WAKE UP!!

Congrats to the UWW Female B Ballers. However, in reading the article in the Kenosha News, it prompts me to open an old wound, and Beat a dead horse. all at the same time. The first two paragraphs read:

" Carthage Collegs women's basketball coach Tim Bernero really wanted former Central High School standout Abbie Reeves to play for him, and he also said Reeves felt the same way.
But like with many things in life, finances often dictate decisions. The tuition difference between Carthage (a private school) and UW Whitewater (a public, state university) ultimately proved to be too much, especially considering that athletic scholarships aren't awarded at the NCAA Division III level."

Anecdotal, and not dispositive, to be sure, but it does conform to a dismissed theory discussed here before.

It might be more relevant to post this in the women's bball thread.

But since it's brought up..... I guess considering who the writer is, the source might be a little biased (and apparently bitter). Did Reeves admit that's the reason she chose UWW over Cathage in the article? Or is the writer just adding his two cents while giving UWW a little jab? I didn't read the article...so I don't know.

Yes, Reeves did say that in the next para graph. I just assumed that you know me well enough to realize I wouldn't have posted if there was no confirmation. ( ;D)

Actually, since you can't access the article unless you subscribe, I typed in the exact verbage, got tired,  and figured I would wait for that question. Too many people would not have asked, so I give you the Gold Star for posing it. I'm serious about that. Critical thinking is being lost, but you have shown that you know what question to ask when only partial information is given. Don't take anyone's word without question.

Who knows, maybe there were better players in their recruiting class who had already taken up most of the, "athletic academic money," wink-wink

retagent, retagent, retagent,  please, do not make me go looking for that article about the HS player whose coach commented in the Twin cities newspaper acticle a few years ago about how his player chose St. Thomas because, "they are giving him a $40K a year education practically for free!"  I mean, as long as we are cherry picking.  I have a busy day ahead and don't have the time to track that one down.  ::)

I agree with Retagent, 02. Kudos to your critical thinking and asking a good question. The only question that popped into my head was, "Why in the world would ANYONE want to play at Carthage if they have a chance to play at UW-W?"   ;D

Anyone ask Abbie lately how she is feeling about her decision now?

Ha! That was in the back of my mind too. I don't know much about women's bball, but I'm guessing UWW's program is a little better.

Bad news for Paul Plinske, good news for UW-Whitewater:

I really thought they'd tap Paul this time. I'm surprised. Boy, if a guy like Paul can't go from D-III to a D-I bottom feeder, maybe it's simply not possible to make that leap in one step. Maybe D-I's just won't pull that trigger, no matter what.

You can always count on UWM to pick the wrong guy.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

Wow...that's shocking. I really thought he would get it.

He got screwed....how many more NCAA championships does his athletic department need to win?? Plinske has to have about a dozen 8 under his belt at UWW.

As I said, it is only anecdotal evidence, but the fact that St Thomas gives out financial aid is hardly news. When I went to college, I also got financial aid. I owed a grand total of $500 on student loans when I left. That isn't the question. The question is:

Is it easier for poorer students, without good academic records, but with athletic talent, to attend a state school or a private school?

Was this the case for Abbie Reeves (is that why you brought it up)?

UWM passed over Paul Plnske for a second time in a year after naming him as a finalist for the school's athletic director's job. My gut feeling is the committee had reservations AGAIN about Paul not having D1 experience.

Plinkse arrived at UWW nine years ago replacing Shawn Eichorst who left WW to become AD at D1 University of South Carolina.  Barry Alvarez brought Shawn back to Wisconsin four years later to become a UW associate athletic director. After a short stint as Miami's AD, Eichorst is now in his first year as Nebraska's AD replacing legendary Tom Osborne.

Plinske followed Eichorst to UWW and publically voiced his mission statement in his welcome to WW press conference by challenging his coaches to "reach for the stars" and asked coaches to set goals each year of winning conference championship and a National Title.

Now in his ninth year UW-Whitewater has won eight national titles and had six national runner-up finishes under Plinske's watch and he has secured more than $11 million to support facility enhancements to UW-Whitewater athletic facilities.

You are right UWM selection committee, it would have been a huge mistake to select a highly successful candidate without D1 experience!!

A great summary, Voice, of why UWM's selection committee must be completely inept and short-sighted regarding Paul's potential to be highly successful at any collegiate level.  And I want to publically thank them! But no way we can count on the next D-1 program to make such an obvious error.   I wish nothing but the best for Paul and hope he is able to obtain all of his career goals some day but, for selfish reasons, I am thankful we dodge this bullet once again.
