I would have to agree with you 413.  It wouldn't even be a contest.

It isn't the silliest question that's been asked but it's pretty close ...

Of course it's a silly question, but it's January! If that's not a month for silly questions, I don't know what is!  Besides, I knew I could draw out my good friend 413 with this one! ;)

I don't know if it would be "no contest", but it's certainly possible. I watched the Badgers in the finals (I believe the semi's were the same night as the Stagg Bowl, so I was appropriately celebrating). I am amazed at the digs I saw. That is really a specific skill and takes an instinct that HAS to require playing the game over and over.

The BADGERS volleyball team's win over Texas was really something.  What was also interesting was the similarity to the last time the team made the Final Four.  John Cook had left the program to coach in Nebraska and Pete Waite was a first year coach.  Waite was never able to achieve that again. This time Pete Waite was let go and first year coach Kelly Sheffield led the team to the Final Four.  Hopefully he'll be able to do it again sometime soon.

I never had a clue about volleyball until my daughters starting playing it in high school and later collegiately.  But I've come to really like it.  Players are generally very athletic and the action is fast paced so I find it very entertaining.

Since you follow it pretty closely, I have a question for you. It will sound silly, but I'm serious. Who would win at volleyball, the UW Women's volleyball team or the UW-W football team?

If I may add my two cents...Not only would the UW Volleyball team spank the Whitewater football team in V-ball...I believe the UW-W women's volleyball team would destroy them as well.

Of course you do, you didn't pick UW-W to win a game all year did you?  ;D

When you can jump a foot higher than the opposition, the dig might not always be necessary....

Volleyball isn't a sport where athleticism can translate to automatically to success. The skill requirements are too high.

Put five really athletic guys on a basketball court and they can get by and have some success even with minimal skill. (Heck, that's the entire recruiting plan in some programs.)

But put six athletic guys on a volleyball court with minimal skills and it won't work. They may be able to keep a ball up, but they won't have the requisite passing and setting skills to create an offensive attack following the dig. It would turn into a shooting gallery and they'd be the little yellow ducks.

You might be able to find 5 guys who haven't played volleyball at all, but I really doubt you could find 5 athletic guys who haven't played basketball.   Volleyball just looks poorly designed when played by men.  Imagine if the basketball rim was as low as the volleyball net.

Ha! I bet Linfield's Vball team could beat them.  ;)

I'm right there w you JB.
I'm fortunate to be in the middle of it now as my freshman daughter is in club plus high school vball.
Their skills are beyond what natural athleticism can compete with. Just returning the serve (w a legal hit) by some of these girls would be a far greater challenge than most athletes are prepared for.
In fact one of my most humbling moments came when I decided to play open gym volleyball- filled w certainty that I could serve w power and accuracy, hit (spike in street lingo), pass (bump in street lingo and often requiring a Dig) and set just because I at least used to be an athlete.

After serving numerous balls into the net or out of bounds, passing (bumping) sideways of backwards all too often and finally whiffing on my big Hit opportunities I realized this sport requires serious repetition, timing and team play.
I am biased but IMO women's volleyball is the one sport that I do not notice a physical difference between men and women in athleticism / body movement.
The uw women's volleyball team would Crush any football team including our Hawks.

The UW women's team had a 5'7" outside hitter- highly unusual. She was hitting against women over 6' tall all season and playoffs.

I remember the year the WARHAWKS women's team won a National Championship they played Puget Sound during the tournament.  UPS had an outside hitter that was 5'6" with a 40" vertical.

But let's get back to football.  Want to win on Saturday?

Some female volleyball players can really get up, but she didn't have a 40" vertical.  Giving her a conservative estimate on her reach at maybe 7'3" means she would be able to get 7 inches above the rim on her jump, throwing windmills down with 2 hands.  A quick google search brought up the famed Nebraska women's volleyball record jump at 29".   You haven't watched much intramural college volleyball if you think that the Warhawk football team is so incapable of figuring out the timing needed to play volleyball.

I guess we need to define the competition. Do I think the best athletes on a football team can train for a vball game and be competitive?  Yes.
But I don't think that was the gist of the discussion.
If UWW put its best football player athletes into a vball game w out training they get absolutely destroyed- even against my daughter's team.
They would need a whole lot of intense practice to come even close to the UW women's team.

As I said before I suppose you could find 6 Warhawk football players who had never played volleyball, but that really wasn't the question.  I would bet there are at least 6 Warhawk football players that play intramural volleyball and would be entirely competitive with the women's team and would beat them if they attempted to seriously practice.  This is obvious when you watch Men's volleyball at the olympic or college club levels.

badgerwarhawk

I only know what the UPS media release said about her vertical and after watching her play I didn't have any reason to doubt it.  I assume that it was measured with the two or three step start that you often see outside hitters utilize as opposed to a standing jump.
