May I be the first to suggest for UWW to somehow convince Pacific for a home and away series. I want to see them play.

Speaking of that, since I've been out of the loop for awhile, is there any news on any of UWW's non-conference opponents for next year or in the future?

Props to UW-Oshkosh.....They gave us everything and then some......Gutsy win by the Warhawks today...

Great game in Oshkosh today. You could tell Oshkosh really came to play, as they should have. Their defensive line is as good as advertised. Whitewater had little running lanes, and Behrendt was harassed all game. Speaking of D-lines, I thought Whitewater's line had one of its better performances of the season. They did a great job getting in the backfield (3 sacks). Behrendt really struggled at times, he seemed to have a tough go getting the ball to his receivers. It was a windy game...so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Kumerow is really hitting his stride at WR, 9 more catches for 135 yards. I noticed Huber dressed and took the field for the coin toss, but I don't think he played a snap today. If the Hawks can get both those guys on the field together, they would be a nightmare for DBs.

What can I say about their defense...they are the best. After giving up some big plays in the first half, they made their typical halftime adjustments and shut the door UWO's offense. I counted only one offensive series where UWO had a drive last more than 5 plays in the second half! Just outstanding!! It seemed to me UWO got very conservative with their play calling in the second half. They seemed content with their 4-point lead and quit trying to stretch the field to add to their lead. UWO just banked on their defense holding Whitewater on their end of the field. It worked in the 3rd quarter, then Ratliffe finally broke a long one setting up a TD in the 4th.

This game had the same feel as the UWW/UWO game two years ago in Oshkosh. In both contests UWO held a halftime lead only to get shut down in the 2nd half. Two years ago, in a close game in the 4th, Coppage broke a long run that setup the game-winning score. Fast forward two years, Ratliffe broke a long one that setup his one game-winning score.

Needless to say the game next week is a big one. A pool A bid will be on the line.
02, interesting parallels with 2011. That year turned out pretty well.  ;)

It was a great game for sure. Made the trip back home after the game and promptly watched it again on DVR.  It was much more relaxing the second time!  :)

For whatever reason, one of the things that impressed me was the level of respect these teams showed one another. Both teams were obviously "up" for the big game, but I remember almost no extra curricular activity at all. It was fought hard until the whistle and then the play ended. No jawing, pushing, shoving, or hitting. Unless I missed it, i thought the sportsmanship on the part of each team was outstanding.

Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game.  UW-O is worthy of their ranking and so is UW-W.

I believe  this is the type of win that both demonstrates and builds the character of a team.  Going on the road to beat the defending conference champion who is (accurately) ranked 9th in the country is an impressive victory.   It's easy to forget that the UW-W offense is really young (starting line-up today of 1 freshman, 6 sophomores, and 4 juniors).  This experience will do nothing but help them.

The defense is lights out. I will trust them to be on the field to protect a lead at the end of the game any time!

A lot of reasons to be proud of and happy for the Hawks today. They accomplished a very tough mission against a very good team.

I saw you at the game...Thoughts on Whitewater's attempted 56 yard field goal attempt? Albeit with the wind...

I think the difference in this game came down to the DBs. Offensively the teams were very similar and both have strong front 7s but UWW clearly had the advantage in the defensive backfield. UWO's inability to sustain drives fatigued its D.

Question for any and all: Would your prefer your team to finish 2nd in the WIAC but make the playoffs or tie for the title but miss out on the playoffs?

Sakman 1111

Watched most of the Platteville game......serious lack of defense bodes well for the Warhawks Saturday.....pound the rock guys and the Pioneers....embroiled in state playoffs here in Fibland so can't make it to the Perk and we certainly miss it...

I was surprised. It showed a lot of confidence in both Kindler and the defense.  I have no idea how far out he was making it from before the game, but they must have felt he had a shot.

Finish second and make the playoffs. It'll give the young players a chance to practice longer into the season, making them develop faster.

I'm thinking the same thing (with UWO beating UWP). Looking at their scores, UWP can't stop anyone. 35 points to Stout! They give up WAY too many points, and their offense haven't really faced a good defense all season. They did play Point, and UWSP at times can bring it on defense, but they just about upset UWP.

Don't get me wrong, UWW defense will have its hands full next week. That passing offense is the real deal. Hopefully UWW can slow it up enough, so their own offense can keep up  ;)

And no, there's no way three WIAC teams get into the playoffs....no matter the scenario.

Did you say almost the same thing about the yardage and points Oshkosh gave up to Stout?  ;)  There are just too many variables in using the common opponents comparison to make it reliable.

I agree.  The odds of three WIAC teams getting into the playoffs are worse than those of the proverbial snowball.  The league has had two teams qualify in the past but never three teams.

If the team were selected for the playoffs after finishing second why wouldn't they be selected if they tied for the league championship.  I don't understand the logic.  It isn't the league who decides who gets the pool C bid it's the NCAA and if they were going to award the bid to a second place team they would most likely award it to the same team that tied for the league's championship.  Am I missing something?

I assumed he meant a three-way tie for a conference championship. Since all three teams probably won't make the payoff, someone would be left out out. But yes, I agree with BW if we're talking about just two teams.

For the record, yes I did say the same thing about UWO and UWS  :-X. I'm just trying to put my mind at ease for the next week.

5 Pointer turnovers were the key to UWL's exciting 28-21 win over UWSP on Saturday in La Crosse. The win moves the Eagles to 2-2 in the WIAC, giving them a chance to finish 4th in the Conference. This would mean an improvement in this year's conference record and standing over last year, which would indicate progress for Coach Dettwiler's program. Yesterday's win reminded me of the win at North Central last year in that the turnovers allowed the team to win, despite being outplayed at the line of scrimmage. Point outgained LC by more than 150 yds. This year's offense did take advantage of turnovers to throw 3 TD passes, a feat last year's team may not have been able to accomplish. Give the Pointers credit for coming back and dominating the second half after imploding in the first two quarters. They fell only 2 yds. short of making a 21 point comeback. They are definitely progressing.

Great game to be at yesterday and it sure was similar to 2011.
Almost no penalties, fantastic.
UWO is better than I thought- especially their defense and overall athleticsm.
I felt UWO D out-schemed UWW O for a good part of the game.  UWO prevented MB from getting outside and setting his feet to throw.
Interesting especially in first half that UWW's running success resulted from a fake pass motion followed by a handoff. Straight running plays were going nowhere.
84 offensive plays by UWW- 40 were pass plays.  I love many aspects of the pass, but me thinks 40 is too many.
UWW was very lucky the first drive with two consecutive passes thrown right into coverage that should have been picked off.  MB settled down after that.
Kumerow is special.  I loved how he bounced up after he was injured (I assume his wind was knocked out)- a huge, collective sigh of relief to see that.
Joe Worth was big too, getting several first downs.
It's nice that Dylan Morrang has agreed to be Justin Howard's personal punt fumble recoverer.  I'm still a huge J Howard fan, fumbles or not.
Spoiled= me and most of UWW nation almost assuming the opposition will be shut down by the UWW defense in the second half.  It's flat out amazing how the defense continues to do that, game after game, opponent after opponent.
UWW may have got a little too conservative after the UWO fake punt.  UWW took over with just under 3 minutes left at the UWO 32 and proceeded to run three running plays into the middle of the line.  Fourth down was a completed pass too short- giving UWO the ball again with nearly 2 minutes.  That strategy needs to be revisted.

Overall, UWO was better than I thought.  At the same time, I believe UWW won a game in which they simply did not play at a level they showed previously.  No doubt UWO had a lot to do with that, but some of the mistakes, especially early (bad kickoff, bad punts (multiple), fumbled punt, forcing throws into coverage) are all self-imposed mistakes.   As UWW cleans these things up, they will set themselves up for a nice run.

On the telecast after the game, LL was asked about half-time adjustments. Along with giving credit to Coach Borland for the defensive effort, he basically said that the Hawks hadn't played their best football in the first half and the coaches told the kids to relax and go out and play with the swagger they had shown the last 5 weeks. In the second half, he felt like they did that and went back out and made some plays.
