Eerily similar to last year for UWW heading into Buffalo State game. Like last year, Buff State is not a team to take lightly.
Curious as to who the favorite and spread would be.

With two weeks to prepare against a defense that surrenders 34 points per game, I like UWW's chances. Buffalo St. is giving up over 400 passing yards/game thus far! UWW lost to a very different Buffalo St. defense last season. Yes, their offense is very good...but so is UWW's defense.

UWW by 3

For the record, UWW hasn't lost a D3 road game to a non-WIAC opponent in the regular season since 2003 (Mount Union). I think that's the only streak UWW has going for them.  :)

Buffalo State gave up an average of 34.5 points per game last year before playing at UW-Whitewater and held them to on 6 points. I don't think you can use the first two games to compare what UW-Whitewater can do. The offense Buffalo State faced in the first two weeks is totally different than what UW-Whitewater does. I think this game is going to be a good indication on how good both teams are nationally.

Excellent post and unfortunately it is exactly what worries me. Truly the story lines are nearly identical this year to last year. At this point last year, many were discounting Buff State and crediting UWW. It was understandable last year. But this year, until proven otherwise, UWW is in exactly the same position they were one year ago with game one providing no evidence that the offensive struggles have been fixed. The only difference this year is Buff State is 2-0 rather than 1-1.
I agree entirely with your last statement, this game will be a great indication of where the teams are nationally. Although that being said, if Buff State were to win, would voters reward them significantly or marginally in the rankings?

To the UWEC supporters:

Heart attack central.  Another game with mistakes and odd decisions where both teams were in a position to win.

The gov't called.  They want Sweeney's bionic legs back.

Bionic legs  ;D   Sweeney is the team.  Without him, I don't know where EC would be.  I seriously wonder if they will win a game this year.  If you watched the UWRF and UWEC both play the Johnnies,  how would you say they compare?  EC passing 4/17 with 64 yards and -28 rushing yds by the new qb.  Yes, it was raining, but I believe the Johnnies managed to pass around 250 yds in the same conditions.
Odd decisions - yes - don't even get me started on not letting Sweeney take it all the way.  Have no idea if he was tired or if they needed to talk to him, but EC had two timeouts with 1:30 to go on the 15 yard line, if memory serves me right when they pulled him out.  If EC scored, which looked like a given considering the way he was running, the Johnnies have less than a minute to go with EC leading by 4 points.
But enough miscues and weird stuff on both sides.  The pouring rain didn't help either which probably caused some of the turnovers.  Back and forth...back and forth....
EC has a bye week and hopefully the coaches come up with something.  They play another ranked team when they get back.  One bright spot was the EC line seemed to hold on defense.  At least it sounded like it.

I do not believe the story line is nearly the same.  UWW is not coming off 3 consecutive Stagg championships, UWW is not playing to continue a streak of historical significance.   Maybe the teams are posed similiarly, but given the conferences the two teams play in, I believe that argument could be made almost any year.   With that said, it will be a good test for both teams.   I hope UWW has a chip on its shoulder because of what happened last year and that they play with a certain level of urgency I did not see in game #1.   I also hope that the game plan is  a little more assertive and urgent as well.

But I will say Oshkosh has impressed me thus far. They are playing better than I expected. Always good to see a DIII team knock off the defending NAIA champs.

8 returning offensive starters is a recipe for a good returning offense.

I'm most impressed with the defensive play...

Replaced a NT (Smith reportedly bench pressed 500lbs - his brother is still on this years team and is starting NT).

Replaced both DE's...one replacement is Dexter Charles (6'7" 265) and the younger brother of former Badgers WR Darren Charles

Replaced 2 starting interior LB's...one starter who is a Freshman.

Replaced 2 starting corners.

Replaced starting FS.

Impressive.

I find it's hard to look at highlights and get a feel for what a team can do.  For instance, some of the touchdowns look like they come pretty easy, however, we don't know what type of plays were run preceding the touchdowns that probably set the defense up.

I do see Buff State is susceptible to the slant route for a TD at the goal line- plays right into our hands- oh wait, never mind.  >:(

Passing teams are more dangerous to UWW then running teams.  Teams with mobile QB's that can pass are an even bigger fear as it forces the DB's into decisions.
I am entirely on the fence with this one.

UW-Whitewater athletics Website will launch its new look site Tuesday morning at 8:30.  Keeping up with the "Jones"
I like it!   Graphics are way better, has more potential for using various social media.  Hopefully video will be uploaded more than in the past as well.

Yeah me too, I actually don't like it.   Maybe Pat had a reason for making both positives and negatives visible.

You are profoundly consistent!   ;D 8-) ;D  My point in posting it was to show how little defense was being played by either team and why both teams scored 40+ points.    To me that is good news.   The UWW defense will not allow that to happen regardless of mobility and our offense has an opportunity to improve and get some confidence......at least in my opinion.

I'm trying, I'm really trying to be positive.
My logic side has a pit bull grasp on my thoughts though.
Buff St D looked weak last year too. We got 2 field goals agin em. They are better offensively this year.
I get that the highlights don't show a lot of D being played (looked like playground basketball)- but we can't be deceived by looking only at the touchdowns. It's very possible the defenders were playing a bit confused due to offensive scheme. Once they face the bland UWW offense- I don't think we will see video clips of Buff St players out of position.
Ugh, what a miserable week. Like waiting to go to the principal's office.
