On a more serious note regarding the UWO game, it concerned me that the execution seemed to significantly change after the Kumerow injury.    Behrendt did not play as well, the O-Line did not play as well and the play calling became way more conservative.  I know having a star/stud player can become a crutch, but this team has too many weapons to loose a mental edge that quickly.  Hopefully that is something that the coaches are working on in practice this week.

On the other hand the ever improving play of the defense has me feeling much better.    After looking at the WIAC stats page, it is apparent that UWW and UWP are 1 or 2 in every major statistical category.   So UWW needs to be firing on all cylinders on Saturday when facing UWP at home.

WHD

I understand those concerns. I'm guessing the coaches will stress that mental/emotional aspect this week.  We need to be a team that punches back hard in every area when a star goes down.  It is important to keep in mind that the execution aspect can be a bit problematic with an in-game injury. With the week to prepare, I am guessing UW-W will be much better prepared if Jake were not to play Saturday.  UW-W will aim to play their best game of the year Saturday.  I'm expecting they will.

Bleed,
I enjoyed your colorful response to my post.  In rebuttal, I offer:

QuoteI'm pretty sure the second half was a 7-7 tie, which does a team trailing 17-0 at halftime very little good
Yes, 7-7 is a tie.  My point, however, is that UWO won the second half in terms of outplaying UWO.  2nd half yardage:  UWW-88.  UWO- 205.  UWO "pounded" UWW in the second half.

QuoteIf you were worried in the second half of that game, I'm concerned about you lasting through what we have in front of us! :D
UWO started their drive with 9 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, they were down 17-0.  UWO drove 50 yards in 5 plays to the UWW 27 yard line.  At that point in the game, IMO an unbiased fan must recognize that the game had entered into the realm of "all it takes now is a couple of breaks and anything can happen".  When a game enters that realm, I don't necessarily worry, but I do recognize the danger of being there.  History of full of examples of lesser teams hanging around and taking advantage of mistakes.

QuoteThey accomplished their second half mission. They kept the final score to being a real football score instead of an arena league blowout.
See above, UWO kicked UWW's butt in the second half.

QuoteAgree. And I would add that unlike Mount or UMHB, UW-W also faced an opponent that for the second year in a row will end up helping them get better. These are the games which I point to and say, "This is why the WIAC can all take some ownership in the success of UWW. Teams come in unafraid and give us their best shot." UW-W is the better for it.

100% agree with this and it's why I have zero problem with saying UWO played UWW so tough.  Thank you UWO.

Big question for UWW at Platteville this week will be the availability of Jake Kumerow and running back Nick Patterson.

Coach Leipold is calling Kumerow a "game time decision" in the wake of last week's "lower leg" injury.

Patterson has averaged 8.6 yards per carry and leads UWW's stable of running backs with 6 touchdowns.  Two years ago in the Hawks 27-26 win at Platteville, Patterson rushed for a game high 106 yards.

Patterson is looking to return to action after being injured in the 1st quarter of the Warhawks 37-0 win at Stout on 10/11.

Anybody making the trip out to PVille for the game?

I may try to work it into the get away weekend I've planned w my wife for her birthday. What better way to say I Love You than finding a UWW v UWP game ticket in the birthday card?

She'll be so surprised.

You're a braver man than me! That, or your wife is like my sister-in-law, and almost a bigger football/sports junkie than I am. Good luck with that  ;)

Thankfully for me she is a real trooper.  I am looking to take geographical advantage of her (no).  Galena, IL is a beautiful location in western IL, especially in the fall, to spend the weekend.  In a strange twist of fate, it happens that UW Platteville is 35 minutes straight north.  I mean, come on- it's not like I made the world.

Congrats to former UWW football Coach Forrest Perkins.  Per a Daily Union news story "he is among 25 divisional coaches who are candidates for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced last week."

I sure would like to see him inducted.

See where Kummerow is #1 on the two deep for Platteville. Does that mean that he will start/play? They wouldn't put him #1 if he wasn't going to start, would they?

Oh no, a coach would never keep an injured guy on the two deeps unless it was an utter certainty he was going to start. It wouldn't be fair to the competition if they didn't know exactly how to game plan  ;) :)

Good Luck to Coach Perkins it ironic that the story came out this week he is a longtime WW coach that graduated from Platteville and is a member of Platteville's Hall of Fame.

I'll be heading to Platteville. Let me know somehow if you guys make the trip! Since you didn't use colors, I didn't reply. Thanks for the clarification. Although we probably agree on more than we disagree, I'd rather focus on the places we don't. :)

I guess if you want to use "kick their butt" in a 7-7 sort of way, that's fine.  They outgained UW-W. That's sort of like the game I play on the freeway. I will pick out a car and say I am going to beat that car to the next exit 6 miles away. I win every time. An "unbiased" observer would probably point out that the other driver didn't know we were racing.  I'm pretty sure UW-W didn't know they were racing the yardage race.  Lead 17-0. The other team gained 68 yards in the first half and showed no inclination or ability to go downfield.  Star receiver out for the game.  Not a bad time to pound the rock and take no undue chances.  Especially when the other team wants to work the clock as much as you do. No hurry up. Only 11 of 27 offensive plays in the fourth quarter for UW-O were passes.  No 2 pt conversion after the TD.   Had UW-W known they needed to win the 2nd half yardage battle, I'm guessing they play it very differently both offensively and defensively.  Not saying UW-O didn't win their fair share of battles on the line of scrimmage in the second half. Also not saying UW-W doesn't need to get better. Of course they do. The good news is they almost always do.

^^
Come on man. UWW went conservative in the Second half, which by its very nature means they went into pound the rock mode. When UWW goes into pound the rock mode you would certainly expect they would out-gain their opponent in the running game. UWW lost the physical battle in the second half.
Of course we agree on most things. Your purple glasses are just a few shades darker than mine.
