Predictions for UWO vs UWW this week?

I don't have a prediction yet,but I will note that if UW-O pulls this one off, it would have to be considered monumental. Their leading passer, rusher, and receiver are all freshmen.  They start a freshman, two sophomores, a junior, and a senior in the offensive line. They do have a better mix of seniors on defense, but still start two sophomores at both linebacker and defensive back.  Some of their younger players do appear to be their best athletes. Now don't get me wrong, that can make for a GREAT future. But it can also make for an inconsistent present.

After being accused of child pornography, then having the accusations dismissed, being dismissed as head football coach and then being reinstated Minnesota-Mankato head coach, Todd Hoffner, has his team ranked #1 in DII.

I hope they win a national championship and some D1 program comes along and offers him a job.

Why do football teams in Minnesota seem to find more problems off the field than on it ???

Since the beginning of 2013, Matt Behrendt has thrown 546 passes with ONE interception.  The production surrounding that one interception?

368 completions (67.9%)
4,133 yards
50 Touchdowns

Oh, then there's that tidy little 19-0 record and National Championship.

How in the world to you throw for over 4,000 yards and 50 TD's with only 1 interception?

That's just sick.

Sorry - just saw this and had to add a stat for ya:

1997 Bill Borchert (Mount Union):
4,335 yds
413 att / 275 completions (66.6%)
2 INT
63 TDs

Looks like Mr. Behrendt is some sweet company.

Wow...Looks like it'll be a great day at the Perk for a late October homecoming:

Mid 60's and sunny. But a little breezy though, which translates to very windy in the parking lot.

One of the stat categories that closely mirrors the current league standings is the turnover margin. WW with 1 turnover, and RF with 17 is a remarkable spread. How much of it is individual talent, how much coaching, how much luck? (RF has lost well over half their fumbles--I call that mostly luck.) After each game, the coach in interviews, says we have to cut down on turnovers, but that has not happened. The players all know it too, but still it happens. In the one win (non-league) RF has had, they had 0 turnovers, or one at most. Turnovers seem like a self-perpetuating problem. I doubt that WW has ever been so close to error free. RF has never been this far from it.

IMO, it all comes from a combination of talent, coaching and a bit of luck. However, a heavy majority of it I think falls on the player's talent. I'm sure the coaching staff of UWRF has addressed this in practice (rather than just talking about it), like doing ball security drills, decision making, etc. But the coaches can't obviously be on the field during the game...the players still have to execute.

Looking at this at a national level, I don't think it's a coincidence that the programs with the most talented players tend not to turn the ball over as much. Unfortunately it looks like UWRF leads the country in that department with 25 turnovers lost. Plus I'm guessing a lot of these turnovers occur later in the game, when UWRF is forced to be one dimensional to play catchup. Once the defense knows you're going to pass, pass, pass....it's easier for them to sit back and anticipate throws. Or for the DLine to play pass rush each down and force fumbles via the sack.

No doubt! Bill Borchert is pretty well known to have been one of the great all time QB's in D-III history. Matt did not even get first team All-Conference QB last year.  That's one of the reasons I like to bring up Matt.  I know people think he is good and UW-W fans are glad he's the QB. I know we've been spoiled at the position, too. But at some point consistency and near perfect decision-making over a mind-numbing time span of passes just HAS to add up to more cred than Behrendt gets.

Nice story there Bleed.  Ahhh, 2012. So many stories there. Btw- UWW did get back in that game.

Anyway, looking back at that year makes me think- It's kind of like losing actually helped the Hawks in the big picture ;D
Here, let me get it started:

What- that's blasphemy Emma - that could be the dumbest of all the dumb things you've said!
I suppose you don't want UWW to throw to Kumerow either?  Second dumbest thing ever.

Thanks for the kind words about the story.

I don't know if dumb is the right word. Definitely, not blasphemous.  Misguided, maybe?   Going into 2012, UW-W won National Championships in 4 of the previous 5 seasons. And you credit the 7-3 season of 2012 for where the Hawks are today?  Still not buying it.     I think we disagree on LL's ability to self-evaluate/staff-evaluate after a winning season. Let's say Behrendt engineered the comeback and the Hawks beat Oshkosh. I think most of us would agree that would have changed the entire season and there is a great possibility they beat Point. That puts UW-W in the playoffs. Brekke previously led the Hawks to a 5-0 playoff record with no previous starts. Let's say Behrendt did the same (except with a few starts). So now the Hawks have won 5 of the previous 6 Stagg Bowls heading into 2013. Still have Behrendt/Kumerow. Still have the 4 stud linebackers. Still have all the components that DID win the championship in 2013. Are you saying UW-W wouldn't have won the championship last year if they won it in 2012? Are you saying they would be in worse position to win it in 2014 if they had won it in 2012? How in the world would we be worse off today if we were entering into this weeks game having won 6 of the previous 7 Stagg Bowls?

Yup...I think UWW's coaching staff is too good/experienced to let 2012's results dictate what happened in 2013 (and beyond). Meaning, I think 2013's success would have happened regardless of what occurred in 2012 (whether it was missing playoffs or getting another Stagg Bowl).
