Milwaukee St) or Cozumel (Mexican on Main St).  Cozumel might serve a little later than Randy's but if you're looking for the classic Friday night fish fry you won't find it at Cozumel.  I'm not sure how late Culvers stays open.  If fried food is your thing that would be a place to stop.

If you're driving to Chicago afterward you'd probably be close enough to Janesville that you might want to check there.  There are a lot of franchise type places (i.e. Applebees, Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Robin, etc.) that are probably still serving at 10 or later.

Since I will be stopping to feed a hungry kid, really, hot and available should do the trick. :D It all depends on the number of teams at the meet as to what time I get to leave, but I am hoping for 9:30ish. How close are these places to the indoor track facility? And thanks for all the suggestions. A few years ago we were able to make it back into Illinois for something, but that place closes at 9 now, so I thought if we picked something up in Whitewater, that might be better.

All of the places in Whitewater are relatively close to the university and the indoor track facility.  Randy's is further than Cozumel and/or Culvers but you're only talking a couple of minutes difference.  Cozumel and Culvers are on Main St. on the west side of town which is a few blocks south of the indoor track facility.  Randy's is on Milwaukee St on the eastside of town.  The Black Sheep is on Whitewater St which is a a couple of blocks south of Main St in the main downtown area.  I can give you specific directions if you would like.

Does anyone know the rules pertaining to medical redshirts, there has been some talk that Platteville's Nick Anderson, QB, John Kelly QB, and Lee Vlasak, RB, will apply for a extra season all have started at some point this season and last season.  I think Anderson has been a starter since he was a freshman but the injury bug has caught him every year.

PS.  to newcardfan if you like pizza try Gus's in downtown WW.

This might be a little off topic here, and something better suited for the off season.... but it's fresh on my mind following the UMU/MHB game over the weekend.

I was just mesmerized on the left of athleticism that Mount Union has. After watching that game, I'm convinced no one is capable of beating them this year. That's not exactly a bold statement considering they're undefeated going into the Stagg Bowl.  :o

With that being said I wrote a few thoughts on the talent gap in D3 football, focusing specifically on Mount Union.

Talet Gap

I wanted to post this on the boards...but it go too long.
